Today’s tutorial is a play off of one of my older videos, 7 Tips To Improve Your Yarn Tension for beginners. In that video I mentioned a crochet tension regulator and in today’s video I’m showing a complete updated version of the yarn tension regulator (also called a finger tension ring). I will also explain how to use it and how it could benefit those with arthritis, hand pain, or skin sensitivity.
Within the video you will find the crochet tension regulator pattern as well as tips on how to use it. Enjoy!

Can't get tension right? I know, let's do double-crotchet* in a tiny circle with a what the bloody hell now stitch slip thingie eh wot? Mine wasn't very good. One side was there inches higher than the other, it looked like a trumpet. And fell off my finger 😠 HOWEVER....can I have a drum roll please? Or vague attention at least. I'm needy. I discovered the perfect tension-thingy; those very stretchy ponytail bands. Not the thin ones, the ones that used to made of towelling but dunno what now (I'll find a link if anyone wants one) Controls the tension perfectly and is fully adjustable for different size wool. I just have to persuade the cat to give it back... *renamed cos it makes me crotchetty!

I would really like to know more about where to get these ponytail bands and how you use them! My tension is so bad I can’t even manage a single chain! And it’s so frustrating because knitting doesn’t give me anywhere near this much trouble. Even finger loop braiding was easier than trying to crochet!
@randomhumanoidblob4506
@randomhumanoidblob4506 Жыл бұрын
@Ciriun Here ya go. I'm fairly sure it's these, tho you can get different sizes. I'm afraid I bought mine so long ago I can't remember if they were mixed sizes, but I've used all the sizes I have and they all work, I just wrap the larger ones round my finger one more time. I can crochet now and no longer need them (finally made the bloody regulator too, but not in the round) but altho I have tried every type of ring, regulator etc, I still use them for finer yarns when my hand gets tired cos they're the most comfortable. If you have an old pair of leggings lying around I'd guess you could make a similar small loop with an offcut - anything stretchy and soft with no "grab" should work. One tip I do have for learning is use a thicker yarn - I'd never have mastered it with anything below worsted/aran weight, especially as the first couple of rows are always the hardest. At least if the tension is controlled it's another thing to not have to worry about. Hope this helps and best of luck 🤗 www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ELASTIC-ENDLESS-PONYTAIL-BOBBLES-HAIR-BANDS-BLACK-MIX-COLOUR-TOWELLING-TYPE-NEW/281044446463?hash=item416f8decff:g:Fw4AAOSwoZJdnh0c&amdata=enc:AQAIAAAA0BMUPv6Ex22IYb3/pwdCtHqKG4Hn1YD/Vl3309G0yx6RZGuBCNrRoaV/cJyF/QrX2vy8DWorq8T4PaxFeAkTtkjcPbMDhOtY5UR8Pf6wqM+55eFwZnyNLwYF+NbXrkOvo476RkUuBdqLij2WRlXUj8GHRVl7JZhMOWn2bKksjmMtsgF8XShZhnFWB+vJUJ6vpAl5mIplTRu8oXHsM6T01SF+IoX8J0awVUi5/2Sso4JINtp+9XXHjEpVM3Mym0AWlUVF0JsZ3L/L00NV3KyNAfA=%7Ctkp:Bk9SR7in_YWUYg&pageci=d1d7356c-8a02-4248-8f85-769000fd9afc&redirect=mobile

@Ciriun Oops, forgot to say how to use... You just wrap it round your finger. They're small rings made of soft, stretchy fabric so you just stick it on your index finger and double up, exactly as you would when using elastic bands to keep something together. Run the yarn through it just as you would with any other ring and you're done. Because even the smallest one will loop round your finger at least twice, you can then either run the yarn underneath both loops or just one. It sounds horribly complicated but it's exactly the same as wrapping an elastic band round your finger, only softer and far more comfortable.

