INTP w/ISTP son. Being ISTP is hard for him. He has the heart and soul of the ISTP, but physical disabilities make his Se wonky. He literally has two non-dominant hands, so everything using fine motor skills is doubly challenging to him. He is currently working towards a welding certificate, and often comes home criticizing himself because he cannot master a weld fast enough. I have always marveled at him. Even when he was a small child he noticed the oddest things, like the hubcaps on all the local cop cars. He could identify which officer we passed just by looking at their hubcaps. Seriously, Who notices that? And he has always had the quirkiest assortment of facts in his head. Even though he has had a rough time socially and physically, he is pretty awesome, and just becoming more awesome as he steps into adulthood.

Children are inherently emotional and illogical....they would be constant irritants to the ISTP soul. She expected us to figure out things for ourselves, though she would step in when our adventures threatened true harm. She was a nurse, so I think her Fe (caring for other’s emotional state) was burned out after her 12 hour hospital shift. She did love music and singing, so she communicated her feelings through that and vicariously taught us to do the same! Though I still wish she could have been what I needed, Personality Typing has helped me to heal my hurt about her behavior and replaced it with understanding.

As for winning them over with stats- the ISTP in my life is the "exception to all statistics". He has to try it for himself before he believes it, and he'll do it if and when he feels like it. As a Te user I'm the one who ends up adopting his thinking :p I love how we got each other's backs as our greatest strength is the other's blind spot.

Holy hell, you just described my husband to the letter. He’s an ISTP, and he’s a jeweler and a martial artist. I’m an INFP, and in spite of what some might think, we work well. It’s mostly because-you guessed it-I tell him he he loved and valued. We balance each other’s more stubborn tendencies; he keeps my head from floating too far into the clouds, and I keep his mind open to new experiences (and protect him from shysters! 😂). He also DEFINITELY wears the proverbial pants in our marriage, in most ways (essssspecially the bedroom, whew!), and…I like it. He makes me feel protected and taken care of, and I need that sort of stolid reassurance, because INFPs are babey and smol. 🥺 I love being his wife, even when he’s being a giant pain in the ass. 😂

What you said about memory is so true. I've always been a little confused by it. Certain things I seriously will never forget. Ever. Other things just leave. I think it all depends on what matters to me. It's like I have an incredible cataloguing system and if i want to store it, I do. If not, I don't. But I can memorize things well. My last gf was always amazed how much I remembered from previous conversations. She always told me my memory was incredible. I really do remember specific things said. My mind has a way of linking everything and and as a result I can retrieve it quickly and accurately.

Writing to maybe help you further your already decent understanding of ISTP's (points will be sporadic as I remember them, and I wrote this somewhat to work through some thoughts so ignore if you want): Not all ISTP's hate theorizing or thinking about the what-ifs, I do it all the time--to an extent. Also, I'm very cognizant of emotional manipulation but still have to remain aware of the weaknesses you pointed out. Sometimes, however rarely, I can get so focused on getting something done that others’ intentions get overlooked. Definitely right on the harsh mentor front because I get very frustrated and lose respect for someone if they do not at least attempt to get better when I'm instructing them, and I do get satisfaction when they are successful--however I suspect most people would. Overall though, I try to avoid ultimatums when judging people. If I try to teach someone something and I can tell they're not feeling it and are honest to me about not wanting to do it, I don’t think less of them. On the other side, if they constantly rely on me for things like tech support when I'm not an IT guy for things they should strive to understand because of their frequent need for help in that area, that leaves a lasting negative impression which makes me a little angry when they eventually ask for help again. The tactics vs strategy point is also right on the mark. Though I could work to become better at strategy like anyone else, quick tactics comes much easier. Over-planning can easily be thwarted by misinterpreting one link in the chain of cause and effect. To me, you might be a bit overplaying the arrogance and insecurity of ISTP's but it's hard to argue with your personal experiences and everyone being different, and I definitely saw similar insecurities when I was younger. Also the memory thing is definitely on point, I can memorize things in academia that have practical application or logical roots, but memorizing other people's thoughts or theories on things sometimes only serves to muddy the clear logical waters I try to maintain of my already erratic thought pattern. On the thinking that we assume others are stupid... I don’t like that interpretation because it makes us sound super stuck-up and hard to get along with. I actively try to be approachable and benevolent toward the vast majority of people. I plan for when people do things they shouldn't--I account for brain farts and am usually able to predict when they're likely to happen hence my career in law enforcement. Very much try to stay away from harsh judgement because I sometimes make bonehead mistakes and I certainly wouldn't want someone judging my entire person for that one instance. Again, touching on an earlier point, I do not often like to place ultimatums on another human's worth unless they do something that shows a deeper issue that could not be easily fixed and especially not by me. Short-fused know-it-alls (whose personalities that are consumed by that behavior) and even psychopaths have very little to no personal worth to me but must be treated impartially due to my occupation. Honest and genuine people have the most worth to me especially if they're receptive to bettering themselves. Your video helped me understand myself a little better (not putting TOO much stock in MBTI but just taking what makes sense), so I thought I'd add my personal experience to the pool if it helps you or anyone else. This was therapeutic to think through, but I apologize if it comes out as babbling, just felt like writing for some reason! PS my best friend happens to be an ISTJ. Thanks for the video.

