Single handed sailing my Ranger 23 from Kauai to Oahu. I try out some fpv footage with one of my donated gopros and chest mount. It was a pretty wet passage going upwind the whole time. I got a slip for a couple days in Haleiwa harbor. @SamHolmesSailing

Been watching these since the crossing to Hawaii. I feel like I'm watching someone have the best times of their life, transformational experiences. The positivity is overwhelming, great stuff. 22yr old mech e student, hope to get out there someday myself. Keep the videos coming, I know I'm gonna keep watching 👍👍

Doesn't look easy to me. I've been sailing for a long distance before and he was having a semi-rough time here and there, I could tell, but he was relaxed about it so it was hard to perceive.

This channel is so much more enjoyable than most other sailing channels with big boats and all the gear on board at hand for litterally anything and everything. Sam is living the dream on a 23 footer and he dares to sail out there. A humble young guy that is so nice to watch his adventures without the big bla bla talk that most other channels have (especially Americans/Canadians). I had a 22 foot for 10 years which I sold last year and moved on to a 28 which I plan a big trip one day.

Lived in Hawaii from '68 to '72. My best friend's Dad had a 32 footer that we sailed from Haleiwa to Maui and Kauai many times. Just about the best fun I have ever had. Drank a lot of Primo beer....if it got rough, I puked a lot of Primo beer...rolled some pakalolo to kill the pain...oh, for the good ol' days. Enjoy it while you're young brother....it won't last forever. “The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.”

With yer Elan and technique, Not to mention "True Grit", you allow us into the cockpit in a way which allows us to live it thru you! And that is SO important!! YOU MAKE IT REAL fer the viewer! The guys in Haleiwa harbor will be fishermen, you should chat with them about catching fish to eatand maybe trade some labor for a rod and reel. You do not have any Yet? Ride that bike around on the weekends and hit the garage yard sales early! they have many. Maybe you can pick up some gear. You should be trolling two lines all the time. Have a boogie board yet?? Get one for surf riding, wont take up much room. Good luck, Cheering you on from 90274

When I lived on Oahu, Haleiwa is where we saw a giant sea turtle, way bigger than the beach ones normally seen. Best boogie boarding there too. Still have mine, can't part with it, like an ol' friend. I keep wanting a large cat like the Sailing Zatara crew has, but only crew is my brother and I so far. Take care Sam, I felt the sadness in your heart at leaving to go back to work. Sailing gets into a person's heart and seeing the world! Amazing adventure awaits. Lucy

@@samholmessailing you probably did, the route used to be sat- Honolulu harbor, Oahu Sun and Mon- kahului, Maui Tuesday- hilo, Hawaii Wednesday- Kona, Hawaii Thursday and Friday- Nawiliwili, Kauai, with a cruise past the Napali coast. As another commenter said it's the only Jones act compliant, American flagged large passenger cruise ship. I always thought it was interesting how much sediment the bow thrusters kicked up in Kauai, more than any other port we stopped at.

What is it like sailing a boat with the the main sheet block and traveler across the center of the cockpit? I wonder what the rationale for a design like that is. You must constantly be having to step over it when you need to leave the helm. The main sheet on most boats I've sailed on larger than dinghy size had the traveler and main sheet block and cleat in the stern behind the tiller. I guess with self-steering on the boat, it isn't as much of an issue because the gadgets are steering the boat for you.
