Is crossfit truly inclusive enough to bring in new athletes to the sport? No. Does it bring in random movements every year that don't seem to have anything to do with being functionally fit? Yes. It was only a matter of time before Crossfit started to have rivals, especially in the competition space. With more scaled competitions and the crossfit open raising their standards way out of reach of beginners, it was bound to happen. Hyrox has begun to overtake crossfit on google trends, and going to fitfest last week and seeing ATHX, a competition that's very much like hyrox sell out and do really well, its clear to see there are rivals filling the gaps. Could hyrox and athx take over? Its certainly possible. Wat does this mean for functional training?

I think a big reason for the increasing Scaled division standards for many CF comps (I’m in the US) is because athletes that are able to compete Rx intentionally register for Scaled divisions because they want a better chance to land on the podium. Lame as it seems to me, it happens everywhere because there are always people who want to win more so than kill themselves for a low position in Rx. So, I think a lot of comps have had to normalize to that, hence, more difficult Scaled standards. Some have 3+ divisions where it isn’t as big of an issue, but many don’t. Unfortunately I don’t see Rx sandbaggers ever going away haha.

I only made it about 5min through the video before I couldn't take any more. Basically it sounds like you want a place and program for people who don't prioritize fitness (compared to people who are capable of meeting a minimum standard that you don't agree with) and you want an opportunity to be rewarded for it.

CrossFit is very inclusive but the barrier to entry to be competitive is higher. You can do banded pull-ups and jumping pull-ups. I would also say the barrier to entry to be competitive in most sports is higher than just participating recreationally. I do agree with the “party tricks” movements

I’m so happy that I’m in an amazing and inclusive box whit coaches who aim for good health and fitness at every level ❤ I’ve heard a lot from others coming from other boxes that it’s not inclusive, especially not with the scaled athletes. Makes me sad. I hope there will be a more positive change in the future

That’s amazing!! How do your coaches approach the rising standards with the scaled open workouts?

@@sportybeth they keep going like they always did. Making it possible for any athlete at any level. Also introducing courses where we focus on one specific movement like for example, a full day of in depth skillwork with toes to bar, or pull ups etc, it’s been really nice and helping a lot with progress and making many scaled athletes getting their first RX movements!😄

Don’t let the thought of “post baby” hold you back. Some of the top elite crossfires have children. Annie Thorsdoitter even got on the podium at the games

I agree that some crossfit comp movements might not be as functional as others, and they can be daunting to learn. Would you consider the training for hyrox and other potential rivals to crossfit constantly varied? Does your crossfit gym not have the occasional long metcon?
@sportybeth
@sportybeth 10 ай бұрын
No I don’t think hyrox for instance is constantly varied and neither is athx. But being constantly varied isn’t the point of them. They’re just there to test all round general fitness which I like. I’m starting to think the “constantly varied” part of CrossFit is at fault for the party tricks. Yes the gym I go to does do the occasional long metcon. In fact they’re semi regular. But as the average member only attends a gym about 3 times a week it’s easy to miss that workout. But also as I said, those long metcons don’t get you fit in the same way as say a 5-10k row or bike does. It’s just so different.

I’m located in the southern part of the US and I’m not familiar with Hyrox or the other hybrid. I could tell that carrying the CrossFit brand is a burden on some gyms/boxes and I am a scaled athlete and seeing pull-ups in a competition is discouraging, but I have noticed CF trying to reach out to the older populations. I’m in my early 40’s, so not young and not old…I would try the other options if it were offered. I’ve been at my box for 4 years, and just not getting more efficient with my movements. I’m still excited to go to CF and to work at getting closer to a pull up and double unders…also, I used to be a runner so the others options sound interesting.

I think that’s it isn’t in the longer it goes on when you’re struggling to do some of the movements and you feel like you’ve been giving it everything for years other options start to seem more interesting. Hyrox is global but people travel to them I think. If you google it itl show the US ones for you 😁

Another event series is Deka, a branch off of the Spartan races. It has 3 main events: Dekalb Fit, Deka Strong, and Deka Mile. It has a lot of similarities to Hyrox, but you can choose your level of running, or do the Trifecta, and they aren't as strict with the individual exercises. I'm hoping it becomes more common in Oregon where I am 😊

Yes!! I’ve heard of it. I think it’s more common in the US than globally but I did wonder if I should touch on that it definitely sits in the same bracket! Hopefully it continues to grow.

I think the approach to getting the all important first pull up could be wrong. A pull up is a combined effort of lots of muscle groups. Using resistance bands and negatives is quite a good method to assist and eventually achieve pull up strength. But I think training muscles individually with assistance exercises, rows, raises ETC will do more to achieve pull up strength. What we term as bodybuilding exercises were originally invented to increase strength to enable people to do callisthenics.
@sportybeth

Yeah and so many people (myself included) took years to get their first pull-up. But it’s such a baseline in most CrossFit workouts. In the general fitness community a pull-up is a huge milestone. But in CrossFit it’s almost the bottom of the pile

but if youre not getting better at something then you are not getting fitter ?
@sportybeth
@sportybeth 9 ай бұрын
Well that’s not true. You can be really good at handstand push ups, handstand walks and muscle ups but not be fit at all. You can get loads better at cardio and general fitness without improving those things. There’s a difference between skills and fitness.
@leebradford770
@leebradford770 9 ай бұрын
@@sportybeth that’s not true. You can’t do any of those movements without strength and balance (and also motor skill and coordination). Both strength and balance are elements of fitness. Cardio is not the only element of fitness. It is possible to run say 1km faster than you did previously without being fitter simply by pushing yourself through pain barriers. Obviously if you ran it faster for the same amount of effort then your cardio fitness would have improved. But again, that is only one element of fitness.

The ridiculous increase in skills for Scaled is a massive turnoff for me for Crossfit. Between that and the obsessive measuring requirements mean I will probably never pay for another Open. I have always worked out from home and will never be an RX athlete. I have made my peace with that. However, the new direction is ruining the fun for me. The major emphasis for gymnastics that you mention in the Games made me roll my eyes and stop watching. "Party tricks" NAILS it! We're never going to do that in real life! The elitism has also gotten really old.
@sportybeth
@sportybeth 9 ай бұрын
Oh yeah the measurements get to me too. Our gym de-affiliated so I’d also have to film all the measurements and videos get disallowed for the tiniest of things. During lockdown I did the open in my garage and my videos got disallowed because I didn’t have enough space for their stupid distance between movements. Like sorry I live in the UK and our garages aren’t US size 😂. I personally actually quite like watching the gymnastics stuff. But it’s got past the point we can pretend it’s about fitness and not party tricks haha
