I think at that time Rip and CF were on good terms but later CF was on their way to become the CF we know today and Rip wanted nothing to do with that

the challenge with loading the fingers instead of the palm is (in my case) you may end up with an overuse injury to the ring finger causing tennis elbow.

Solution's using all your fingers, ultimately taking off a lot of load from the ring finger. I know it won't be comfortable first, so for practice, folks can first wrap band around the bar such that only index and middle finger would sit over it while grabbing the bar, then do the lift.
