What I appreciate is that Kamala didn’t take the opportunity, while having Liz right there in camera with her, to push policies Cheney fundamentally disagrees with. She didn’t talk about abortion or prices or money for housing or anything, even though she absolutely could have taken advantage of that moment. They both only took the opportunity to talk about their mutual concern about Trump and country and democracy. It was so decent.

A large part of the reason half the country thinks there is nothing wrong with handing Trump the launch codes again is that Biden de-facto pardoned all the Jan 6 ringleaders and top level organizers back in 2021. Not holding any of them to account until the _next_ election comes around sends precisely that exact message. It is the reason the Dems had to switch their messaging from "Treason!!1" to "Weird!!1" The Republicans are clearly out _again_ to *steal the election* rather than win it. Exactly as Sarah Kendzior predicted it in 2021 after Biden de-facto pardoned the Jan 6 ringleaders. They are not even _trying_ to hide it. And still I don't get the impression Americans are taking the threat seriously. It's gonna be abortion all over again. All the warning signs have been there, you have been warned for years in advance, yet when it "suddenly" happens, you're all gonna act surprised. *Steve Bannon's **_"precinct strategy"_* entails signing up hordes of brainwashed magats as *poll workers* at the local precinct level where votes are counted. It didn't work last time due to uncooperative officials but this time, *the magats will **_be_** the officials.* Just one of many Republican prongs of attack. They are organizing it right in the open.

The thing that annoys me the most about the oil prices is two fold. 1. The US executive branch has no control over it. 2. Unfortunately, discussing this plays somewhat into the GQP's 'rising prices' line, but would you give up your ability to vote if you had $1k to spend, or $5, or what? Use of the word, Democracy, is like using the word, liberal. If, like Michael Moore did, you poll people on social issues - abortion, health care, gun control, etc - the significant majority of their answers will come back liberal. But, if you ask those same people, on a scale of 1-10, how liberal are you, they’d give you a very low number. Most Americans ARE liberal & DO prefer democracy, but those two terms have become tainted.

In a developed democracy which already has a robust system of voter registration the additional requirement that people bring id to the polls pretty much universally results in eligible people being disenfranchised. The local authority knows how many people to expect to vote and knows how to prevent more than one person voting under the same name. If anyone ever attempts that an investigation would follow that would be pretty easily resolvable by simply checking with the registered person living at the address they are listed under. If this sort of thing was happening all the time we'd know about it, but it turns out the vast majority of people have no problem following these rules and almost no fraud ever takes place. In the UK our last government introduced a law requiring voters bring id. It was the Conservative government led by Boris Johnson, the most notorious and prolific liar ever to lead the country who saw Trump's style and liked it. The result was predictable. It's estimated that around 370,000 people were disenfranchised in this years' election for not having the right id, or not being aware of the law. Fortunately we got rid of the Conservative government, but in many of our constituencies (because in our elections we vote for local candidates and the biggest party then forms government) the margins were tiny. Some candidates won by a matter of 100's of votes. There was one case that someone won by single digits. This law absolutely impacted on the result of our election. There should be no illusion about the intent behind any move to make voting harder, whether by id requirements or any other trick. When a party that depends on your vote has stopped believing in democracy that party is no longer worthy to participate in it and has to be defeated before it brings everything down with itself.
