There are a lot of high risk moments happening in nearly every test at every competition. But the announcers don’t understand the nuances of the sport so they don’t explain them to the audience. So some tests seem boring when really they’re not. At least in my opinion. I mean baseball is sort of ‘boring’ but with great announcers they help you understand the chess game that’s occurring under the surface. Overall I completely understand where you’re coming from, but a lot of the things you’re suggesting are Manufacturing drama. They border on gimmicky, and yes might be initially more exciting visually. They would likely lead to a lot of inaccuracies in athlete’a overall rankings if done frequently or incorrectly. The more trap-doors you program, it can quickly become a circus act game show and not a sporting competition. However I love the general idea of designing workouts to ensure they’re more spectator friendly!

Overall I love this video. I think you’re really onto something here. I’ll send you an IG dm man!
@masonstartup14107 ай бұрын
I agree, I think the announcers,camera angles and stream set up could all be improved which would already make for a more engaging watch. I think some of what I said defintley could be seeking to manufacture drama, but thats what we get with a professional sport. But I think these things can ride a line between making things more dramatic while also fitting within the crossfit methodology. These event formats will only lead to innacuracies if done too often or poorly programmed you’re completely right. But, used correctly i think they are valid tests of fitness. It all goes back to variance. I think if there is ENOUGH variance the fittest will rise to the top. For example, had there not been such agressive cuts in 2019 (which is a whole other topic) and you had been able to compete in a broader range of tests, your fitness would have shown. That second cut was only 1 of 5 workouts you got to do that year (which is not a complete test at all). But in my opinion the unbroken requirement on second cut was a valid test and fits in the methodology. Im not saying these need to be in a ton of events, or we don’t even have see them every year, but I think they could definitely be used more often than they have been.

completely agree....likely there is no actual director running the media. What I mean is someone in charge of the audio and video so that when video is interesting the audio is matching that in real time. And vice versa. This person would have to be deeply into the CrossFit game--knowing all the athletes and their strengths and weaknesses to really make it work. Think NFL...
@MatthewJwelty7 ай бұрын
unbroken requirement was included on the single unders in the 2022 Games.
@jater106 ай бұрын
It is good to have. But to the non-CrossFitter who watches it, and if they see an athlete struggling through single unders - which to most of the public is a basic use of a jumprope - it kinda looks bad on the sport. Unbroken requirement should be limited to very high skill movements that most gym-goers - especially those who are not into CrossFit - can not do. Handstand walk and muscle ups are appropriate. That way it highlights the abilities of the athletes while testing appropriately.
@benchpress2006 ай бұрын
For sports in general, there's two main reasons to watch: either you play the sport yourself and can appreciate the technical difficulties/abilities of the athletes, or you care about the outcome like having a home team or favorite athlete to cheer for. That's why for me, as a powerlifter, I love watching all the barbell events in crossfit but I usually get bored and fast forward most of the other events.
@hillerfit7 ай бұрын
Another good video. On that first point. We would need to make the movements more challenging, or the athletes less fit.
@masonstartup14107 ай бұрын
Thanks! Idk the exact numbers, but for example, something like unbroken sets of 10 front squats #225, or 20 bar muscle ups in a workout. I really just think anything that is a large enough commitment to make the athletes think twice, or is big enough that some might even start too early and fail.
@djones32917 ай бұрын
@@masonstartup1410I think both those things would be a joke to a games level athlete (obviously depending on the volume and level of fatigue built up during the workout)
@Fikowski7 ай бұрын
@@masonstartup1410yes something like this could work! Let’s say you had a workout that was 4 rounds. 10 fs 225, 15 BMU. All must be unbroken. The reality is that workout would actually be very boring. Maybe 4 men would push the pace, do it all unbroken. Everyone else would be taking monstrously long breaks, knowing without the big breaks they’d be failing. So the leaderboard would likely reflect similarly if the workout didn’t have mandatory unbroken sections… but athletes 5-40 would just have slower times and even more time between finishing times? My prediction at least

Great video brotha! I also think of Jackie pro in 2022 with the set pace on the row that had to be hit. I think that’s some of the new style we got with Boz. Hopefully Dave doesn’t shut that kind of programming style down for the future
@laurentdoe14837 ай бұрын
All those points are absolutely valid and needed. As it is it’s way too predictable and it’s just a game or point management. The « unbroken rule » is an amazing way the competition more exciting to watch and more casual friendly. That being said I don’t want the games to become a reality TV show « survivor » like, there’s a very easy fix but we should be cautious about how far we can go with the wackiness.

