Agreed. He built 3 teams in Saudi Arabia, no wonder Saudia surprised everyone this year. I think he played a part of that. People go criticizing Belgium and Brazil for not having game. They do not realize that defense and Dalic's strategy has everything to do with that. Dalic has talked about it in one of the press conferences after the game, but no one takes time to translate one of the greates coaches of all time. He is not a great coach because he was a great player. He is a great coach because he studied coaching and leadership WHILE HE WAS A PLAYER. Croatia has no forwards so they played to their strengths which is ball retention and tempo control. They did that magnificently, I think they even had slightly more possession than Brazil. Apart from a short patch in the first half and about 15 minutes late in the second Brazil wasn't able to completely impose themselves. With Brazil's ridiculous attacking talent and willingness to push on from almost any position they're always going to create chances. But what Croatia did is they stayed disciplined, and fought till the very end. We got to see once they went behind that they could be more direct. I just don't know how many teams who play Brazil would decide to even half open up against them. Watch Argentina play them and it's usually one sided with the Argies looking to counter. This Croatian team doesn't have a Messi and they're not as good as 2018 but they're just as tough if not tougher than four years ago.

Even though less noticed, Modric was literally steering the whole team and he was just flying all over the place to make sure he support others and gets the ball to pass it where it should be. Very much appreciated and he scored a really cool penalty as well. Worth the hard work.

Brazil had 11 shots but to be honest most of them weren't dangerous. The most dangerous one was actually deflected from Gvardiol. Croatia had one shot and that one came in but theyndid had some great opportunities for a goal. Perisic missed the ball in clear chance 5 meters from goal. Brozovic also had a great chance that went over the goal. Regarding the possession it was 50%50 and number of passes were also very close. Just like the number of corners. It was a tight match. I wouldn't say any team was better but Croatia had more luck and when it comes to penalties Croatia is just more experienced and calmer. They've been there so many times before.

There's no getting around it. We're small and we don't have an army of supporters to make us seem bigger.. so the rest of the world can easily shout over us saying we're small and it will never stop. It is amazing how experts cannot see the basics. Too bad Coach Dalič's analysis is NOT translated to English. First of all, Croatia did not pound the ball from anywhere. They concentrated for clean easy goals based on passing. They had exactly HALF the ball control, none of you mention that. The Brazilian antics of faking injuries Croatia planned for and they did NOT fall into their frustration-creating game. Croatia, with great defense (as good as Morocco or Belgium or better), used their skills and intelligence to not ever let Brazil find their rhythm. This is not a MISTAKE of Brazil, this is a SKILL of Croatia. A skill of a coach that also developed the Saudi Arabian league. Another point English-language media has not captured. The main difference is Croatia don't have forwards whereas Brazil is loaded with them...but Croatia has a better midfield and defense. As to 5 Brazilian WCs, sure, that's notable but in the past. Croatia only started competing in 1998 and has compared very well with Brazil or any nation since then. True, we've not broken through to win. But Croatia has the talent, skill, and mentality to challenge consistently...remarkable for a nation of 4M. We need a more complete team. Again, we lack forwards. That's why we play a possession game trying to create chances for average forwards...which is what cost us against Argentina in this WC. Consider last WC we beat Argentina because we were more balanced, with Mandukic, Rebic, and Kramaric being effective up front.

Defense wins you games. That backline of Croatia is the best out of any team. Including the goalie of course. Coupled with a midfield that has a great understanding, fluency, and highly technical which went toe to toe with Bra in the first half where Bra was doing more of the ball retrieving. Minus an attack or without any real goalscorers. Petkovic's goal was rubbish and lucky but it's the points I make at the beginning which is the eye-catcher for the Cro team. It's the engine and driving force not to be underestimated. How much Rebic and one other decent striker will mean in the final hurdle? Only a date with destiny will tell. And all set for a showdown with the Argies first and I'll go with Mor to reach the final.

There has to be some excuses for Brazil, not the fact that we played tactically and used up opportunity when it presented itself. We didn't rush into scoring because we knew that we will create that opportunity. After we lost to Argentina, I haven't seen any comments about them winning because Croatia had a bad day, because that's not how things work. And pens are part of a freaking training session. How do you think a goalkeeper learns to best defend, and strikers how to best strike? They shoot on the goal 1v1.... From the first day you start to practice football.
