Cruella is a 2021 American crime comedy film based on the character Cruella de Vil from Dodie Smith's 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians. The film is directed by Craig Gillespie with a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, from a story by Aline Brosh McKenna, Kelly Marcel, and Steve Zissis. It is the third live-action adaptation in the 101 Dalmatians franchise and serves as a reboot and an origin story for the title character. Emma Stone stars as the title character, with Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Mark Strong in supporting roles. Set in London during the punk rock movement of the 1970s, the film revolves around Estella Miller, an aspiring fashion designer, as she explores the path that will lead her to become a notorious up-and-coming fashion designer known as Cruella de Vil.

Or a Coachman origin story where he find out he used to be a good boy until his father was killed as a result of actions from rambunctious boys. That’s why he hates “stupid little boys” and his father was also a donkey farmer so that’s his motivation for turning them into donkeys. 😂

I very much disagree, and I'm sorry if I'm sounding rough on you, it's not my intention. This doesn't play like Harley Quinn at all, nor did Stone deliver a performance reminiscent of any version of HQ I'd ever watched. You can watch both characters and enjoy them for their .. unique characteristics. Also, there is not a similar origin story for the two characters, the villains in their lives are different, the setting and locations are different, and I believe Cruella's sexual orientation is not discussed in this film at all. I don't know how on earth you were able to find a similarity between the two characters, even the half and half hair is different. Even if Disney really just wanted to compete with HQ by utilizing Cruella, they did a great job with making her stand out and not seem like a rip off of HQ (Not even close). You know who she reminded me of though? That Cruella De Vil character from their movie 101Ds. All joking a side, it actually gave me some DWP vibes, especially with Estella becoming a secretary for the villain. Oh, and Mark strong as well as the actors who played her "partners in crime" were pretty great. But hey, that's just me. You can feel differently and I definitely wouldn't dream of trying to change your mind.

@@oneearrabbit It’s her defining role in the original story. Sure she tried to do it once (if the sequels are disregarded) but I’d say wanting to skin 99 puppies for a coat is already insanely extreme and noteworthy as it is. Not to mention it was the thing everyone was interested to see how this movie would address and the answer feels like a cop out. It’s disappointing Disney tried attaching the Cruella name to this when they didn’t need to? They could’ve made her an original character, without the shadow of the original looming over, and it would’ve been better. But as it is, if feels like a captain hook origin movie that doesn’t explore his relationship to neverland or peter pan and is just some pirate movie.

I honestly don't get why people make fun of that line so much. I'm thinking that those who do have never felt the guilt that comes when you feel responsible for a loved one's death. You keep replaying your actions over and over in your mind wishing you'd done something different. The reason for your guilt may sound irrational to other people, but it sounds reasonable to you and it takes a while to get over. Having lost my mother and dealing with guilt over her death, that line is not funny.

Yeah, the fact that they felt the need to add a “twist” to her character was what truly turned me off from the film, even though I was having a ton of fun beforehand. It’s the not being the worst, but Disney just couldn’t resist in trying to add a quasi redemption to Cruella towards the end and that ended up hurting the character more. Just let villains be bad!

Disney has to learn we love the villains for being villains. You can make them sympathetic, give them backstories or even show them as good, but they need to be the villain we know and love by the ending. Otherwise, you'd be better off just making it an original character.

I actually agree with most of this. This movie legit felt like Devil Wears Prada heist film and was a lot of fun. It literally only just doesn’t work as a Cruella DeVill origin story. Even less so than Maleficent. Bc at least with that movie, we see almost everything that happened in the original film still happen, but for different reasons. And it just feels that the story was tweaked over the years. With this, I cannot see THIS Cruella turning around and wanting to murder dogs, no matter how much of a bitch to ppl she becomes. By the end, even after what happened to her mom, she doesn’t hate dogs. There’s like one line where she’s thinking about fur and it’s immediately dropped. And ofc the weirdest part [SPOILER] She’s gives Perdita and Pongo to Anita and Roger?? How the heck would she end up kidnapping them later? Regardless, like you I had fun and I did enjoy the twist of why she is the way she is. And Emma Stone was amazing. But again, would have worked better as a its own film rather than an origin story.

I like that her relationship with Jasper and Horace changes, but she realizes that they're still important to her. Her not killing the dalmatians personally doesn't ruin the movie for me, but I think they could've gotten away with her killing off the Baroness. Just to give her a more ruthless edge.