Great video! The WODs you used as examples were all some of my favorite workouts and moments in the Games, but I didn't think about them in the way you broke it down. Let's hope that Boz is watching! I think part of the problem is they reduced the amount of workouts that could be won with superior skill over fitness. Which means fewer fun "home runs" like Cody's breakout performance in the MU Biathlon

another cool thing about elimination events at different stages is you have to be tactical about whether you go all in to make the cutoff but risk tiring yourself out for another event or if you try and skirt by but risk someone else sniping your position. A great format for something like this is an EMOM elimination, everyone does a lift every minute and they don't stop until there is one person remaining, while that person does win the event they also fry themself more than other people who just got a good enough score.

Something that I had thought about and that would fit towards your first point. Let's say you programm 10 Snatches at 225 in a longer metcon. Most, if not all would opt to do fast singles. But what if you say 10 Snatches@225 but the first rep of each set doesn't count? Do 2 touch and go reps and you get credit for one. Do 5 touch and go and you get 4. Do a single and fail the second? You get nowhere. The fastest way to finish is to do 11unbroken, but can you? You can also program something like 50 BMU in a similar style where the first 2 reps don't count. Maybe "Do 1 rep extra for every break" is an easier way to put this.
@jater106 ай бұрын
Unbroken requirement - Good to have, but not on basic movements like a single under - which to most non CrossFitters is a basic use of a jumprope. It makes the sport look bad when the elite athletes are struggling on something most consider basic. It should be used on high skill movements - like muscle ups or handstand walk. CrossFit HQ needs to consider how to make the Games more watchable to the non-CrossFitter. It is after a huge marketing event for CrossFit and the affiliates. Maybe incorporate some tests that are simple but relatable to most gym-goers. Besides the 1 rep maxing, add in some max reps strict pullups, or even the NFL combine bench press test.

What I think is more interesting is that the "Do or Die moments" haven't happened for the last couple of years. The formats have become quite monotonous and although the "duels" and elminiation style events are interesting, as a spectator it takes way too long to watch. The whole point of Crossfit is that these guys dont need the recovery time that everyone else does. My favourite example of this is Dubai's elimination event from last year. Bron and Ricky gamed it by going slower in the first couple of rounds to come out on top in the final because there was a much shorter rest overall. It made it significantly more dramatic and more engaging to watch as a spectator.
@joaopedrojesus32977 ай бұрын
The elimination style is very entertaining for sure, but has a problem for the athletes, which is the amount of work that the last ones do. The best way is to be the final workout, since it won't impact other events, but if you have multiples of those during the week, you can have athletes with much more work done than others.
@masonstartup14107 ай бұрын
I see what your saying, and this actually also applies amraps.
@AnDre-fj5lb7 ай бұрын
elimination style would be a problem because if the first wod is strenght focused, small athletes would be screwed, or viceversa if the first wod is more gymnastics, tall athletes would not make it. that's maybe why its divided by heats and not elimination also crossfit rewards the fittest athlete, not the smartest, so unbroken sets could reward smarter people

Athletes might not like this format because it's so damning. One hickup can screw you over big time. For entertainment value it will probably work really well. Though I do think the medium plays a big role. I didn't even watch the games when I did CF myself. But I thoroughly enjoyed some of the documentaries they did. They sucked you in, told a story, gave a glance both behind the scenes and on the stage. All the tedious bits were cut. And yeah, it followed the favourites around instead of the best. That's not very fair but that's life 🤷♂

Elimination is fine, but forcing a "unbroken" and "penalties" doesn't seem right to me, I don't think it was fair what happened with Froning or Fikowisk, only one RMU, only 1-1.5 meters!!?? What makes it very interesting to watch is understanding the strategy that the athlete is doing, what we have seen with Froning on the rope and that is a lot of emotion... was to watch how they set up their strategy... if they force the unbroken there will be no strategy, That's it, we'll know what they have to do and how... it won't be funny.
@jefferson.notaro7 ай бұрын
The other seven who arrived after Froning was penalized were no fitter than him. Froning would need a 3-second recovery and he would do it... Fikowisk the same, or less, 2 seconds... and he would be able to finish the course. .. well, that's my thought... elimination tests that are not based on unbroken or penalties... would be very good
