Omfg go out and get some wire wheels, put them in the drill and clean. Then cover it with degreaser let it set then power wash it. This video was too long for just cleaning a transmission. As I’ve told you before, quality over quantity.
I hope you kept your "scraper" as a souvenir as to how you first started off🤣😂🤣😂🤦♂️. It must have taken you forever and 6 years to clean that axle with that thin metal plate😂. But look on the bright side...You have to start somewhere right? If you don't have It buy now...I good investment is to buy a hot water pressure washer for those greasy jobs

While its out replace the starter bush. 6 and 12 volt bushes are different diameters. You can get 6v one that fit into 12v gearboxes and vice versa. The bushes are made from a pourous metal. You rest the new bush on your thumb and fill it with engine oil and squeeze it and the oil will come through the side of the bush. Then fit it. For getting the dried grease off you can get a twisted (cup shaped) wire brush wheel that are made to fit onto an angle grinder. Wear goggles as the crap goes everywhere but it gets is all off quickly. When the front mount goes back in remember the earth strap or otherwise you will melt the clutch and accelerator cables when you try to start it. LOL There is no thread in the shifter shaft. Its in the joiner. Its only a grub screw. have fun. LOL

Hi CT, First of all, there is a curved plastic shim between the axle housing and gearbox side cover. The way you washed the gearbox with the axle housing boots removed, much dirt would have entered the space where these shims are located. Just a few miles of running that gearbox will ruin those shims, together with both the axle housings as well as the gearbox side plates. Take the side plates off the gearbox and properly clean all components until they are free of all the crud. The front gearbox mounting nuts are easy to remove with a properly fitting thin walled ring spanner. When replacing the rubber mounting, don't forget the earthing strap. Without that, the ground from both starter motor as well as engine ignition will look for another avenue to earth, possibly resulting in a fire. Another viewer commented about replacing the input shaft spigot bearing in the engine crankshaft while the engine is out. Good idea. Yet another viewer commented about the gear selector shaft coupling. It is indeed fixed with a grub screw. The thread is in the coupling. The grub screw screws into the coupling, the hole in the shaft is not threaded and is merely provided to give the tapered end of the grub screw a locating place. Wishing you all the best and looking forward to further episodes. Cheers from Indonesia.

Hello Olli! Thank you for all the great advice! I really appreciate it. I will clean the transmission this weekend and get all the dirt out. Thank you! =) Stay tuned for more updates!
@ollimakkonen64815 жыл бұрын
@@CTmoog Thanks for the reply, CT. When you take off the side covers, it will be possible to move them down the axle tubes. However, because this is a van, the axle tubes end in reduction gear housings which means they will not be able to be moved away from the gearbox. No matter, the plastic shims have sufficient "give" so it will be possible to clean beneath them. A word of warning! These shims are very old, and more than likely to be somewhat brittle. Go VERY easy on bending them. If they break, it will be a big job to get them out and the new ones in. It will mean taking out the gears inside the reduction housing, so that the tubes can be removed. When replacing the spigot bearings in the crankshaft and the gearbox housing, check the fit respectively on the gearbox input shaft and the starter motor shaft prior to installing them. Over the years many sizes were available to suit various transmission and starter shafts. It would be such a shame to install them, only to later find that they are the wrong ones.... To get the old bushings out, just pack the bushing with grease, find a suitable sized drift, install it into the bushing, and tap the old bushing out. Might need to add grease at some stage, as the bushing is backing out.... You show steady improvement in your mechanical ability. Far cry from what it was when this job was started. Keep it up, the end result will make it all worthwhile. Now, just need to work on your workplace safety. NEVER EVER hold your hand behind the part you're drilling freehand... If that bit either breaks or bounces of of the hole, it will go straight through your hand, bones and all! Cheers....

In my experience, it is better if you clean the dirt and grease / road muck off the outside of assemblies BEFORE beginning to disassemble things like transaxles etc. The best way to do this is with a stuff brush and some solvent followed by a gentle rinse with a garden hose. . The pressure washer will drive water into the bearings etc so they must be removed immediately afterward to prevent rusting. The seals are designed mainly to keep low pressure oil in and not high pressure water out. A pressure washer is the LAST resort for cleaning as it usually does as much damage as it does good. On those transmission mount bolts: always clean rust etc. off the exposed threads and lubricate them BEFORE trying to loosen the nut.. For the one that has poor access - get a small L-bar and a short socket. To remove the shift adapter - use a puller rather than hammering on a delicate assembly like a shift mechanism. Also: are you sure that thing that looked like a broken bolt wasn’t actually a socket head (Allen) set screw? It might be a good idea to get a manual and an exploded parts diagram for these assemblies before starting in on them. That way you will know you dealing with and can use the correct tools.

