Is Slipknot just "scary boy music"? The answer surprised me. Join me- a professional opera singer as I listen to Slipknot for the first time performing "Snuff".

well Snuff realy isn't a Slipknot song it is a Corey Taylor song
@JMulvy
@JMulvy 5 ай бұрын
The song is about an unrequited love, it is full of regret because he believes he drove her away by confessing his love to her. The video is about his obsession with her and inability to let her go after they split. If he becomes her, he never has to let her go. The story goes that Paul heard Corey working on the song by himself and he was really self-conscious about it but Paul convinced him to keep working on it. Then one day when Corey was particularly down Paul (bass), Jim (lead guitar) and Joey(drums) surprised him with some preliminary instrumentals to go along with it and it became a collaborative effort that the band had not experienced before. I will save the rest of the story for when you react to the Live acoustic version that the comments will no doubt beg you to react to. By the way... there are NINE members in Slipknot at this time and Snuff is their most popular of the slower, emotional songs but you are right. It is not their typical sound. This video was directed by Shawn (lead percussion) featuring cameos from Malcolm McDowell and Ashley Laurence.

I thought this song was because his friend killed his self
@JMulvy
@JMulvy 2 ай бұрын
@@ksensapp7702 the friend you are talking about was Paul Gray (Pig mask, Bassist) and he didn't commit suicide he OD'd. Snuff was the last song that both he and Joey Jordison (Kabuki mask, drums, died of a genetic disease) worked on. They were both alive when it got released, but since their death (especially Paul's) this song has been rededicated to their memory. When it was released it was about a friend who he confessed his love to but she did not love him back and it not only destroyed what hopes he had for a relationship but it ended their friendship too.

The song is about his divorce. The reason he has so much pain in his voice is because his friend died of an overdose while they were recording it
@JMulvy
@JMulvy Ай бұрын
@@test-547 Not quite. Both Paul Gray and Joey Jordison were alive when the album All Hope is Gone was released in Sept 2009. It was the last song the three of them worked on together. Paul died May 2010 and Joey in July 2021. The song was rededicated to Paul after. The woman in question Corey was never actually married to. He was going through a divorce at the time but the 'friend' who helped him get through it was just being a good friend. He thought it was something more than that but he was wrong and when he told her she disconnected from him entirely. The pain of this song was originally from an unrequited love.

One of the great things about metal music is that sometimes the heaviest metal song isn’t the heaviest song musically. One of the things that drew me to metal music in my youth, when I was first struggling with my own demons and mental health issues, was how it can explore these deeply emotional and difficult subjects in such an open and direct manner. One thing people who aren’t metal fans, or understand the genre, don’t get is that metal music is just as capable of making the listener cry as any other type of music. Slipknot is an amazingly talented group of musicians and Corey Taylor’s vocal ability is truly tremendous.

There definitely is scary boy imagery in Slipknots usual presentation and most of their music is much harder but, for the most part, their music deals with real issues (mental health, social injustices, feelings of isolation, protesting against mediocrity etc…). It looks like no one has taken a stab at unpacking the video without cheating and searching the internet to see if Corey or the band did a behind the scenes or explicitly answered it. It follows a man tortured by the promise he once made to never forget or let go of someone who has died. We can presume he went through the 'normal' stages of grief at home, and in the opening shots, he's smoking a cigarette to calm his nerves before he escalates his coping attempts to dressing up as his lost lover in an attempt to recreate...something. Perhaps a night from years past. The video tells a bit of a different story than the song and lyrics in my opinion, as those non-musical elements aren't present on either the album (album version is over 1 minute shorter) or when Corey does it live acoustic. There are two more angles to approach the video from - one is from a kink angle from the shoe sniffing to self harm to cross dressing. A second would be the concept of a 'snuff' film and how this would fit into that genre... perhaps the video tape he keeps replaying may be so torturing to the main character that an otherwise innocent 'home video' has become as horrifying and painful as a snuff film following his loss. That's all too much to unpack for a YT comment section though. Hope you do more reactions, I love how much musical knowledge and attention to detail you brought to this song!

Great synopsis. Another possible interpretation is that she is living but has left him; but either way, he can't cope with the loss and has taken to becoming her in order to try to fill the void. A third possible interpretation is that she never existed; she was a figment of his imagination that became so real his mind splintered and he started having multiple personalities, and he keeps reliving the loss over and over as in the "real" personality he keeps finding the clues his alter-ego left, such as the lipstick on the glass or the shoe. One of the reasons I love the video is that it invites such speculation and discussion. There's no real "clear" answer.

