When this yacht was launched I was brought in as Captain. It was probably the worst experience of a 36yr career dealing with the shipyard. There had been a build captain who resigned a few weeks before launch which was a huge red flag. As a retired captain I know that it is the officer of the watch to give the orders and confirm that they were carried out. Before encountering foul weather the whole vessel must be secured for it’s protection. It is hard to blame a deckhand for leaving a door open unless it was gross negligence. The captain is also responsible to hire only qualified crew members. I have worked on vessels, for very short periods, where expenses were put before vessel integrity.

Last Sunday, you showed crew quarters in MY Legacy (IIRC) and that yacht had watertight compartments. Would this yacht formerly known as Entourage have such as well, or is that in a class smaller which wouldn't have them? Would the deck where tender is located be considered above water and not have them? Interesting how come images make it obvious there is a tender garage, while in other images the vertical distance between water line and deck above seems too small to have one. If, when running, the wave/wake along ship is higher than door sill and would flood the tender garage, would just stopping ship cause water to drain out? Or would this fllooding be so quick that it is catastrophic and one way trip to sea floor?
@salimerdem75443 ай бұрын
There should be a certain height above the water for such doors, which ofcourse limits the access height drastically for the tender operation. I have seen cases by Italian boats, where this is provided by a movable part and removed for easy operation. Looks like RINA was accepting this solution. A similar incident has happened to a Benetti a couple of years ago, due to a failure with aft door. From the picture of the aft door, seems this might be the case with the side door.

Wouldn't there be an alarm/ alert light in the bridge if significant doors are open? At a minimum, I would expect an alarm if doors are open when the ship is put into gear. In larger aircraft we know when cargo is open, we can acknowledge the alert (on arrival) or ask the ground crew to close or re-close the cargo door, if we are trying to depart. Something similar would be so easy to do in a yacht.

Strange. A hull usually has no doors close to the waterline. The exception is the tender door, which gives access to the tender garage. That garage is usually self-draining plus isolated from the hull. Whatever the use of that door on the starboard side in the forward section is, it surely is also self-draining. It is hard to imagine how that yacht could have taken more water in a rather calm sea than its bilge pumps could handle. BTW the rear tender garage door is not on the "stern starboard side". There is no such thing as a "holiday island". There is no such place as "the bay near Kefalonia". Kefalonia is a rather large Greek island, with numerous bays around it and inhabited year-round by people who are not on holidays.
