This song was part of the soundtrack of so many of our lives. I remember it like it was yesterday. The year it came out was the last year of my life that was dominated by the innocent optimism (that mostly the young possess), and a year that I will always remember fondly. Some wonderful, romantic times! I'm so glad they wrote this song and I am so glad I was at a point in my life when it mattered so much!

Eleven years ago, I told my girlfriend that this song would be the song that would play at my wedding. She laughed and said it was a horrible choice and that I better marry someone else if I really meant it. Five years ago, she became the victim of a violent crime. I married her later that year and we played it on our wedding day and every day we had to go to court to put her attacker behind bars. It became our anthem, our battle standard. The years since the trial have been difficult, this last one especially, but we always had this song to lift us up. Yesterday was our fifth anniversary (wood) and my wife gave me a plaque with the lyrics that's hanging over our mantle. I know Neil Finn will never read this, but God bless you because your song got us through some really really tough spots. "They come to build a wall between us but we know they won't win".

Not really sure why but I always come back to this song. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of the one true thing we all want and need in our lives and when we are privileged enough to share it must defend it as if it was our own country in need a freedom and complete existence.