I’d argue that the present thinking is overrated. I often find that while I value the present, I heavily focus on the future and what could happen. This is mainly because I want to maintain a free state for the future. In other words, the present focus, for me at least, is with respect to the future. It is a forward thought process that isn’t as direct as others. This ‘present think’ sometimes gives us a wrap of being big spenders, but I find the contrary. I am frugal and try and live without debt for the sole reason of having freedom and flexibility.

I'm an INFP raised by an ESTJ single parent. And I think that I've been emulating ISTP for my entire life. A lot of the ISTP traits you discuss in this lecture hit home for me. When I work, I'm very movement oriented, it pisses me off when other people are acting or being stupid, etc. If this is true, and I'm emulating ISTP so much, this explains why I'm so mentally drained all the time. And this happens automatically for me, I don't even think about it. What the hell is wrong with me, man...

10:50 this speaks to me in so many levels... one of my proudest moments in my early life was being a side-teacher for English class for one of my fellow friends while at highschool. The teacher knew I was fluent enough that I could barely learn anything from the classes, so she let me be my friend's personal teacher. My friend was a typical 16-year old Spaniard from the 90s: "jelou, whachunaime" type, making incredibly difficult for him to advance this class. He ended up getting like 6.5 at the end of the year, and, most important of it all, he believed he kind of "got" English. I wouldn't agree completely on not listening to other people's opinions though unless providing lots of data: I personally don't need someone to quote me half a dozen papers (though it's greatly appreciated), but at least a hypothesis or opinion shouldn't have blatant flaws sustaining it. People very often generalize points about very particular issues, while ignoring key elements that can affect that issue, or make it an invalid option. As long as someone's reasoning fits reality, even if it's far fetched or assumes data we cannot measure to that degree, I'm ok with that.

INFP married to an ISTP. Whenever we’d have a fight my hubby would give me “the silent treatment”. He always said it was his secret weapon. But HA! Once I discovered he was trying to manipulate me it didn’t bother me anymore. Well it did but I wasn’t going to show it! Lol. This was in our early days. He doesn’t do that anymore at least not consciously anyway. We’ve had a tumultuous marriage early on but he “found Jesus” and lost some testosterone (LOL) and we have very good marriage now. Not perfect but I’ve matured and realize now that’s an impossible expectation! Your video is pretty spot on for him and very helpful. I like your points: Always ask him what he thinks, allow him to make you comfortable, give him the freedom to do what he wants, and tell him you appreciate him. This IS what I’ve been doing as I’VE matured and it does indeed work. However. If allowed he’d ONLY do what he wants to do if not reminded that we need to do what I want to do SOMETIMES! Thanks for the video!
@waynetang17636 жыл бұрын
He was not giving you the silent treatment to manipulate you. He made a calculation that it was less effort for him to give you the silent treatment then it was to dig into the other areas of his brain to continue the argument. By exposing the silent treatment you just put him back into the default argument mode. So you basically just wore him down. We ISTPs are awful manipulators because we don't have it in our tool set. But that means we often fall prey to manipulators.

I was really happy to read your comment, as I am INFP woman also married to an ISTP man. After 15 years of marriage, I feel like we are in a good place now. However, like you, the early part our relationship was very stormy as we would clash quite often. I was very emotionally needy and clingy, which I am sure probably annoyed him. Me being sensitive, and he having not much of a verbal filter, I felt crushed a lot. I know he wasn't intentionally doing it now. He just did not realize how I took it. I like how you said you matured and changed. I feel like I have too. I really feel like it's all on us (INFPs) to change if these marriages with an ISTP are to work, lol. I did stay by his side when he went through a kind of crisis period in his life, and I think I earned his undying loyalty. Since that time, I can't recall him saying anything majorly insensitive to me, and he increased even more his care for me. I look forward to spending the rest of our days together.