I don't see the ending as making her a hero or "misunderstood" like other movies centred on villains. She takes vengeance on the woman who killed her mother, steals everything she owns, and takes her place as fashion queen. That isn't really a hero thing. She even goes on to rename the house Hell House. Not something a hero would do. She does take down the bad guy, but she does it for completely selfish reasons and only because it will benefit her greatly. Compare this to Maleficent and Cruella could still be considered the bad guy.

I have to disagree completely on "mean for the sake of being mean" as she's given clear motivation almost halfway through the movie that (SPOILERS) She killed her mom. This is also a kind of origin story where we can see her BECOME the "Making dalmatians into a coat" villain. Again, Cruella was very cookie-cutter with almost nothing BUT room for improvement. How she became from this troubled child to the villain we all know. I actually really like this movie and that's coming from someone who overall despises these remakes. Edit: I do agree that the baroness being Cruellas real mom was 100% not needed. It changes nothing about the motivation or the conclusion.

I think the baroness being her mother gives her the character traits that make up her financial wealth and her cruel side. In the original story Cruella was an heiress which kind of goes hand in hand with thinking she can go out and murder puppies just because she wants a cute coat. Plus it shows there's a reason for her duel personality. She's half her father's daughter and half her mother's daughter. At least that's how I saw it. I only wish they explained the natural black and white hair.

I actually liked the ending of this movie. It felt fun, and poetic, and I liked the pay off. And I don’t really mind the subverted nature at the end. To me it felt like she had two sides: a mean jerky side that was natural and an understanding conversational teamwork side her mother tried to cultivate and she finally managed to pull the two together to avoid repeating the baroness’ mistakes.

I watched this with my best friend back when it came out and we absolutely adored it, her especially cause she's a film nerd. We also had a bit of trouble with the ending, but mostly from the unexplained gap from the end of the movie to "I'm going to kill dogs for a coat." But when we saw there was a Cruella 2 planned, that mostly simmered out. The rest of the ending we found perfectly enjoyable, if a bit flawed. Agreed that the baroness' dogs DEFFINITELY should've died though. Really put the Cruel in Cruella

...this is the first time I've considered seeing this. I refrained before because there couldn't possibly be any redeeming qualities to the character of Cruella DeVille and I fundamentally hated the idea of a movie that, from what I heard, seemed to be trying to do that. The idea of turning this terrible, irredeemably evil villain into some kind of "girl boss" character physically nauseated me. But if 2/3rds of the movie is definitely not trying to do that but is instead reveling in her awfulness in interesting ways (particularly against some other, also repugnant villain), I might be tempted to check it out, heh. The underdog-toppling-the-rich-elite story can perhaps, on some rare occasions, override the fact that the protagonist is a piece of you-know-what.

[SPOILERS] Okay so I don't get one thing, I understand the hate about the way the part on the cliff was solved (The skirt parachute was basically a 90's cartoon solution), but I don't see the "Oh, she turned into a hero at the end" angle. When the movie was done all I saw was that Cruella did care about Jasper and Horace a bit more than she did in the cartoon, but still mean spirited, selfish and greedy as always. I can see the "but she liked her dogs" thing can turn some people off, but just cause she had a few dogs doesn't mean that she liked ALL dogs, if anything I can see she getting the idea to make a coat after her dogs dying or something. Idk, just my take on it.

I can understand the dislike of the last third and yeah, the shoe-horning of 101 Dalmatians stuff into it was annoying, but unlike the other live action remakes, I really enjoyed this movie. It felt more like an AU of Cruella than a remake. The issue with the others is that they basically tried to make the same film again and just tweak one or two things, which usually ruined what made the original so good in the first place. This felt like it's own thing. And it helps that Cruella doesn't have as much story to go on from the original movie. She's a school friend of Anita, she loves furs, and she's willing to kill puppies. Not as much to go on, so not as much to screw up. My biggest issue with Maleficent is that they took the "Mistress of All Evil" and made her, if not outright good, then just not evil. Of the remakes, this is definitely one of the best.