Not a spacer CT....broken wheel cylinder...if I'm not mistaken that grub screw doesn't thread into the shift-shaft. Threads through the adapter and bottoms on the shaft. Important that it bottom with no play between the shaft and adapter that might affect shift quality..

You are correct on what you are sharing. The hockey stick is just drilled for the grub screw. You can clearly see how the wheel cyclinder bol hole was broke there one spacers. A small gear puller may have removed the shift coupler and a little heat..

Hi there, Mr. CT. Just watched the video and one more advice for you... =) Removing the mount bolt (the one you couldnt reach with the socket), the hammer is usually not a good idea, because in the socket kits, if not the cheapest and smallest ones, usually comes an attachment like some sort of a u-joint, which should be able to get you in the tightest corners! Other than that, very relaxing video. I bet you must be one of a few that enjoy cleaning greasy and grimey stuff.. Ok, there are tastes for anyone. =) Good work by the way and there are eyes upon you...

A short extension or a universal sometimes works when nuts & bolts are boxed in. When yard sales look for snap-on sockets they have thinner walls than other sockets. Heep the long bolts for the shocks you may need them for the new ones. The shifter link had a square head bolt with a cone point it fits into a cone divot on the shaft you probably drilled into no worries It simply fits into a notch so it can't spin or slip the thread on the joint is all that is required. After you install it you'll notice a hole in the square head you run a wire through the holes so they can't undo themselves it's the old version of lock-tight. If you see the wire broken you know something is loose & needs attention. check your shop manual. You should get some ez-outs they seem to work for everyone but me. Your puller may have saved the day too. When I saw the Porsche appear I thought you were going to drop the drive train into Rusty But the Porsche will give the ability to block-out the Florida sun by sticking your nose in the air. I think that a clay bar some polish & wax will clean her up. Go You, Get down with your bad self!

There was once a spray engine cleaning product that may have been called gunk or something like that. It was a sort of soapy solvent mix that was pretty good at dissolving stuff such as on this transmission before a water wash. Having it easy to get to welding another bolt to the broken one would have been a better option the heat from the weld will also help remove the bolt. It welding not a good option grind bolt surface flat and center punch the bolt. Next start with 1/8' drill and increase keeping the drill straight do not wobble it around. Once you increase the drill size close to the outside wall of the bolt use an "easyout" whatis left will back out and there will be no damage to the threads. If it is a through hole , once you increase dill size to the outside wall of the broken bolt 9 times out of 10 the drill grab or bind and broken bolt comes right out-- again zero damage to the threads. I would get a bottoming tap and chase the treads and see who it looks..

I have seen other KZbin videos where other things, like tools or children's toys, are restored, and if a hole is stripped or damaged, the person restoring it will weld the hole completely shut, redrill the hole, and retap it. Often times, where a hole was previously, like on a support plate, part of the plate broke off, and so he welds that area with "too much" weld to build that area back up, grind it down to the proper shape, and then drills the hole. I hope you don't have to go to that extreme with the shift spindle on the transmission.

Before pressure washing treat with a solvent or degreaser and allow to soak in. Scrape heavy stuff BEFORE pressure washing not after

Sorry to say but you just misused your pressure washer, any pressure washer can remove all that junks easily, I knew from begining the way you were directing the stream of pressurized water cant help much, now you are redoing and spending more time to finish the painful and messy diesel cleaning job, the red tip of pressure washer can cut true asphalt easily if using properly and correct way.

you not heard of a bolt remover drill a hole as you did the insert it and unscrew
@CTmoog5 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill! No I haven't. Who makes them? Thank you! Stay tuned for more! =)
@johnmca56435 жыл бұрын
I know what Bills talking about, but I don't know a brand. You drill a hole in the broken bolt. The bolt removal drill bit has exterior threading that grabs the hole in the bolt when the bolt removal drill bit is operated in the drills reverse setting. So it grabs the hole in the bolt and reverses the bolt out.

Hello CT. It's slowly progressing. Are you planning to disassemble the gearbox? For inspection and to remove any dirt? Wouldn't surprise me if there weren't any sand particles in the gearbox during the cleaning. Did you receive the e-mail about the fuel cycle? Greetings from Germany