The distance between a song like Snuff and a song like Diluded isn’t far off. You simply have to be willing to listen to what he is saying, the hurt he’s conveying, and how it’s impacted him. If you go into a song labeling it as “scary boy music”, you’ll never truly listen to it. Music doesn’t have to align to your personal tempo to convey a message or be considered powerful.

Snuff is the absolute exception Song from Slipknot. But almost every Slipknot fan love the song because it's just a genius track with so deep lyrics and emotions.

One of the great Slipknot songs. So melodic and the pain is real in it. If you want ot hear real "scary boy music" from Slipknot, try 'Surfacing", if someone hasn't already suggested it.

Snuff became something very different than was initially intended. Where as I realise you are being very technical and looking for the formula that makes the song I recommend that you have a look at Corey singing this live and acoustic. The evolved meaning where it became a song for Paul adds a lot of genuine pain and soul into not only Corey’s vocals but the response from the crowd, a lot of people saw Corey break when trying to sing this and it’s now become a song where the crowd sings for Paul I heartily recommend looking up the Corey live in London version it’s heartbreaking and uplifting all in one stripped down hammer blow directly to the soul

Judy Garlands "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is a great song if you want to feel some emotions. There is one version that was filmed right after she attempted self-deletion (only told people later) and I don't know how describe the depth of emotion she puts in to the performance. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Yes, this song means a lot to Corey, and he really put his whole heart and soul into it. Christina, I would also advise you to listen to "Vermilion Part 2" by Slipknot, it's not a scary boy song) .

Your preconceived notions of what you remember Slipknot as from when you were younger "scary boy band" are not really wrong, but Slipknot has evolved their sound a lot throughout the years as they've grown up. It was really cool to watch someone as skillful as you are at breaking down all the different elements to the song. Thank you! They have made a lot of really cool sounding music, now that you have gotten your feet wet I would recommend Wait and Bleed, which I think is just an amazing song. As many others have pointed out Corey Taylor is an amazing performer and especially the acoustic version of this song is very powerful.

Your initial perception of the band probably isn't that far off if you were to pick 95% of their other songs, other than Corey has a hell of a singing voice when he chooses to use it. The fact that ability is there might've surprised you, but pick a song like Disasterpiece and you'll say, "ohhhh, yeah, that's pretty much exactly what I expected."

The amazing thing about slipknot is they are diverse, they can pull off a song like this very well although typically this isn't their core sound. Corey wrote this song about a girl who helped him through a real hard time. He fell in love with her but she didn't feel the same way back and it broke him. The bassist at the time Paul Gray who unfortunately passed away young due to an overdose pushed Corey to release it. Originally he wasn't going to but Paul pushed him to, Now this song is more of a tribute to him so Corey finds it very hard to perform this live. Once you go down the slipknot rabbit hole you will be hooked. It's a deep rabbit hole, so get comfortable and enjoy your stay 😊

Some context for Slipknot's Discography: 1. Their self titled album that came first has what a lot of fans to consider some of best songs they've written. Probably their 2nd best album. 2. Their Iowa album is considered their heaviest, darkest, and "scariest" album. This is what many consider to be core, pure, and unadulterated SLIPKNOT. Widely regarded as their best album by longtime fans. 3. Volume 3 subliminal verses album is when corey changes up his vocals a bit (many think for the worse) and gets clean from alcohol. The band at this point has gained much more widespread popularity. 4. All hope is gone album is when corey really starts to work on improving his lyrics and again changes his vocals a bit. This is also the last album with all original members. 5. The gray chapter. Their bassist Paul Gray passed away a few years before this album and the band almost separated because of it. This album is dedicated to him. The band also dropped their drummer Joey Jordison due to medical reasons. With this they gained a new bassist and drummer Alessandro Venturella and Jay Weinberg. 6. We are not your kind saw another member leave. He was a percussionist (Chris Fehn). He was replaced by Michael Pfaff. 7. The End so far... this album saw craig jones their media/samples member record and play a few shows before leaving the group. Additionally, their drummer Jay Weinberg also played on this album and a few shows, before he found out he was suddenly no longer in the band. Recommended listening 1. Purity 2. Disasterpiece 3. (SIC) 4. Surfacing 5. Dead Memories 6. Nero Forte 7. Wait and Bleed 8. Duality 9. Eyeless 10. Vermillion part 1 and Vermillion part 2 (they both should count as one song).
