Thank you for exploring these abandoned venues and making this video. I'm Greek-American, went to Athens in 2004, and saw the opening ceremony and some games including beach volleyball with my family. I was eight years old, and I vividly remember doing the wave and clicking the lights during the opening ceremony, and sitting in the beach volleyball stadium and getting mad at my uncle for ogling the players, haha. They were beautiful stadiums back then. Seeing these stadiums in such a sorry state 20 years later is saddening, but it's also nice to go back down memory lane and feel like I'm there again. Thank you so much for sharing this video, and letting us relive a moment almost frozen in time.

37:52 Those large open areas at the Olympic complex are used quite often for outdoor concerts and festivals in the summer, and the same goes for the Olympic stadium which hosts some very big and important concerts every year. For example, this year Rammstein and Coldplay played in the main stadium and they were record-breaking shows for Greece, for the Coldplay show there were over 122.000 people there! So many of the large areas are used and when there are large events they are made to look really nice! (That is true only for the necessary areas, not everything)

This is why I've been mostly satisfied with the Paris Olympics. Those venues in front of the famous city locations will come down next month. The swimming pool will go to the local community and the Village is supposed to become housing (we'll see how that goes). By October it will hopefully be as if the Olympics never happened. The biggest takeaways will be some metro line expansions. I hope it's an inspiration for the future host cities that you do not need to build these megastructures that can't be sustained and will eventually be a blight on your locals.
@tylerclayton60813 ай бұрын
For the 2028 Olympics and 2026 World Cup the US already has all the megastructures and stadiums constructed and already in use. We have enough Mega Stadiums around the USA to host every Olympics and every World Cup in multiple different cities. Due to us having so many sports teams and these teams being very profitable, we can constantly construct huge modern stadiums like the $5 Billion Dollar Sofi Stadium. These stadiums have also been very good for the local economy here LA’s last Olympics in 1984 is known as one the most successful and most profitable Olympics of all time. It made cities want to host the Olympics again after disasters like the 1976 Montreal Olympics For the Olympics and World Cup we’re using the most modern stadiums we have. Using the newest Stadiums that have capacities around 70,000 to 90,000. Instead of the older 100,000+ capacity College Football stadiums, since most of these are still undergoing renovations to be modernized

Great video. At 14 years old I went to the Athens Olympics, my dad just suddenly thought lets go so we got a flight from the UK and looked for a hotel with a room and spent 7 days watching at least 3 events a day. Even back then I was amazed at how affordable everything was. Tickets started at around E3.50 and they just sold them out of trailers all over Athens. At place where the stadium was, I saw hockey, handball, basketball, softball and baseball and the whole thing was just such a celebration. It was run superbly and so many people were brought into work there. It's so sad to see the state it's in now but I assume its because it was so far out (like end of the metro line) out from the centre of Athens, I assume there was just no demand for any of it. And then the economic state of Greece straight after I suppose is why this was seen as a luxury. I hope it can be restored.

It's sad to see.... But to be fair, Greece had one of the best opening ceremonies ever. The Games itself was also very well done imo... I think the Olympics should always be held in Greece and the flame should always burn there. And countries from all over the world can perform during the opening ceremony, and rotate... For instance, 1 country from South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, etc. can contribute to the opening ceremony. All countries should pay a fee to Greece for the maintenance of stadiums, and the Olympic committee should do financial and physical inspections / audits..

