Twin Peaks is my favorite show and I love the movie! I'm so glad Criterion released it, even though I already have the Twin Peaks box set, which includes Fire Walk With Me and The Missing Pieces. My favorite film is on Criterion; that's actually how I discovered it. It's Purple Noon (1960). I was so engaged in what was happening. While I was watching it for the first time I actually thought to myself, "This is my new favorite movie!" And it's been my favorite for more than 5 years, now.

Hi Daisuke - hope you're well. My favourite films of all time are, regrettably, relatively predictable and populist fare (e.g. 'Memento', 'Se7en', Léon', 'Heat', 'The Big Lebowski' etc) but some of my favourite Criterion movies include 'The Lure', 'House', 'Tampopo', 'Ratcatcher', 'Revanche' and 'Certain Women'. However, I love hearing about the restoration work and preparation that goes into their collection, and it's these things - from the bonus materials, the restorative effort that's been undertaken and even the packaging and artwork - that really elevate these films (even some films I wouldn't otherwise be *that* keen on). So, some of my favourite releases from Criterion - taking all of those previously mentioned things into account - are 'Mishima', '12 Angry Men', The Three Colours Trilogy, The Apu Trilogy, The Guillermo del Toro Trilogy, 'Fantastic Mr. Fox', 'Salò' and 'Dressed To Kill'. (I think that might be the first time 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' and 'Salò' have been put side by side...) Although, the recent remastering and release of ' Night of the Living Dead' is just superb; fleshing out an already well-known film and breathing some new life into the undead! I've got copies of Edward Yang's films which I haven't watched yet but, after hearing your support for 'A Brighter Summer's Day', I'll make sure I remedy that soon. I love that shot when he meets Joe Pesci in the desert, and the car driving through the sand is reflected in De Niro's lenses! So, I love glasses. I have a number of pairs actually, but the ones I am wearing in this video are my favorites. I affectionately call these glasses my "George Romeros".

After I watched Twin Peaks FWWM in the theatre in the 90s there was this guy that was really mad that he was dragged to see the movie. He started kicking the garbage can over and over saying how much he hated the movie. The movie affected him deeply but he didn't really understand it. He was kind of behaving like a Lynch character but didn't realize it.

I love when folks have such a revelation when it comes to certain films for them and talk so passionately like you have. Mine was and will always be Amarcord. It was such a weird, captivating, hilarious, and sad depiction of childhood. I had never seen anything so free in its storytelling. It had no worries of a linear narrative, just a piece of a giant puzzle that was Fellini’s life. Nino Rota’s choice of the films theme is beautiful. The scene when all the young boys are “air” playing to the theme in an fog outside, the sexy Magali Noel, the warmth and comfort of Italian architecture. Amarcord will always have a place in my heart and is the first criterion I show to newcomers.

Monsieur Hulot: All of Fellini films were revelations for me. No one could possibly travel the Fellini terrain, but Fellini himself. I consider "La Dolce Vita" to be the greatest movie ever made. I agree that "Amarcord" is an unforgettable return to childhood. The highly underrated "La Strada" and even "Nights of Cabiria" are two of my favorite films. Of course, I am Italian and have the inside track.

Off the top of my head, my list includes (not limited to Criterion): A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Chungking Express, Memories of Murder, Fargo, Requiem for a Dream, Unforgiven, Network (1976), Cleo from 5 to 7, Stalker (1979), Cinema Paradiso, Wings of Desire, The Conformist, Bitter Rice, Mulholland Dr., The Wild Pear Tree, Winter Sleep, Spirit of the Beehive, and Das Boot.

Daisuke Beppu Well, meeting with passionate lovers of Cinema all over is what gives me lot of happiness. I’m from India. And I did watch a LOT of movies from a very young age. But, they didn’t enchant me and pushed me thinking how great cinematic art form is. But, watching the cinema now I watch makes me wonder what world would have been without this great art. And this journey...... I can’t exactly say when it began(like you can’t say how a dream started). But, I don’t know how..... I have just flown here in these 2 years(I started it on 16 and now I’m 18). I remember how I was before this. Unable grab my introspective personality and couldn’t know the feeling of existence. I gradually not transformed, but dig out my self. And now I mostly talk in these philosophical and cheesy terms😅. I can’t do it the other way. However if there is an order of films(not favourites but can tell I my tastes evolved) which can represent my progression, that would be: Avengers, Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, Raging Bull, and now I’m actually loving everything I watch, because all of them were so great. And now I’m with these favourites(I don’t actually believe in having favourites, but it is fun): Weckmeister Harmonies, Mulholland Dr., Her(yeah, this one is very close to me)on my top tier. There you go. I am very happy to share this with you. Do you use Mubi, btw?