I think that's awesome though and a great work-out for ones upper thighs. Holding your yarn tension with your knees is impressive if you ask me! I've been trying to find a way to do it with my toes because I have this terrible way of keeping my tension and I just can't seem to break the habit (31 years of holding tension the same way, so it's pretty ingrained...lol), which is terrible because the way I hold my tension is PAINFUL when working with things like crochet thread, DK/Sport. Worsted weight and above, it's no problem.

I immediately thought of my eight year old grandson who wants to learn to crochet. It is awkward for him to understand how to wrap the yarn and hold the tension as well as manipulating the hook to make a chain. WOW! I could see the advantage of him having only one task to concentrate on at a time thus eliminating his frustration. I guess I will need to make a smaller version for him when I visit at the end of July. Thank you so much from sunny Queensland, I Australia.

This is a total game changer for me! I love crocheting but have issues with my baby fingers and end up with what I refer to as ‘pinky fatigue’ and my pinky’s feel like they are going to lock up and I lose total strength and can’t control my tension at all. This has allowed me to have total control, tighten up my stitches and crochet for hours without any issue! Thank you so very, very much!

Using the tension regulator combined with using a straight-necked hook at first like Susan Bates', versus Boye, was indeed a game-changer and really got me from limping to going. I think I might be weening off of the regulator now for granny squares, but it remains to be seen if I might need it for extra-consistent, small gauge loom-knit-looking stitches for Amigurumi and such.

This was an absolute game changer for me! It works better than the tensioners you can buy! I’ve tried pretty much every style and tactic and this is the BEST! It was a little difficult to make since I needed one to make one, 😂, but even with my ugly, misshapen first try, I was able to finally crochet! (And then I went back and made another that was prettier!) I also have the beginnings of arthritis and stiffness in my hands so I wouldn’t be able to comfortably crochet otherwise.

Why throw it away? It was only one square. I'm not mocking you. I'm trying to help. Was it a weave? As that what happened to one of my projects. I made a coaster for my mum. She washed it and said it came apart as I didn't weave it properly so she took the rest of it apart. So I go up a bit further and either put a tiny bit of clear PVA on it or candle wax.. But PVA works better, only a fab though on the ends.

This is so cool.😂 I made one, played around with it. I find that I like to put it on ring finger, thread the yarn up and down trhough 3 stitches. With ring finger being shorter, I made another one with 8 ch and hdc. Fits perfectly now. My issue with tension is too tight, and my hands gets tired from over stretching from holding the yarn. So far, the regulator have helped with holding the yarn, my hand is bit more relaxed. Thank you!

Thank you very much. This is genius and so helpful! When i was making this, I was struggling with my tension 😅 It would either be too tight or too loose, l usually crochet too tight. So I got frustrated but I managed it finish it with my pink yarn and it does its job perfectly even if it doesn't look like the one in the video (it has a bit of flared bottom because I made my tension too loose) Hopefully this is help me improve, it already feels so much better to crochet with this 😋 I will be making another one with this regulator and seeing if it turns out better. Good luck with your crocheting, everyone!

Thanks for this. I feel like this is also helpful for continental knitting. I don’t seem to have. Problem with crochet tension but I’m starting to learn how to continental knit (to speed up some vs. English knitting) and having some tension issues there. I’ll try this out.

Yes, I totally understand that. But if you can figure it out it will help so much! If it's turning out too loose, try using a smaller hook to see if that helps with your tension. You can make it as big or as small as you'd like, just make sure the starting chain wraps around your finger. I hope that helps!

I love this! I have tried other metal types but cannot get them to work properly. For me though, you cannot work two colours at the same time or you have to cut the color. I experimented a bit and created a flap at the top about 5 stitches wide and then have two tiny buttons to hold the flap down and it works perfectly!

This is such a great tutorial! Unfortunately, as I am rather young (at least, still living under my parents' roof) I have access to pretty limited supplies since my parents do not want to buy me any extra yarn or hooks until I prove I'll stick with it. As it is, I only have a couple balls of yarn and two hooks, 6 and 6.5 mm from my grandmother. Is this still possible to make even though I have larger hooks? What adjustments do I need to make?
