I was talking with a friend recently how past eras are easily so definable based on style and appearance. The 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s are all so recognizable; the early 2000s probably had the last recognizable unique flavour. The last 15 years or so however seem very stagnant and homogeneous.

Edit: Also I thought of the perfect example of what you guys are talking about with the ingredients of modern day movies. There is a scene in the 80s The Fly movie, where the Dr is testing out his not working teleporter, and he teleports a steak dinner. His girl eats it and coughs it up saying "It tastes synthetic". The Dr reply's, "The computer is giving us its interpretation of a steak. It has all the data it needs, but something it getting lost in the translation, because it doesnt understand the flesh." And thats what it feels like what you guys are talking about with modern day movies. The creators interpreting stories, without understanding why they work. Modern day movies are synthetic. To be fair, I never watched the old film serials that Star Wars and Indiana Jones were based off, and I loved those movies. They were not in my cultural mind. You dont need to see the old things stuff is inspired by to enjoy new things.

The thing about those great old movies is that a lot of them were DIFFICULT to make. When you have the ability to create anything, then it becomes harder to make something special. Cut the budgets to $70M max and see what kind of movies get made... hopefully they will need the stories to carry them.

Great movie..the entire thing is a critiek on artistry and it's real appreciation vs snobism, elitism and proprietary. Every character in it is a fraud. exception being the "girl". Her date being the pretentious wealthy narcissist who can't distinguish the difference between knowing about an art and creating it. But considers himself a conneseur. The critic and her ass kissing assistant want to pretentiously talk and write about it, but again can't make it herself either. The big movie star just wants it for reputation sake as does the rich couple but they too don't truly appreciate it or understand just what it takes to create anything it but want it for it's exclusivity. The investors just want it because they have a financial stake in it and see a possibile profit but don't really care about it on anything but a monetary level. You can change the chef and his food with anything at all in the creative field and it still works. Use paintings for instance with those the same characters. Or a sculpture. It still applies. The chef could be replaced with a painter or sculpter who sold out and made his art exclusively to cater to those that have money. Losing their authenticity and originality and trading it for commercialism and popularity at the cost of it's very soul. One can't buy talent and inspiration, it's impossible to veins them. But one can squander them for a price. And knowing it's ingredients doesn't equal a original and authentic outcome. There is no recepy for true creativity. One can't force it either. Only at the cost is losing it.

Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter series was a big influence on Star Wars and many other Sci-Fi films and novels. I love his book "A Princess of Mars" and the other books in the series. Truly awesome and authentic reads and some of the first real Sci-Fi novels before Sci-Fi was even a thing.

Late 19th century asymetric engaments with small entrenched units armed with machine guns actually turned the odds against armies far larger than 8000. It just never occurred to them that this time, the enemy also had machine guns. Massed infantry, cavalry, creeping artillery barrages, air raids, chemical warfare. All tried and failed to break the lines of humble infantry men armed with machine guns. During that conflict, single battles had such disastrously high casualties that they eclipsed the casualties of every war in antiquity. Tell me, what could 8000 roman legions armed with javalines and short swords do if they were thrown into such a horrific meat grinder?

As far as women not creating fantasy/sci-fi, that might be true for films and TV shows, but it certainly isn't for books. For classic fantasy we've got Ursula K LeGuin's 'Earthsea' series which I think is only beaten by Tolkien, you have Evangeline Walton's reworkings of the Welsh Mabinogion, you have Katherine Kurtz's 'Deryni' series, you have Andre Norton's 'Witch World' series, and a whole bunch of SciFi, then there are Marion Zimmer Bradley's 'Darkover' books, and those are just the ones I've read that I can think off the top of my head. And for modern fantasy, I'm surprised there isn't more mention of Susanna Clarke's 'Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell', which was not only an excellent book, but was also turned into a great TV series. Rowling isn't alone in this genre at all.

Yup, especially the low budget part. While it's no guarantee, it's certainly a strong catalyst for good writing. As they say "Necessity is the mother of invention", and to a similar degree a low budget/lack of resources or options means you have to really think about how to accomplish whatever it is you're trying to do. That restriction can really push a creator to make something truly inspired, since they aren't just brute forcing everything by throwing money at it.