First, I am very struck by this comment, and in particular your words "But, watching the cinema now I watch makes me wonder what world would have been without this great art. " This is something that I feel in my own journey as well, because I oftentimes watch films that I used to watch a lot as a kid. Except that now, they have a different and new effect on me now that I am older. And you mention films like Her, and Werckmeister Harmonies, which are brilliant. And you mention also MULHOLLAND DR. (and I also noticed how you spelled it as "Dr."; very nice). There is a line in that film that is one of my absolute favorites in cinema, where Betty says to Rita, "Don't drink all the Coke." As for your last question, at the moment I don't have a subscription to Mubi. I don't watch that many films on streaming online, but I think it is an excellent service.

Thanks Daisuke, what a great list. I need to see Bad Timing and Life is Sweet, but I have all the others, and feel you made some excellent choices. I saw Brighter Summer Day on Film Struck and it immediately went on my wishlist. I'm excited for the Criterion Channel, because like FS, it can help me determine what films I actually want in my CC library. Nowhere near your definitive one, but I think I have about 150 or so now. It will continue growing, I'm sure. My top 10 CC would include Night of the Hunter, The Red Shoes, Rossellini's War Trilogy, Ace in the Hole, Seven Samurai, All That Jazz, 8&1/2, The Tati Collection, Dr. Strangelove, and Modern Times. My first reaction to 8&1/2 was similar to yours, and changed in the same way. Thanks for sharing this. Your passion for these films is much appreciated by me, and I'm sure, many others.

I only watched this film this year (iv seen the original series ), and couldnt believe how terrifying some of it was ,the tone of the film was so much darker than the series but still fit perfectly. An absolute masterful film across the board.

With you having such a diverse appreciation for cinema, I find this to be a very intriguing Top 10. Short Cuts is a movie I have not seen but have many times nearly blind bought. I think this being in your top 10 has inspired me to do so during my next round of Criterion blur-ray purchases. I just watched the trailer for Bad Timing, and I gotta say it looks fantastic. Garfunkel's first line in the trailer ("To What?") is so spot-on it already sets the hook, and then there is the diverse settings and eccentric performance Theresa Russell - hoping to see that get a blu-ray release.

Totally agree with you on Fire Walk With Me. I have probably pondered that film more than any other. I saw it in the theater upon it's first run and it confused the heck out of me but lingered in the mind enough to revisit it again and again. It's like a strange magical seed that gets implanted in the soul and never leaves.

Fantastic video. I love the way you can be so extemporaneous yet articulate in your feelings about these films. I wish I were only half as good! You make me want to reevaluate my decision not to add FIRE WALK WITH ME and BAD TIMING to my library of Criterions. Although I've seen both, neither impressed me enough to watch again. Well, I actually saw FWWM in the theater upon its initial release, and 25 years later when it was shown on FilmStruck. But I agree that Sheryl Lee's performance is extraordinary. I might need to add this to my Criterion Wish List! Thank you for taking the time and effort to enlighten us.

All the same, your kind comments are really inspiring. Thank you so much! As for your comments about FWWM and BAD TIMING! I am so happy that you are thinking about reevaluating these films! I think that FWWM is one that is already being reevaluated favorably thanks in large part to the new Twin Peaks series that broadcast last year. But I always thought that it was Lynch's gem. As for BAD TIMING, this is one of those films that just packs an emotional wallop. Some of the interplay between the characters and the psychological warfare that occurs is just devastating. And yet it is told so brilliantly and with such bravura by NIcholas Roeg that I cannot look away. I would LOVE to hear your reactions to those films if you do rewatch them. Please let us know! I love the juxtaposition of his life with his literature. I’m still processing it but thought it was excellent and will revisit many times, thanks so much for recommending it. Daisuke, Wow! Your passion is overwhelming! I loved your comments about your passionate favorites. I loved your comments on 8 1/2. Being Italian, I have an inside track to Italian filmmaking. Fellini really knew how to depict a universe of Italian people and the Italian way of life. If you grew to love 8 1/2, how about looking at La Dolce Vita. This is my favorite all-time movie. I regularly return to this movie because I know that I will relive the kind of subtle excitement that Fellini instills in his character development. Why Fellini is so authentic and breathtaking is a mystery to me. I started with La Strada and it blew me away. Then along comes Nights of Cabiria and again I cried and cried. Roma is another mysterious Fellini film that grabs you and puts you into a dreamworld of ancient history and modern Italy. Give Fellini another look and keep your passionate and quite literate appreciations of the best in films.

