This was the best apple crisp recipe on KZbin hands down , and I been on here all day watching them lol
@bobjordan96 жыл бұрын
I made this according to the recipe, except: 1) I added a bit of salt to the topping mix, and 2) added nutmeg to the topping mix. The result was outstanding. Next time I make this, I’ll amp up the cinnamon. This is a real winner.

I’ll do you one more, I add 2 tablespoons of wheat germ for extra richness

This turned out amazing. I made 2 batches, one made this way (Except for the store didn't have grape nuts, so I substituted granola and chopped pecans) and a batch of peach crisp made with the raw fruit/cold butter method. This allowed for empirical testing. The pre-cooking of the apples in the sauce is genius, it makes the consistency perfect. I added too much water, and it didn't matter, it just made it necessary to cook the apples and sauce a bit longer. Chef John never disappoints!

Nice to know that.. coz i was also wondering to use Granola as i couldnt find grape nuts at store

Yeah. Grape Nuts is a non-starter for me. Finely chopped nuts is a good call.

That casserole dish has gotten a LOT of use over the years.😀 Made this today and it is so good. Added a pinch of salt +more spices with a little less sugar. didn't have any Lemon so used a little Apple Cider Vinegar. Might try and soften the grape nuts a little the next time as they are really really crunchy.

Don't have access to grape nuts so I just doubled the oats instead , and it was still delicious and crispy. This was the best recipe I've tried yet for apple crisp. Thank you, Chef John!

Thank you for your excellent channel. I have tried several of your recipes with great success. In my version, I didnt have Grape Nuts but used granola instead. Great crunch! Also added a 1/4 cup of dried cranberries rehydrated in brandy and water 50/50. Also used brandy in place of water when cooking the apples. Fantastic results. Thanks again Chef John.

I had grape nuts a few days ago for the first time and it made me think of this recipe. They were served for breakfast on top of natural greek yoghurt with honey and sliced bananas. I dont know where the restaurant got them from because we're in the UK but it was delicious. I can see why they would be great in an apple crisp.

Hi Chef John! I'm from Portugal so I couldn't find the grape nuts and I didn't wanted to use just the oatmeal so I decided to go for GRANOLA ! I was a little reluctant but surprisingly it came out great :D Also I had never ate granola or any type of recipe similar to this one, but I've got to say that this is my favorite dessert right now!, although caloric but who really cares ? So delicious! Thank you so much :)

Today I made this, for the second time this fall. I doubled the recipe each time, and that works fine. Today i put in fresh cranberries, along with the apples. I did not saute the fruit in the pan with the sauce. 40 minutes of baking for the double batch cooks the fruit just fine. Yum.

I substituted raw sugar in this recipe since I'm both a confirmed foodie and health nut. The only problem I came across while making this recipe was the caramelizing of the raw sugar. After heating the sugar for awhile I became impatient because it wasn't reverting to the sauce like texture shown in the video which ultimately behooved me to learn about the science of sugar caramelization. The problem I finally realized was that I wasn't heating the sugar on a high enough setting to allow it to essentially decay from the hard candy form to its subsequent sauce form. At last, I was able to properly caramelize the sugar and finish the recipe which was I must say Applicious! ;)

Several days of snow coming our way and I thought, oh well, it's time to make apple crisp. You did not warn me to not test the topping, because if you do, one might eat more of it than you should because its sooooo good. Grape Nuts, I'm glad I live in America where we grow grape nuts. I tried to see how much a box of grape nuts cost 10 years ago. I never got my answer but I did see that there was a grape nut shortage back in 2021.

Mmmmmmmmm DOGGY! I *finally* got around to trying out this one - it's been on my short-list forever and ever. I made the whole thing in a 4.5 qt dutch oven - no pan to clean up later. With it with some added blueberries, about 2 Tbls of very finely minced ginger (yes that's a lot) and crushed up sprouted wheat and cornflake cereal (closest I had) instead of grapenuts. KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK! By the way, for recipes like this where we're combining white and brown sugar in the same stage, I love just using white (or raw) sugar and adding a Tbls or two (I usually go a little heavy cuz I love it) of molasses. :D
