Just a few years ago dozens of tourists died from alcohol and methanol poisoning in DR resorts. Looks like staff members were directed to titrate and dilute regular alcohol with methanol. No answer or public apologies were ever issued and no final report given. The public is still waiting on a final conclusion with these cases. Tourists keep dying in DR more than any other country in the Caribbean.

I went to the DR last year. I have never been so sick. I remember looking for hospitals or resort clinics close to me and medi-vacs. I just kept counting down the days in my room until I could come back to Canada. Worst experience on a trip. Others at the resort including my spouse fell ill.

I was there towards the end of 2023. I also got very sick. No vomiting, but had horrible diarrhea, a high fever, chills...When I got home, I had to go to the hospital and be placed on an IV. My skin was grey, I was so pale. They ran every kind of test but could not figure out what I was sick with. Lasted about 10 days before I started to recover.

I’ve had food poisoning I wound up in hospital 8 days I know the extreme pain. Couldn’t walk, lost a ton of blood, dr gave instructions if required blood transfusions, my skin was grey in color so not far off from dying. There’s a lot involved in severe food poisoning! This may be common sense but don’t ever let them do a surgery, if common food safety is an issue, can’t imagine the state of medical hygiene and training. I will add the big corporation that owns resort obviously didn’t have proper food safety education and procedures in place or followed which also requires protocols. They obviously also grossly mishandled an emergency with their guests, that is beyond inexcusable.

When my family went ten years ago to the DR for an all inclusive week vacation. My mother and sister got very bad food poisoning a few days into the trip, when we came back to Canada and rushed to the hospital, it turned out they got intestinal worms from the food at the resort and had to be on medication for a week to release the parasites. Never again will we ever go back there.

I lived 11 years in Haiti (can’t think of worse conditions with water and food as water is used in food) and I never really got dangerously sick. But I had a doctor I could call anytime if a problem. Also, after a year or so there, you develop antibodies like the local population. If you have 0 antibody (not used to travel often), go to places like Cuba, Florida, Tunisia, Spain, Portugal etc The main problem in that horrible case imo was the lack of proper response from the hotel. If sick and resort does not care, bypass them and call the ambulance yourself. When travelling, those emergency numbers are more important than your passport. Find a friend of a friend that you can pay to bring you to hospital if emergency before leaving. Or make a deal with a taxi driver. Have more than one layer of protection. Food poisoning can be easily resolved if you act fast. Don’t ever wait as once you get septicaemia, you are most likely dead.

I've been to Cuba twelve times in the last thirteen years. I've been sick there three times. I think that natural born Canadians are not used to the bacteria, so we get sick easily. Cubans are hearty, and their bodies can easily fight off a little bacteria. I've been to great resorts in Cuba, with great chefs, and some that were not so great. If you're Canadian, and you see flies flying around the buffet, don't eat there.

Was in Cuba a few years ago. Standing in the omelette line waiting for my turn, a cockroach ran onto the grille and got fried. The cook took his spatula and flung the fried roach in the garbage with the eggshells and then flipped the omelettes with the same spatula without "batting an eye". Just another day working the omelette station l guess. I decided to eat watermelon and a banana instead. We all had the worst hives of our life from that trip that lasted for over a week. The place was a fly breeding ground. Everywhere on our food. They blamed covid even though it was a few years later .

Multiple Americans have died after years of food poisoning and tainted alcohol in the DR. Its well documented. I honostly dont understand why anyone takes these risks. What a terrible tragedy for this family.

@@marg3153 Honestly I'm surprised this resort hasn't been looked at as from the review I see multiple reports of food poisoning. And for that price there are way better resorts in DR to visit (assuming I looked at the same one on google maps) anyways, enjoy and stay safe. The other guy acts like no one can get food poisoning in Canada but I did (lived in Toronto 8 years) still I just saw it as things happen.

We docked there during my cruis in November and its a disgusting country. There was trash EVERYWHERE. I cant upload a photo on here but i wish i could show you the mile wide garbage patch that we had to go through 🤮

Yes, it can be very dangerous. Dehydration and other complications can set in quickly and, without the proper timely treatments, even a previously completely healthy person can die

I was staying at the exact same hotel at the time when this happened, my brother got sick after I enquired about the quality standards of the meals we were eating and he passes away in the exact hospital the mom and son died at, I was down the hall from them, we heard there screaming and they probably heard ours 😢

When I visited the DR a year ago, I avoided the salads, raw veggies and anything dairy. I was luckily fine. So sorry for the horrific loss of 2 lives, my condolences. Hopefully the resort is thoroughly investigated and hygiene & proper food sanitation practices are put in place which will be strictly monitored so this never happens again.
