Hey, Crystal. First, this IS long! Please don't feel obligated to match me word for word, or even word for every twentieth word, lol. Just me blabbin'! Been straying from YT for other compelling diversions out there, but am gladly back catching up now! Been digging some of your recent "lessons" on diminishment, dissonance, minors, majors, piano notes as rain droplets, the sublimity of that "pocket symphony" called "Good Vibrations," the wonders of "Simply Nourish," etc. ;) And yes, "playing chess" with Zeppelin is fraught: Most will fail. Even my favorite player, Mikhail "The Magician From Riga" Tal, known for his "daring combinatorial style...improvisation, and unpredictability," might lose his king to the surprise attacks of Sides 3&4 found on your next Zep album, Physical Graffiti. This double-album masterpiece is usually my favorite of theirs, but check back on Tuesday, heh. From the acoustic "Bron-Yr-Aur," which one would be forgiven for mistaking for a babbling brook in Heaven itself, to the hellhound wailings of "The Wanton Song," it's got diversity in spades! And clubs, hearts, diamonds. I believe vocalist Robert Plant wrote the words of Track #7, "In the Light," to comfort two friends in a time of grief: I know you've suffered such woe somewhat recently, and even (I think, anyway) some physical discomforts as well. I'm sure many here will therefore join me in "dedicating" that one to you. Altho, being Zeppelin, the song's "healing" message is accompanied by a riff that has been described as "so nasty it would make a pole dancer blush," LOL. Hey, Zep's gonna Zep, right? I'm not sleeping on the work you just did on HOTH; it was your usual eloquent insight, and my random "Cool!" moment I'll choose is how you described the outro of "Over the Hills..." But I've taken enuf space here. Tho I will take a bit more and just say Sides 1&2 (and hey, you may think the album sucks, lol! Totally cool, no pressure of course, still interested in your thoughts!) of PG have some of the bone-crunchingest, stone-funkiest hard rock ever offered human ears. "Kashmir" is the album's big hit, and deservedly so, but three songs before it, and just after the groovtastic "The Rover,", is "In My Time of Dying," the song of theirs I've prolly listened to the most. It's a freight train--starts out slow, bloozy, almost hypnotic, even forbidding, then gathers speed and becomes urgent, fiery, Hell on wheels. But it ain't goin' THERE. It's based on a Gospel tune by Mississippi bluesman Blind Willie Johnson, and it's a rock and roll spiritual ride heading for the Great Beyond, with Jimmy the Engineer pushing the limits, John Paul Jones keeping the chug-a-chug steady, Robert the Train Whistle pleading to St. Peter and Gabriel to open up the Gates, all while hauling Bonzo-grade Thunder. (Bonzo's their -- peerless -- drummer, heh). O my Jesus! (You'll see why I said that, lol, and be sure to listen for the studio chatter at the end, as right after they play the last note, the guys are satisfied with the take, like: "Well, THAT's the one, isn't it?") OK, I've geeked out enuf. On to check out your reaction to Sabbath's "Paranoid," w00t!)

@@CrystalMarieShannon What, like 75 words in your reply? That's IT? Did you see how many words **I** wrote? LOL, I'M KIDDING, Crystal, haha! THANKS for the kind words! Poking fun at my longwinded self, and I DID "instruct" you to not feel obligated to respond to all my many points. I also realize most folks don't seem to reply to your "TY's" except for a thumbs up, but I'm doing so here because you mentioned YT not notifying you of the comment. There's another Super Thanks I recently made here kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaSzooOPYrGBppI on your Stones review. I figured you'd get around to both of these at some point, but since you mentioned that notification glitch happening, I thought I'd bring it to your attention. Yeah, I love me some PhysGraf, and I hope we fans haven't hyped it too much, lol. I mean it IS great, but so, imo, are all their albums. It's like da Vinci's "Last Supper" is transcendent, sure, but he also had those other masterpieces. Finally, it IS "just" rock music, in any case, and Jimmy Page himself has gladly admitted that Classical is a much more impressive musical art form than rock. Having said that: rock on!

I knew you would love side 2. Side 1 is great but side 2 is ridiculous. LZ at their peak. D'yer Mak'er is actually pronounced like "Jamaica." It's basically an English accent quickly saying "did ya make her?" People have been saying it wrong forever, so don't feel bad lol. The Ocean refers to the sea of people that Plant is singing to at their huge concerts. Great reaction as always! Can't wait to see you react to their next album, Physical Graffiti which I think is their best.

I heard the title of D'yer Mak'er came from an English joke where two friends are talking: My wife just went on holiday. D'yer Mak'er? (which sounds either like Jamaica or "did you make her" in an English accent) No, she went on her own accord. Everything preceding Physical Graffiti is amazing but PG is the zenith. The variety and creativity on that album is next level.

AND "Houses of the Holy" is, I'm pretty sure, a reference to the actual concert halls Zep played in. "Holy" though, as a reference to the fans, much less the band itself, may be putting it pretty charitably. This WAS the mid-70's in America, lol!

@johncampbell756 Жыл бұрын
D'yer Mak'er which more or less intentionally sounds like two things "Did ya make her?" With an accent. AKA, did you hookbup? The other is Jamaica. The Rock has actual rock connections. His wife's late father was the drummer for Boston. He named her sister Aja, after the spectacular album & song by Steely Dan. No Quarter is much better live. Tool did a great cover. That's John Bonham at the beginning of The Ocean, thus was take 5. "We've done four already but now we're steady, and then they print."

Crystal, while I was listening to this I had an epiphany. I love this album and your reactions to it, but I saw the future. I see you doing Badfinger and their first album “Magic Christian Music” and totally digging it. Then, diving into their later albums. There’s also a Beatles connection. For years I used to say “Die Yer Maker” until someone who was an even bigger Led Zeppelin fan than I was pointed out the title was an homage to reggae called “Jer Maker” a la Jamaica. That one still gets a lot of airplay on classic rock radio. Love it. Love you. 🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏

Wonderful insightful articulate entertaining reaction by a beautiful woman. What’s not to love? HOTH has a very “ Summertime” feel to it and the overall sound is very very different to LZ4 ( which is extremely “ Autumnal” in its ambience. The exception on HOTH is of course “ No Quarter”, which sounds perfect on a foggy or snowy winters dusk / sunset ( although some people find it somewhat disturbing and uncomfortable to listen to alone), by candlelight. With 92% of the other reactors out there, I'd tend to agree with you about her pausing frequency. But she has more interesting observations and better spontaneous critiques of music during one or two of those pauses than most reactors have for an entire album side.