Half of all the venues were up until recently in Hellinikon, the former airport. All were demolished, because a Metropolitan Park is being built, with actually and surprisingly big progress. I mean, a skyscraper almost 200m tall is being built there, along with 6 others, and already the first floors have been built, so you could say that's a redevelopment. But most of the venues shown in the video are completely abandoned. The Olympic Stadium, the Basketball Arena, the Aquatics Arena and the Taekwondo stadium are still in use thankfully and remain in good shape, but they need regular maintenance. The stadium is being used by a Premier League football club, the white water centre is still being used, the mountain bike forest course is very popular and still being used, the velodrome, swimming pool etc are still going strong I think and the whole area of Stratford has been rejuvenated because it was a right 💩hole before. Most of the Olympic complex in Marousi is still in use to this day. The main stadium is used to host football matches and concerts, the velodrome is used by Greek teams for practice and competitions, the building that you showed at 39:44 is the basketball arena used by many teams, all the swimming pools are functional and used every day. The area surrounding everything is massive and of course cannot be maintained properly, but in general it is kept in a pretty ok state. All the other facilities that were built in the south (beach volleyball courts, baseball courts) and in the east (the Marathon complex that hosted the canoe kayak competition) are abandoned and await to be sold and developed, as it is happening in Ellinikon, the former airport situated in the south of Athens. If you are still in Athens, hit me and we can meet for a proper tour!

That's cool! Thanks for responding! The most bizarre thing I couldn't work out was how to do any activities at the Olympic Sports Center. We wanted to use the pool and access some of the facilities in the area, but there was nobody to speak to and nowhere to pay. We went back maybe 2-3 times and it looks like a ghost town. I imagine a lot of tourists would want to use the facilities, but there is very little information on how to give money to somebody to use the equipment.
@GiannisArash7 ай бұрын
@@s34nTravels Unfortunately in order for someone to use the facilities, they have to be a member of a team or a club. Neither the pools, nor the velodrome or the basketball courts are open to the general public. Some teams have special "memberships" for individuals who want to train by themselves, but the schedule is really specific, because you need to have someone from the club (like a trainer) to watch you all the time that you use the facilities, for safety reasons. So, it is inconvenient for tourists, but for us that live in the general area it's not that bad. The lack of information or people to talk to is usual, again because nobody expects tourists to come and to actually want to use the facilities!

The beach volley stadium and the entire area around it was completely abandoned for many years. Gradually some buildings started being used as municipality offices etc but the stadium remained abandoned. Despite that, the sand remained intact. During the covid period, many people looking for outdoor activities, discovered the place which is great for walking, biking, fishing and some even played beach volleyball in the courts. Later the main court was closed probably for safety reasons. Less than month ago, after the recording of the video, the stadium caught fire and was further damaged. This stadium was beautiful and in an fantastic area by the sea and it always made me wonder why it wasn't repurposed and was simply left to die. The next stadium you show is the taekwondo stadium which is still used today for hosting all kinds of events.

I bet Athens will probably host this event again in 2104 or 2096 (or possible earlier) and not use a single thing it used in 2004. Of course everyone who was alive in 2004 will be long gone or in some care home and it won't matter at all how much money they wasted.

the funniest thing about the tae kwon do building? it's still used, but it's used for everything EXCEPT tae kwon do tournaments... at least that's my knowledge, I'll be glad to hear otherwise
@s34nTravels4 ай бұрын
I'm glad it' still used! It looked kinda abandoned, but I had a theory maybe its used for special events. Is tae kwon do popular in Greece? I wonder if there's a few tae kwon do folks in Athens, and they are mad that they can't use this stadium for it's intended purpose 😆

@@s34nTravels For a period it kinda was. It was probably the most popular martial art for some time. I remember that when I was 9 or 10 years old, my parents had me take classes together with my brother and a lot of other kids were attending as well, there were probably 15, and that was in a rural greek town so I guess it was kinda popular.

Haha. I did the exact same thing as you back in 2016...Took a day to explore and see what I could find. Overall it looked a lot worse back then; the swimming stadium has changed for the better and some of the general areas look better maintained. It was such a good adventure but equally very saddening as I'd watched the 2004 Olympics and couldn't believe how far it had fallen into disrepair. Did you manage to pick up any souvenirs?? I picked up of one of the blue tiles that are used everywhere and took it back to the UK with me. I can send you some of the photos I took if you'd be interested :-)

Athens of all places , the birth place of the Olympics should be on rotation to host frequently. Why didn’t anyone capitalize on that?

No one builds permanent beach volleyball stadiums. Even in rio there is none, and it was built removable stands. What the hell were they were thinking
