Thanks for a very detailed explanation of the C5 Z06…I have a 2002 that I bought new in January 2002. Millennium yellow with modified torch red interior. I have done everything with this car. Terrific long road trip car first trip 3300 miles in 10 days 30 mpg awesome, auto cross, I have run it at New England Dragway. I promised my self I would push the car drive it hard to enjoy it. I have had other Corvettes that sat around a lot there was alway some issue…Not this one…So reliable, still pristine…like the car I’m 20 years older…these days it draws a lot of attention at the Cars and Coffee events…it’s such a special Corvette…I smile every time I walk in the garage…thanks again.

Have owned several corvettes in my lifetime and raced a 71LT1 in the late 70's and early 80's but the only new one I have ever owned is my 2001 Z06 and it is the best overall Corvette I have ever owned. Buy one, buy a Helmut, put a number on the door and go racing. The car is unbelievable and handles and drives like a Corvette should. Have only 68k on mine but have been through 3 sets of tires. No issues but did put a Billy Boat bullet exhaust on it, changed the air system and would like to have headers on it, but am still in love with car. Best bang for the buck out there and would highly recommend.

Owned our '04 Commemorative Edition Z06 since 2006. It had 2K when new to us. Now 70K on the ticker. Loved every mile. Car is scary bad fast. At +/- 3200 Lb it's a beast. Also worth noting, we dyno'ed the car and GM seriously under-rated HP. Our motor is stock, with only a K&N replacement air filter. Her Rear Wheel HP was in the 380 range... If rear wheel data is only 85% of Flywheel (Standard assumption) then the GM rated 405 HP is underestimated by maybe more than 30... Always felt like it to me...
@Joey8567213 жыл бұрын
So that means like 437 crank hp?
@Carguylogan2 жыл бұрын
They are 3100 lbs. And if yours is bone stock except the air filter then that 380 reading was inflated. I think the highest stock or intake-only hp from a C5Z that was reproduceable on other dynos was 368 or 370. 380 is usually what you'll get from a 02-04 car with intake, long tubes, X pipe and tune.

All in all, car is great but was a pain getting/finding tires for it (had original 2001 tires) and right now, I need to replace the flasher as it's gone bad, not a fun job but doable. Total price was around 17k, had a guy offer me 23k last week for it.

I acquired an '03 Z06 in 2007 and sold it to my son 8 years later. Loved the visceral nature of the car, and to illustrate the point, I purchased an '06 Z06 in 2009, with the intent being to upgrade, but decided to sell the '06 instead (and keep the '03) because the C6 was bland by comparison (used the proceeds of the sale to buy a Cayman S). Note that when they bumped up the horsepower in 2002, it chopped another 3/10 of a second off of the 0-60 and quarter mile times, suggesting a 40 hp increase over the 385 hp 2001's (the magazines all had the '02's pegged at 425 as well).

@nunyabusiness8962 жыл бұрын
Shhh, don't tell anyone you can just put Z06 rims on a normal or especially Z51 C5 and gain most of the worthwhile advantages of a Z06 including a much better 0-60 time. 50hp isn't that big of a deal at this level (esp. considering if you compare dynos it's actually only like 25 more whp and only in the last couple thousand RPM, so you'll only see it on a highway pull or long straight) and the FRC was just as light from 99 and 00. Definitely agree runflats are trash and you should just invest in a good tow plan (or budget for a tow at some point), but you don't need to spend the $5-10k premium people want for Z06's when just some good tires on a normal Vette will have you 98% of the way there with a better ride in the real world and fewer Z06-only parts that are a pain to find. Oh, and the valve springs don't drop valves in the engine on the normal C5.
@csvette2 жыл бұрын
A lot of what you say here is 100% truth. The differences between the base C5 and the Z06 are less than GM would admit to. I will say that the tighter tranny ratios and the shot-peined differential in the Z do handle abuse better than the stock C5 units and it does get around a track much more effciently than the base C5. BUT....how many people are actually going to do that with the car? Not a whole lot. Get sticky, non-runflat tires....add in C6 Z06 shocks and a CAGS eliminator and you are well on your way to world-class performance for 60-70% of the price of the Z. Lyle

Hi Lyle Love your videos on the various Corvette C5 subjects. Looking for a C5 Z06 Corvette to buy however I´ve got a question regarding the suspension on the Z06. Do they all (2001-2002) come with the FE4 suspension ? Or do they use the F55 suspension from 2003?
@csvette Жыл бұрын
The C5 Z06 NEVER came with the F55 suspension. That wasn't available on any Z06 until 2011 when it was included in the Z07 option. :) Lyle

Hey, I’ve been watching your channel for a while and now I’m pretty hooked on corvettes. I’ve been looking at a automatic 08 corvette for 28k and 33,000 miles (clean CARFAX). When I test drove it, it was kind of hard to switch from park to drive. And when I would step off the break it would squeak a little. Do you think this is worth it? And how many miles until the car starts having serious problems? Thank you for all your videos on this beautiful Amazing car.