What you say about tactics is so true, I'm an ISTP-A and I play golf, and it's the perfect sport for me because I face situations head on and solve them and move on to the next shot, golf pretty much requires being observant, thinking, and perceptive at all times. I'm also a great chess player, funny thing is that if my opponent beats me by little the first time we play, I'll find a way to destroy them the next time and once I do they never beat me again in chess, at least with family and friends, pretty much every game that requires strategy I'm full GOAT mode LOL. And what you say about us being mentors is so true (and funny) and I totally agree, back in school I had this friend that would always ask me to give it a look to her work, and I would tear it apart so she could rebuild it, I mean my feedback was too much to handle, she even told me once: you don't have to be so harsh, I'm not stupid, ok? and I was like: you want me to help you or not? So everyone in class feared me whenever I was asked by the theacher to review their work, I eventually learned that before letting anyone make a fool of themselves give them a hand first, even if it wasn't my business at all I would always criticize constructively, not because I was an a-hole but I wanted everyone to do well

Oh the annoying people thing is so true. I will say that while I find it hard to care about most people, i do fear that I'm annoying or unworthy to the people I care about. And holy shit the appreciation thing too. Just last month I was telling my fiance that I don't mind cleaning the whole house and doing everything but i at least need a thank you and gratitude. Fi demon is true too

ISTP here. I resonate with some of the things on here, some more and some not as much. One thing I wanna say though is I’ve never been the type to have those strong enfj types. I usually tend to stay in my own lane and leave others problems alone to focus on my own. I do help the ones that are closest to me, but I keep to myself when around strangers. Another thing I see in myself is I usually tend to think about the consequences and effects of my actions before doing anything. It causes a lot of stress and anxiety since I do it even with little things, but it’s saved me from a few moments in my life lol. Good video! Keep it up!

This video made me realise that I’m probably pushing the ISTP in my life away with my ENTP weirdness and theorising so thank you for pointing that out! Now I’ve just gotta figure out how to be less weird around him....hmmm....

My husband is an ISTP and he is mechanically inclined adrenaline junky. He loves tinkering. Its so funny how accurate this was.

Great video. Just typed someone who has no understanding of typology as an ISTP. One of the tragedies of typology is that most types have no interest in it, yet could gain immensely from it. But that applies to psychology in general. Deeper understanding of self and others requires a certain mindset.

Similarly I have ISTJ brother. He’s very arrogant and dismissive of things like this.

Yes I guess it’s like being interested in electronics. You either are or aren’t. The good thing about learning it though is that it can help you in understanding yourself and others better.

My life was ruined by an ENFP and I almost died. This is very insightful. I had to develop my J over time. I do believe in conspiracy theories and metaphysics and I do not gamble. I see the tricks now. I understand why you hate us. We can be very shortsighted and stubborn. When I was younger I trusted so many people. I was wrong many times. I am glad for age, that's for sure.

After listening to the intp videos and reading about intps, it just didn't seem right and I didn't want to be an Intp because I don't see myself as one. After listening to and reading about istps it perfectly fits me.

Thank you for making these videos. For years now I thought I was an ISFJ, like a strange mess of one. But here you just explained me so well it made me cry. Im an ISFP, and proud of it. Turns out the ISFJ was my mom...

Your video is honestly very spot on about many essential ISTP caharacteristics that I never read anywhere else. My brother and most of my friends are enfp's. Sometime ago I just reflected back on it and realised that after awhile of interacting with them I just feel exhausted and used. But I could never put a finger on it until I see this video! Thank you! ps. I always have trouble with ENTP's but I always admire your type's confidence and the bravery of calling people out!

I'm an INFJ and my husband is an ISTP. This is so accurate! he hates it when he gets called out for being wrong, is extremely stubborn, but he thrives in situations where he can build or work on things. I usually let him do his thing, while i do my thing. But my biggest issue is how cold and selfish he can be... i guess the Fi demon!? How can i navigate that the best way without constantly being the one to do everything? i hope that makes sense lol

This is why I no longer want to have a relationship. I (ISTP) think I'm a horrible partner and it sucks to know and feel that the other person is hurting but I couldn't bring myself to make myself better for long because I kept on changing. 😔 I'm sorry for what you're going through.

@@nicoetic the most important thing is to learn to accept the no, and being able to ask again, if you'll start nagging and complaining, you'll never get things from ISTP because we don't give for those who don't already appreciate what we're doing for them right now. also clear communication such as NVC would be really useful to understand us.

damn it, this is the best explanation of ISTPs I have ever seen. If people around me ever wants to know me, I am sending them this video. Loyalty, gratitude part so correct. And yeah, I love mentoring people and see them succeed. Then I take pride in it. My ENFJ subconscious is so strong.
