The thing with Cortosis is that it's from the EU. You know, the EU that Disney nuked into oblivion and declared non-canon. If you want to introduce that, you have to EARN it. You have to give SOME kind of explanation for what you are seeing. Instead they just clearly ripped it off Wookiepedia and just expected everybody to know what was happening.

I read maybe 12 EU back in the 90s and I don't remember it (or it was obscure as fuck). Disney can't just chuck it in and expect people to know it. Also, the EU was never canon. It was always understood that the movies were the only canon. The EU were just "extras" or whatever. The reason Cortosis didn't become popular I suspect is because it's a fucking stupidd idea.

Cortosis and Cortosis Based Alloys appeared a lot in the Knights of the Old Republic Games, Comics, etc. Cortosis was EXTREMELY Rare by the time of the Phantom Menace, and A New Hope. Bringing it out of nowhere was incredibly stupid. Star Wars is truly in the Dark Times...

Back in the before Disney times, I wrote a couple of Star Wars fics, and the audience I got for those stories was SO strict, deeply versed in and obsessed with canon compared to any other franchise I wrote for before or since. As soon as Disney started abusing the canon, they were in huge trouble, and I feel like any fan fic writer could've told them that. I dunno, maybe my experience was unique in that regard 🤷‍♀

It used to be simple - the movies are canon, everything else is not (until they put it in a movie). I read lots of EU in the 90s and everyone knew is wasn't canon, although some things like Han's background, the Jedi Twins and Thrawn became canon in the fans' eyes.

I still think that in Disney Star Wars the writers think about the story backwards: they think about the scenes first and then about the story to tie them together after they have a list. Wouldn't it be great to see "horses" racing along the side of a star destroyer? Wouldn't it be wonderful to find the place of an artifact by following a shadow or a silhouette? Wouldn't it be nice to destroy a fleet with a suicide charge from a starship jumping to hyperspace? ....... and this continues with all subsequent shows up to Acolyte. They don't understand that they're not writing for a Wile E. Coyote cartoon.

A little context about cortosis: Originally, it was just lightsaber resistant (see KOTOR 1&2 and Jedi Outcast). The reason for its limited use was its rarity, difficulty to refine, and cost. It was weaved into weapons( like carbon fiber in the real world) like vibroblades to allow users to fight against lightsabers. Again, resistant NOT proof and definitely not an auto disable button for lightsabers.

Pure Cortosis is able to disable Lightsabers, but pure Cortosis was extremely rare, because using it as an alloy for multiple uses made vastly more sense. Phrik was another rare metal that was resistant to Lightsabers as well.

Mentioning the cinematography in The Empire Strikes Back... I don't think any movie has ever better matched the look and feel of a very cold environment. Below a certain temperature, the air just starts to look white-gray, and Empire really brought that out in the Hoth scenes.

Regarding weather in movies. Something that pisses me off to no end is when people, like for example, John Snow, is beyond the wall up in freezing temperatures and nobody wears head protection. I live in the north of Sweden and I know how it feels when it's -30 to 40 degrees celsius. If you don't protect your head you will die in less then an hour. 50% of your body heat goes out through your head.

Listening to all the talk about Star Wars and all the check boxes, etc. in the production team, I started to think, how weird is it that we are now actively rooting for a company to come along who cares about making money? And that made me think: the world we are living in now is the one created by the likes of Harlan Ellison who spent his entire career kicking against the restraints put on him by commercial television and crying out for creators' rights and the need to make "art". The Acolyte writers needed to watch writers Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park) give tips to a class about writing 'beats' of a story - if in-between beats you transition with an "and then", the story sucks. The transition should connect with a "therefore" and/or a "but" because then the story's events are reacting to each other. The Acolyte writing is like: this happens, then this happens, etc. It lacks cohesiveness of story, character and motivations.

Simply put, the Sith is too overpowered. It makes a joke of the Jedi. The scene where the Sith makes a Jedi shish kebab is ridiculous. He used a force pull to do that. 2 Jedi's stuck on a lightsaber? Why didn't they use the force. If it was comedy it would make more sense.

When Luke Collapsed on Hoth he was just outside the Hotel Doorway where the Camera was sitting. There was a huge Blizzard and so the Snow wasn't fake and neither was the Cold!

Cortosis was in the first video game with Kyle katarn where he has to go to the sith home world and fight the seven sith. I can't remember the name but it was made by Lucas arts and had live action cutscenes.