I appreciate your channel and the information you provide. I am looking for a C5 Z06 and I've been looking for one for a while but the prices are skyrocketing now lol. I found an '01 w/ 28,000 miles for 27,500 at a dealer. Seems a bit high but it seems rare, 1 of 95 yellow with torch red interior. My problem is now these are approaching C6 Z06 catagory pricing. You cannot find a C5 under $22,000 regardless of mileage, etc. I've seen decent C6 Z06 cars for around $33-35,000.

Hello Lyle. I am looking at a couple of 2002 Ct Base models. They look the same other than one has a body lines down the sides, about the middle of the doors. The other one has the regular Vette indentation without the body line in the middle? But they are both Base models. I don't understand why this is? Also the one without that body line in the middle of the door has a body colt strip down the center of the back hatch window. The one that does have the body lines down the sides, doesn't have the body color strip down the back hatch window? Do you know what the difference is? Thanks.
@csvette9 ай бұрын
Hi Josh! The strips on the doors were optional door-ding guards from the factory. They can be added or removed from any C5 easily, as they are held on with double-faced tape. The stripe on the rear glass is aftermarket adornment and was never on the cars when new. Also easily added or removed, as you like. Lyle :)

@@csvette Okay. Thanks. I kind of like the look without the door strips. I think it looks smooth and sleek. That's the one I feel drawn too. Thanks for letting me know. :)

Check out my C5 buyers guide video--it has most of the best info I have on the subject. Look at balancer, tires and look at fluids (brake, clutch, coolant) to see if they are cloudy or smell bad. Listen for what would sound like exhaust rattle--could be a torque tube getting ready to go. Lyle

@csvette2 жыл бұрын
03-04 is going to be the sweet spot, as some '02's still had the lingering valve spring issues. That said, it is an easy thing to fix, so '02 is still an excellent choice. NO Z06 ever had magnetic ride suspension in the C5 run, so you are safe there! Lyle :)

With over 100k on the car, you don't have to worry about collectors...it is a great car, but collectors want sub 10000k cars. Feel free to explore your options and do whatever makes the car more of what you want. :) Lyle

I just got a 2003 Z06 and I've read people say you have to replace the valve springs before they break to prevent a catastrophic engine failure. Have yours replaced yet? What do you suggest?
@csvette3 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge, that was largely a 2001 and 2002 problem. I am pretty sure that the valve springs were fixed by '03. My 03 has 249K miles on it, and has never had them done. Lyle
@darrylsjodin39623 жыл бұрын
@@csvette Thank-you for the reply. Mine has 70,000 miles. The guy from Beezy builds channel said his is a 2003 and had the yellow valve springs that could break and he replaced his. Mine is a later 2003, according to the Vin, so Mine might be the new blue springs, as yours might be. I don't drive it hard, so hopefully won't be a problem. I guess I could pull a valve cover and see what color they are!
@Carguylogan2 жыл бұрын
@@csvette It is a 2002 and early 2003 problem. 2001 and 2004 were both equally low in valve spring occurrences. Remember- 2001 had a smaller cam. When they upgraded the cam for 2002 they upgraded the valve springs along with it, and that's where the problem started.

I have a black 03 Z06 as well and I was wondering how long I can I can expect the clutch to last? It had 70,000 on it when I got it last year and it now has 73,000. It makes a little shhhhh sound in 1st gear. Also, I just replaced the left front wheel bearing that was noisy and rough. Thanks
@csvette2 жыл бұрын
You are probably about due for a clutch. Most C5's don't make it to 100000 miles before needing a clutch and wheel bearings. I would suggest doing the other 3 bearings soon and rebuilding the torque tube and changing out the rear main seal when you do your clutch, as well. Lyle

Great video! Question, do you think its really worth going for 02 over the 01 based just on the 20 extra HP? Although I do like the removable tops thinking I'm leaning towards a Z06 over the base coupe. Keep up the videos, really enjoy your channel.
@AimForTheBushes9083 жыл бұрын
Not if the price is a huge jump. If you plan to keep it and modify it then those extra few hp won't been anything down the road.
@Carguylogan2 жыл бұрын
FYI the actual power output of these cars is all over the place for all 4 years. Plenty of 02 - 04 cars make 330-340 stock, and I've seen multiple accounts of stock 01 cars making in the 360s. My own 2001 made 352 whp SAE with max smoothing (the lowest reading settings on a dynojet) bone stock on a dyno I trust. I've never seen any car read high on that dyno. C6Z made 420 whp, 335i FBO on E40 made 340 whp. Thats lower than the commonly accepted numbers for those cars by 20-30 hp so I know the dyno doesn't read high and still my stock 01 made 352 which is right on the money for a 405 hp rating.

The 01 and 02-04 have different cam, and springs. The 02-04 if left stock has more tuning potential than the stock 01. If you want more than just a tune and price is a huge difference just get the 01. The 02-04 did get a carbon fiber hood and also the HUD I believe. The 01 didn’t