Here's the new Indiana Jones movie they should have made if you're gonna use time travel: Old Indy regrets a choice he made in the past. Cut to flashbacks of young Indy on an adventure we've never seen. Somebody tells old Indy "what if you could go back and change it". This leads old Indy on an adventure to find the dial. The movie cuts from old Indy to young Indy having adventures that are both narratively driving the plot forward and comically showing the difference between young and old. Young Indy is strong, brash and impulsive and makes mistakes. Old Indy is slower, but more measured and clever. Maybe young Indy punches a car window to get to a bad guy and cuts his arm. Cut to a scar on old Indy's arm, the camera pulls back and old Indy throws a brick through the window of a bad guys car.The third act is old Indy back in time watching young Indy. Old Indy has to make a choice at a pivotal moment: change the past or allow the same mistake to happen because mistakes help us grow and learn and they are part of who we are. Old Indy watches, pained, at the choice but he remembers his dad saying "let it go, son". He smiles, turns the dial and disappears as the young Indy rides off toward adventure. Cue music.

Various thoughts: 1. The discussion on nanotech suits vs. mechanical. When we really have nano suits then the original Iron Man stuff becomes that era's equivalent of Steam Punk and has male appeal for the same reasons. 2. Chato mentioned the "brutal" environment at pre-Disney Pixar. It sounds very much like the frequent suggestions of running scripts past the EFAP crew. It would be be brutal but not in a cruel way. 3. Back during the late Stars Wars prequel era, I (and many others) were convinced that George Lucas had come to hate the fanbase due to their complaints. What if the entire Disney thing was Lucas saying "you think *my* prequels suck? Wait until Disney gets through with it.".

I would say the fact that iron man's suit took some time to come together even with something like the suitcase suit, which is dope, it makes him somewhat still vulnerable to attack while half of it is wrapping around him. Unlike the, I'm instantly covered in nanoshit in a millisecond, in the middle of a swing of a punch that could be about to hit me. It's dull because again, they are just taking away stakes at every turn. When you can instantly will a magic bullshit impenetrable armour out of thin air, like when they give spiderholland that tech, it removes something from the tension.

Yes but the film they introduced the nanosuit in they showed it’s obvious flaws and shortcomings when fighting Thanos. So I don’t really no what your point is, since both the films he has the nanosuit in Thanos still kicks his ass 1v1. The nanosuit allowed him to transfer the stones from the nano glove to his own suit, which symbolizes him outsmarting Thanks when he wasn’t able to outbox him.

@@stokedtobe that's not really my point. They wrote it that way which is fine. It's better to have him be more mechanical based because he's more vulnerable. Saying, "thanos kicked his ass in a 1vs1" means nothing, when he kicked the shit out of hulk in a literal 1vs1. We should expect thanos to demolish iron man in a 1vs1, tear him limb from limb, then stomp his corpse into dust. It's not really surprising that he'd be beat by him no matter what his tech is.

I think you guys should team up and call yourselves, "The Motion Picture Inquisition". Have a movie on trial, with a defense and prosecution. Sometimes the defense will not be present and an empty shot of a chair will be shown.(or the critical doggo) Rotate the judges amongst yourselves or have many judges and movies such as a Kryptonian trial. "Take a look at this guy. Go on. Take a good, long look. You see? They just didn't care about this film!"

What they do not like about the character she portrays along with other characters like hers is the unearned yet demanded respect and the sheer arrogance of a character that is better than the protagonist without any reason or justification for it. It's different if we were along for her character's journey, but we were not. And this character that we've been through their journey for 42 years is being shit on by this "Janey Come Lately" with zero character charisma and zero redeeming qualities.

Equilibrium was fantastic. It is an adaptation of the book farenheid 451. A similar story though not quite the same. I spent a few years out there trying to sell scripts, like a lot of naive youngsters, and the first thing that happens if you do get lucky enough to get a deal is the studio will have someone come behind you and re-write your script. A huge production has probably seen half a dozen writers do their own version. The producers are covering their ass. If it fails they can say well we hired the best writers etc.... Then there is the old mysterious associate producer ladder at the studio. Once a project gets a star attached, you'll suddenly see another half dozen "producers" attached to the project. Each of them get a nice fee for their input, which in many cases is minimal. The costs add up to $ 100 million in useless pork salaries. It's a form of corporate welfare like no other industry

Saw The Flash this past weekend, it did have a few redeeming qualities. The 3rd act climax where Barry has to come to terms with failure is played straight & not undercut by bad humor. The final scene with his mom was genuinely touching & sincere. Supergirl wasn't really in the movie long enough to leave a lasting impression, but she seemed to be possessed of the same sort of nobility Clark himself has. If we ever saw the same actress reprise the role in some future film I wouldn't mind. 2.5 hours is a long time though, and Act 2 really fucking drags on into misery territory.

I actually really like the nanotech Iron Man suit. Not because of what it can do but because they made the plating on the sleeves match the musculature of the arm in a way that evoked the form fitting way it was drawn in the old comics. But if I had to pick a favorite superhero costume from any movie, BvS Batman. It was the best thing about that movie.