Even though they made her more likeable, they also didn't completely change her character. I really wish and hope that the later Disney Remakes will be just as good or better. ( Honestly I doubt it )

God, I wanted to like this movie so much. Hell, I'm a fan of these Disney reimaginings! And there's so much in here that is great. Emma Stone is the PERFECT choice to play Cruella DeVille in today's age. The two henchmen are fantastic. And if this movie doesn't get an Oscar nomination for Costume Design, I'm going to be pissed. But... the ending did ruin the film for me. Aside from that trashy opening where her hair is born black and white and "Cruella" is supposed to be the mean side of her (wtf?), the film almost had me. But... this really is nothing like Cruella DeVille. The main problem being she likes dogs. That is such a betrayal of the core identity of this character and her whole motivations for everything. While people try telling me that "this is an origin story", that still doesn't work. When you see where she is at the end of this movie, there is no indication she will become the puppy-killing psychopath we've come to know, and even if they do that in the sequel, it STILL wouldn't work, because now that goes against whatever this character is supposed to be! The sequel is forever doomed! No matter what they do, it's not going to work! They butchered this character too much at this point.
@Miyanoai14

Was there plans for a sequel? I kind of hope not. This movie relies a lot on surprises that wouldn’t work again. I think it’s fine as a stand-alone. I absolutely had fun with this movie and the ending doesn’t ruin the movie itself for me but you are absolutely right. It doesn’t work as an origin story for Cruella. It should have been an original movie.

@@Miyanoai14 It can't really be an original movie, because a lot of elements are already synonymous with Cruella DeVille: dalmations, fashion, black & white hair, England. If they made this an original movie, it would have just been called a ripoff of Cruella DeVille. Again, damned if you do, damned if you don't. It's too close to Cruella DeVille to be original, but it's too far removed to be a good adaptation of the character.

I don't think you should consider this movie a prequel to 101 Dalmatians, it's more of an alternative universe. Also, the hole thing about Cruella having black and white hair is a real thing called "poliosis" a disease that causes a decrease or absence of melanin in hair.

The simple fact is, this movie, brilliant as it is, is NOT a prequel to 101 Dalmatians. Leaving out the obvious reasons with Anita (including that she and Cruella are supposed to be HIGH SCHOOL old friends, not Elementary), Cruella in 101 Dalmatians had no interest or real clue who Rodger was as a person and he himself was clearly the same from his dialogue, so it wouldn't make any sense that they're one in the same people. If Rodger really did blame Cruella for getting him fired, he would've had distain for her at that introduction scene in 101 Dalmatians instead of simple interest. Then there's Horace and Jasper. They are WAY too competent to be the same Horace and Jasper that easily get outsmarted by a bunch of puppies multiple times. Not to mention, along with that it would literally make no sense why Cruella would give Rodger and Anita Pongo and Perdita just to turn around and want to turn their puppies into a coat, unless she went out and bought those puppies herself, since she only had 3 adult Dalmatians, that would mean Pongo and Perdita are from the same litter, so brother and sister, which would mean the 15 puppies we've all known and loved for over 2 decades, are the product of incest. So, clearly, this movie is not a prequel but at What If universe.

For me the title is the problem, if this movie were called "Noire Fashionista" it would be nice, but IS called cruella, we must expect to see cruella, not some tiny mischief, she suppose to be the one enjoying murdering puppies and add 3 more on the list only because the style demands a hat! But now Disney is too afraid to do good evil villains

I think a lot of people miss the point that because this is a Disney movie made to make children like and sympathize with a character. So it comes with the tropes of softening up the villain and making them more anti hero esque. Any movie that portrays the villain in a positive light but still keeps them as a really dastardly person is usually much more adult focused with darker themes that probably wouldn't be child friendly. Otherwise you run the risk of basically telling kids, it's okay to be bad and kill puppies, go forth and do so.

I'm not going to repeat any criticism that I said in previous videos about this movie, but I will say this: Anyone who thinks Cruella is no more distasteful than Wicked has clearly never watched Wizard of Oz. The Wicked Witch is arguably a victim in that movie since she only wants the slippers Dorothy took from her dead sister and, until Dorothy is sent on a quest to kill her, the only cruel thing she does is terrify the Munchkins. It made sense for the Wicked Witch to get her own sympathetic story since, despite the label (might've been called that for propagandic purposes), she was morally ambiguous in the first place. Cruella on the other hand is established as a greedy, narcissistic dog murderer from the very first minute of 101 Dalmations. There is nothing sympathetic or redeemable you could get out of her character. She's evil incarnate. Her name is a combination of "cruel" and "devil". Ironically, the Devil himself manages to work as a sympathetic character in Paradise Lost because there was always the implication in the Bible that he was cursed to be the antithesis of G-d and didn't want to hurt anyone for the sake of it. But imagine if Donald Trump got a biopic that presented him as misunderstood. Would you be for it? A story about a man who has been a spoiled, selfish prick since childhood? Who has never been 1% likeable or had one redeeming quality? That's the problem with the Cruella movie.