Great work on the video... I can tell you put a lot of time, thought and effort into it. The intro and ending were pretty cool. Overall I'd say this is probably the best thing you've produced so far so keep up the good work! Brief comments on the films you mentioned: Life is Sweet - Haven't seen this one yet but I'd like to see more stuff by Mike Leigh so I'll give it a shot as soon as I get a chance. Short Cuts - it's been a while since I saw this but I've kept the Criterion DVD all this time because of the book. It may be time to revisit it soon. Twin Peaks - I saw the original series but never really got into it. Lynch is really hit or miss for me and some of his stuff is just too bizarre for my taste. The only one I really LOVED was The Elephant Man. Dekalog - Fantastic series. Still making my way through it but I think Kieslowski was an absolute genius. Do you also have the Arrow release of this series? Have you compared it to the Criterion? Bad Timing - recently watched this on the Criterion DVD - wish it were on Blu-ray. Very interesting work and I agree with you about Theresa Russell! Rebecca - One of my favorite Hitchcock films. What do you think of that other great Daphne du Maurier adaptation, Don't Look Now (another Criterion release)? 8 1/2 - This was a tough watch when I was a kid. I think I'll have to give it another chance based on your recommendation. Mishima - In total agreement with you on this one as you may already know. Picnic at Hanging Rock - Another amazing film and blu-ray release from Criterion. Love it. ABSD - This is still sitting on my shelf waiting for the right time to be watched. But I can't wait. I'm a HUGE Nic Roeg fan, he's actually my favourite filmmaker & Bad Timing is incredible, probably only 2nd to Don't Look Now in Roeg's filmography but since Don't Look Now is probably my joint favourite movie of all-time alongside Blade Runner then that's not doing it a disservice. Criterion's Dracula by Tod Browning is incredible because it has Philip Glass' score as an option. The movie becomes a masterpiece with that score! The camera movements make more sense. Do not miss this chance to see the movie with the soundtrack created specifically for the movie. I would love to see Frankenstein with a soundtrack as well. Scarface 1932 should get one too. Some of these old movies are so much better than people realize.

i dont know if you still read comments after so many years now but i just had to comment on this. i was really intrigued by your thoughts and connections with 'a brighter summer day', even so since i find that film one of my all time favorites as well. there's this feeling i get when i really think about the film, it makes me want express so many thoughts all at once, almost overwhelmingly and i don't know if its because i connected with the film so well or if the feeling arises just becase the movie is so great, a masterpiece even. but then again, there are so many great films, so many masterpieces in this world which i have seen, and some do move me greatly, but not even close to this one. i dont know what im trying to say here i really dont have a way with words, i was just really happy to find someone who appreciates this film and who is moved by this film like i have. thank you for your take on this. also, i dont know if i saw this in the video but the movie 'rebecca' is actually based on a novel by 'daphne du maurier'. do read it if you haven't already, its my favorite gothic novel and just a beautiful book. i haven't watched the film yet and was reminded again to after watching this so thank you for that again. hope you're doing great, cheers!

Hello Daisuke, I was surprised to Altman's Short Cuts on here. I would really love it if you could do a video on Short Cuts or Altman in general. I recently watched that film, and it did not fully grip me in the way that I expected. I thought Altman did a masterful job at weaving the narratives together. It also serves as an interesting snapshot in the careers of many already big stars, and also who would later become much bigger stars (Julianne Moore, Robert Downey Jr, and Frances McDormand to a lesser extent). However, it feels very natural to compare it to the material which inspired it, and in that case it feels like no comparison to me. I don't know how familiar you are with the works of Raymond Carver, but every moment and emotion that Altman evokes in Short Cuts feels like it's done better by Carver. The emotional arc that is presented by Carver in his collection of short stories, which both concludes and reaches an apex with his title and final short story, Cathedral, feels much more fulfilling than the one presented by Altman. I'm not sure if I'm missing something, and maybe it just needs a few more rewatches to truly hit right, but I would definitely love to hear some of your extended thoughts on this movie! "Gosford Park" is one of my favorite movies, everytime I see it I get something more from it. Altman was really a master in knowing how to treat and get great performances from his actors. In the "making of" the movie you can easily see how a master knows his art... I would really appreciate your opinion in a few words for that movie, if of course you have seen it.