Even though acolyte shoved in that magic metal on screen without any setup, they still couldn't help messing it up and making the lightsaber disruption last anywhere from 5-10 seconds instead of the traditional 1-2 minutes in the EU.

I thought this out with a friend the other day and we fixed the Cortosis thing in what I feel is a great way while also filling other issues that many have seen with the script and I'd like to see if people can think of a better way or extra things to be added to our concept. #1 Mae has a Cortosis Dagger. It shorts out Jedi Trinity's lightsaber and THAT is the shocking way she gets stabbed and dies. #2 The fight is described by the eye-witness to Yord/Sol. #3 The Jedi find reference to Cortosis in the archives and THAT is the reason they call Sol and the others back to Coruscant at the end of Episode 2. #4 They describe what was found in the archives about Cortosis to everyone to give us an idea of the powers THEY intend for it to have in canon. #5 By doing the exposition and putting into place their vision of the material and also its rarity/usage they still maintain the possible shock of it being made into armor, but allow the audience to understand the interactions in episode 5.

The lightsaber choreography was bad - just because they gave us some lightsaber wielding dudes did not made episode 5 any better than the rest. There was so much obvious moments where Smilo Ren could have been cut down by the Jedi but was not... simply dumb action!

I saw the prequels before the original, all the kids born about 30 years ago got into Star Wars from the prequels. Edge of Tommorow was a lovely surprise. I didnt know what to expect, other than another time loop premise. Some people have grown tired of that trope, and they feel its been overdone. I always enjoy those movies though. Happy Death day, Before I fall, Groundhog day, etc. The difference is that this movie did more with the trope than any of the other ones I mentioned. Every single day that the MC went through felt more meaningful and as the movie entered the final act, I've never rooted more for a time loop MC

The one show I’m convinced the creators listened to audience criticism is the first season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand. It started out as a shitty 300 clone, but it just got better as the season went on. I’m sure the second season would have been just as good had the main actor not died and been replaced.

People trying to justify the existence of cortosis in the Acolyte with 'it was in the EU DUH!' forget that Disney literally rebranded the EU into Legends because they wanted to make their own lore and ignore the EU's. Alas, all the hacks they hired were too creatively bankrupt to come up with any good ideas on their own so Disney had to resort to copying the EU. The problem is that they don't bother to write the things they are copying into the story properly so anything taken from the EU is introduced with the grace of a wrecking ball.

Disagree w/ Despot. I don't think the choreography was that good. NOthing about the actors but they used trees/bad lighting to conceal how bad it was done. THen the headbutting lightsabers just looks ass.

The thing about rare materials in Star Wars is that, just because they exist, some people can't wrap their mind around a thing not being everywhere. I mean, iridium is quite useful material, many good qualities... when is the last time you saw a large amount of it? Or any? And we are on just one planet. We are talking about a galaxy-spanning Republic (I am not sure everyone is able to fathom the scale of such a setting), so even if something that can short-circuit the lightsaber exists, very few would have even heard of it, and of those who did would consider it a rumor. We having materials that are mined on one or two fringe places in a galaxy that has 3.2 billion of inhabited planets, very hard to refine and make something out of... so why would you even expect everyone to be aware of it, let alone wear it? I mean, SW is at fault sometimes as well, as they do not represent the scale in the best way, but Jedi not knowing something existing in a galaxy is not only expected, it is basically a rule. And even when they find out about something, records get lost all the time due to the sheer amount of information floating around in a galaxy-spanning republic/empire. Entire star systems were deleted from the charts without anyone noticing - remember how Obi-Wan stumbled upon Kamino by pure chance and even chief Jedi librarian in the Archives was like "Nah, there is nothing there, it does not exist!"? So we are talking about extremely rare and difficult to obtain/refine material, with some useful properties against lightsabres, bad at many other things, that a handful of Jedi might encounter in the Outer Rim once every few centuries at best... And there is someone arguing how stupid it is that not everyone is wearing it or knowing about it? The fact that average viewers did not know about it actually aligns with the worldbuilding. Acolyte is an absolutely dreadful show, deserves less than 10% in the scores, and 99.9% of your criticism stands... but this one point does not. It made sense that the bad guy would have a bracelet and a helmet out of it, and it made sense that it shattered when the blunt force was applied but it didn't when it was hit by a lightsaber.

the prequels absolutely were hated by gen x and older millinials. this is revisionist history. the kids who grew up with it and the clone wars show redeemed its overall rep
