I worked for RJ Corman derailment when this happened and we had to clean this up. I now work for CSX as a conductor, and the handbrakes are used when leaving unattended equipment. What had happened is the crew tied the train down and went off duty, well the engine shut down which stopped pumping air to the train, which in turn the brakes bled off and there wasn't sufficient hand brakes to hold the train so it rolled out. As far as the rail is concerned its pliable to enough to be transported.

Sounds to me like they didn't have enough air pressure built up in the lines that go from the compressor in the engine to the rest of the train. Usually a bad leak in the main system or the air hoses running car-to-car can cause that. This was a very serious leak if that was the case in this derailment. They only use hand brakes to set a car(s) out on a siding by themselves. Trains use dynamic braking going down grades now, not hand brakes.

If the train was stationary, the only (real) way to get it moving again is throttle power. The engineer has control of the brakes thru the whole train. Something went seriously wrong here, but what exactly is the compelling question. Did some forget to set the train brakes or did someone lose control of the train while on a grade? I would chose the latter.