I saw Gosford Park in the theater when it was released. I enjoyed it very much for its period detail and the “upstairs/downstairs” depictions as well as the murder mystery element and the Altmanesque depiction of character ensemble. An excellent work.

I’ve seen 8 1/2 and Mishima. Loved them both (both of them I gave 10/10) but I watched them online. So I may purchase the Mishima Criterion because it looks great!

Thank you so much. I used to have the VHS of the film MISHIMA (in the soft red "clamshell" case), and it was really great. But the Criterion release is excellent as it is a slightly extended version of the film, as well as being an excellent presentation.

Some of my favorite Criterion films would have to include Yi Yi, Ikiru, Fanny and Alexander (although I prefer the longer television version), La Haine, In the Mood for Love, The 400 Blows, Kuroneko, Floating Weeds, M, Cléo from 5 to 7, and Fellini's Satyricon, although I could go on and on. With all that being said, I'm still so new to film outside the US and Criterion collecting as I'm only 22 and only started watching foreign films and collecting a year and a half ago. It's incredibly inspiring to see someone who has been an avid film collector and fan for many years; I look forward to the day where I have a collection half your size! :)

@@DaisukeBeppu I went in blind on a lot of them but I've been working my way through. I had never seen Punch-Drunk Love but when I did it instantly broke my top 5. Since this comment I've gotten La Haine, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Rushmore, Grand Budapest Hotel, Inside Llewyn Davis, Blood Simple, and Mirror (La Haine and Y Tu Mama Tambien being my favorite out of the new selections). I've become addicted. A lot of my favorite directors detail going to the movie theatre and watching movies like 8 1/2 and Bicycle Thieves. I feel like in a lot of ways criterion is providing the same curation of great movies for a new generation of filmmakers. Criterion is especially helpful to me because I don't have any arthouse movie theatres in my town.

Watched Rebecca last night. Wow, great film as I expected since it was Hitchcock and on your top 10 :D The 2008 documentary on disc 1 of the Bluray was also very interesting. Hitchcock wanted to buy the rights to the Rebecca, but couldn't afford to outbid David Selznick, who had just produced Gone With The Wind. Selznick didn't like Hitchcock's drafts for the screenplay so Hitchcock only directed and received no writing credit. When Selznick would come on set there were mysterious problems where the cameras would stop filming as Hitchcock didn't want Selznick watching over his shoulder trying to control things :D Also an interesting bit of trivia I just noticed from IMDB is that Joan Fontaine was born in Tokyo

I watched dekalog for the first time about a week ago. My expectations were really high: Ebert called it a masterpiece, Kubrick regarded as one of the best movies ever, and three colors were amazing. After an elevator scene in Dekalog 4, I realized that it surpassed my expectations, but I was only 4/10 in. This might be the best thing I've ever watched.

Thought I should mention that if you need a criterion edition of a film and you can't wait for the barnes and noble 50% sale, might I suggest checking out Amazon, while I can't say this for sure, many of the releases I've been interested in are usually less than 3 dollars more than buying them during the sale (or at least that is currently the case as of the publication date of this comment) , buy I'd recommend double checking the films you intend to buy yourself just to make sure this applies to you

Mishima: a life in four chapters is one of my all time favs and the criterion collection blu ray looks amazing especially the artwork on the cover, ive known about criterion for a while but never bought any i think mishima may be my first purchase.

Hello Kirtage k, and thank you so much for your comment. It is one of my all time favorites, and yes, if you are into the film, then I would strongly recommend the Criterion release. It is amazing, and indeed, there were certain "changes" made to the color of certain scenes (which is described by Paul Schrader in the excellent commentary), but these changes are not in my view in any way intrusive or distracting from the overall effect.

