My problem with the movie was it felt like there were several scripts and none of them were fully realized so they just mushed them all together. One of the antagonists could have been completely written out of the script and would have had no choice impact on the story.
@boomstickcritique9023 ай бұрын
It could have been streamlined that is true at the same time everything in the film itself was there to prop up the fun and zany antics. The first film had the milk toast couple to ground the flick. With part 2 by focusing more directly on Beetlejuice and Lydia it becomes more comedic and over the top inherently so all the sub plots were pretty much there just to enhance the fun quailty of the movie. When it comes to comedies for me plot is secondary it's more about entertainment value for comedies with me. I was having a good to great time with the comedy and Beetlejuice antics in the flick so I didn't care much about some of the plots not going that far. The only one I would say cut would be the Beetlejuice x wife thing it wasn't needed that I agree with. But overall I was having a blast nearly most of the film. I don't think either Beetlejuice has or had a great developed plot most of the stuff in the first comes out of nowhere and isn't even explained.

The complaint that some people have about the characters in this movie being very one note and “two dimensional” baffles me because don’t people realize that’s the case for almost ALL of Tim Burton’s films? Almost every film that Tim Burton had his hand in, whether it be Nightmare Before Christmas or Alice in Wonderland has intentionally flat characters or characters with only one or two defining traits because his type of storytelling is based around the environment in which the characters live in rather than the characters themselves sort’ve like a fairy tale (which is why films like Edward Scissorhands and Nightmare work so well), the characters in Burton’s films are suppose to be relatively simple so that the set designs can catch your eye more and tell the story rather than the characters telling the story. It’s why Batman was a perfect fit for Burton because while Batman and Joker are technically complex characters, their motives are very simple when you get down to it and it’s how they interact with their environment and each other that makes them interesting rather than the characters themselves. Of course, this style of storytelling doesn’t work in all of Timothy’s films but I’m still surprised people are using simple characters as a point of criticism when it’s been a factor in the majority of Burton’s career as a director, even Doug is guilty of this in his Mars Attacks review even though the entire point of that movie is that the most interesting aspect is the aliens, not the humans XD

My dad loved "Drop Dead Fred" because he thought that Gremlins girl that was in it was hot, so he used to make me rewatch it with him all the time when I was a kid. ugh. To be fair, I don't think "Drop Dead Fred" is that bad of a film, as I can definitely see what they were trying to do with that movie. The problem is that it doesn't work. For the subject matter that it's trying to tackle about abuse and toxic relationships, it doesn't work because the obnoxious childish humor of the movie itself seems to undermine it a lot. I think that film would've worked better had the moral been more or less about how it's okay to still have fun, even if you're an adult; similar to the moral that "Hook" had back in the day. But nope, they don't. Maybe, I could only be saying this because I was forced to watch "Drop Dead Fred" so many times as a kid that I had to find ANY excuse to like it enough to get through it without being bored out of my mind, but I don't think it was that bad. It's passable, but it's forgettable.

I agree with most of this review but Doug missed the very obvious reason why Beetlejuice is still after Lydia: he’s in love with her. Almost everything he does in the movie is because he has a massive all consuming crush on her! Beetlejuice is still creepy in this but he’s a lot more heroic and kind of a romantic in this (yes the baby scene was weird but I don’t think he actually impregnated her it was more like a weird silly practical joke/illusion that beetlejuice just did to because he thought it was funny.)

In the original, he only wanted to marry Lydia just so he could be free to roam about the living world to cause chaos, but he did seem genuinely surprised when he heard Lydia wanted to be dead and even said they’d talk about it which showed he cared. I always thought in the sequel he’d want revenge on her for foiling the wedding, but instead, he still holds a torch for her and the sequel he wanted to marry her again not just cuz he still loves her, but to escape from his ex-wife (and for good reason). I think he likes that he’s found his match to outsmart him in his chaos and unfortunately the feeling isn’t mutual with Lydia and we’re gonna have to see if there is a third movie to wrap up the whole thing

As a person who has never seen the original Beetlejuice, I will say, this movie seems a little flat. Just looking at the original Bettlejuice poster, it looks like so much fun. But the second one didn’t really capture me as much. The practical effects were amazing, the acting was superb, but the story didn’t have real steaks. I mean, the daughter plot line felt forced and added on the last minute and like she wasn’t given the focus she should have.
@sapphire72883 ай бұрын
I enjoyed it enough but I think the first one was much simpler and ended more satisfyingly. The sequel has similar energy but it was bogged down by multiple plots that were added in to tie in every character's motive and it felt underdeveloped. Beetlejuice's ex-wife was built up to be horrifying (loved her intro) but she was mostly terrorizing things somewhere and when she finally met the main cast, she was 'killed off' in such a 'oh I guess she wasn't that terrifying after all' way. In fact she doesn't need to be in the story since Beetlejuice still wanna marry Lydia out of his own selfish reason anyway. The ghost boy felt more like an actual villain. I understand not all movies need to be intricately written to be enjoyable but this is exactly why I felt they should have remove some of the characters in this sequel to have a better focus. I mean, they had 4 villains in it, (Delores, Jeremy, Rory and Beetlejuice himself) that's a bit too many.

I feel like a lot of y'all didnt see the Beetlejuice cartoon. Because the energy is really reminiscent of the animated universe. I was surprised they didn't actually call it the Neitherworld, tbh. Also... the line about Lydia's mom being alive, seems to be intentional to debunk the musical version, which it is said that Tim Burton is NOT a fan of. ALSO ALSO, Beej is still "after" Lydia because he loves her. Tim knows it, Winona knows it, Keaton knows it... Lyds knows it, Beej knows it... we know it LOL.

@@myaedelman It's conjecture, really. He hasn't outright said he dislikes the musical, but when he was interviewed and the interviewer mention the musical he had an incredibly visceral reaction. My assumption, and it is only that, is that the characters as portrayed in the musical don't adhere to the personalities as Burton and visioned and directed them to be. The musical had characters and storyline loosely based on Burton's original film, but there were significant changes And I think Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is Burton's pushback to that..
