Kung-Fu Panda also came out the same year, and Jack Black was basically only known for House of Rock. This was before Interstellar, so Matthew McConaughey was really only known for Sahara and other smaller films like Contact. Bill Hader was only known to people familiar with SNL, but even then, this was before his (arguably) most popular sketch, The Californians. With exception to Tom Cruise, Ben Stiller was probably the most famous actor at the time of this movie's release. Tom Cruise was actually approached to play the lead, but he was too busy during the early production so the main lead role went to the director Ben Stiller. Tom did read the script however and suggested they add the character of Les Grossman to add more tension to the film. Later on, Cruise was able to free some time up on his schedule and at that point, the only character who wasnt cast was Les Grossman. So Cruise happily took the role.