Most criterion collections im interested in are the akira Kurosawa films great director. Mifune the actor Akira uses a lot in his movies is an inspiration for me. I know he wasnt a perfect person and had his problems Mifune, however everyone has their own problems. Great Actor combined with a wonderful Director gives me plenty of reason to blind buy most the movies. (I have seen RAN and Seven Samurai)

A very interesting idea! Yes, I would love to do that. I am not at all an expert, but I have done some studies into his works in school, but again nothing at all detailed or extensive. More importantly, I really find his works to be so engaging. The Dekalog in particular. And I love the Trois Couleurs. I remember I was so proud as a student to have been able to reenact Julie Delpy's silent mime act in White. As for a series, yes, I would love to do one one day. However, if you are in need of something that is immediately available, and if you don't already know about it, I have a couple of really great friends who are doing a podcast and right now they are going through all the works of Kieslowski! I received my first Criteron ever for Christmas this year, and it was "Fire Walk With Me" . Already seen it and it's truly great (why it was booed at Cannes is beyond me) and I look forward the bonus features and especially "The Missing Pieces". Would be very interested to hear your favorite (and least favorite) Lynch movies. BTW, absolutely astonishing collection. "A Brighter Summer Day" is on my watchlist since a rather long time and seeing it as your #1 really makes me want to watch it fast. Thanks for all the nice videos. Hello! Thank you so much for your kind comment! So, let me address your question first. Regarding Ingmar Bergman, while I am not a Bergman expert, I have seen my fair share of his films. And his career is very wide-reaching and varying in terms of scope and themes, though there are undeniable links that exist throughout his entire filmography. Now, yes, I admit too that sometimes his films might seem "boring" at first, but depending on one's mood when one watches the films, they can turn into incredibly profound viewing experiences. I think I would recommend starting with any of these: WILD STRAWBERRIES; THE SEVENTH SEAL; THE VIRGIN SPRING; FANNY AND ALEXANDER. PERSONA is a great film, but it is a definite challenge of a viewing experience in many respects, and so I might not necessarily recommend it as an entry point for Bergman, but, rather, as a film that one can watch after one has seen a Bergman film or two. And then, if you are interested in watching more Bergman, then you have a whole treasure chest of films to choose from! Anyway, I hope that helps. As for your comment about Lynch, bravo! Yes, I am a very big fan of his work, because it is at once so unexpected on the one hand, and so true to human nature on the other. Maybe one day I can do a video focusing on Lynch films, but for now, let me say that I think FIRE WALK WITH ME is my favorite film of his, with other films I love being MULHOLLAND DR. and ERASERHEAD. My absolute favorite piece of film dialogue ever is from MULHOLLAND DR. "Don't drink all the Coke." Anyway, thank you very much, and best regards from Tokyo. For Bergman, "Fanny and Alexander" seems more interesting for me and closer to my general taste, so I'll maybe start with this one and check "The Seventh Seal" after this. As for good films I've seen recently, I'm pretty young (17) so I'm currently trying to watch "great" movies, so except if you've never heard of "A Clockwork Orange" or "Trainspotting", I can't really recommend you anything... except maybe some French movies that are not that famous outside of my country. For example, do you know "Jean de Florette" and "Manon des Sources" by Claude Berri ? It's a beautiful and heartbreaking diptych released in 1986 which is sometimes considered as the French "Godfather" (even if it's not really about gangsters). I'm usually not a fan of French dramas, but this one is truly moving and well-made. If you never heard of it, I highly recommend you these two. Cheers !

I am glad that I could win you over on Bad Timing! It is a very shocking film, but it is incredible in terms of its depiction of this relationship between a man and a woman. I think in many ways it excels in showcasing just how much human beings need each other and yet how dangerous and even horrifying that need can become. And Short Cuts, I will never ever be able to shake from my heart and mind. There is something so profound about the notion that grief and happiness can exist within the same space of persons.

Just picked up Crimes Of Passion (aka China Blue), and what a strange romp of relationships that one is! An unsung gem from 1984, and not sure if Bad Timing was before or after? I might become a pervert if this keeps up! LOL And BTW, have you seen the reboot of Fahrenheit 451? I thought it absolutely stunk! Nowhere near the atmosphere and texture of Truffaut and Roegs masterpiece. Yuck!
