"It's time for new masters." Well said! These days people are so afraid to just TRY something new or get involved into a hobby deeply because they're too busy weighing the hypothetical pros and cons worrying too much about the future. Sometimes you just gotta let go and get lost in the process to discover what you truly enjoy.

I could sit and listen to your thoughts all day Valerie 🥰 You talking about water reminded me of a poem i came across yesterday called Fear by Khalil Gibran. It is said that before entering the sea a river trembles with fear. She looks back at the path she has traveled, from the peaks of the mountains, the long winding road crossing forests and villages. And in front of her, she sees an ocean so vast, that to enter there seems nothing more than to disappear forever. But there is no other way. The river can not go back. Nobody can go back. To go back is impossible in existence. The river needs to take the risk of entering the ocean because only then will fear disappear, because that’s where the river will know it’s not about disappearing into the ocean, but of becoming the ocean.

Every artist needs to try making paint at least once! Even making a tiny amount of egg tempera using powdered pigment gives a valuable perspective on the history of the craft, and helps us appreciate the vast variety of affordable, ready-to-use colors available today. The process we see here involves the same essential steps as large-scale manufacture- the mortar & pestle and glass muller apply the same crush and shear forces as the triple-roller mill we use in factory-made paints. We see Valerie conducting small-batch testing, taking careful measurements, and recording results here just like our paint chemists do. Note that she is using protective equipment where necessary- every artist needs to judge their own ability to observe proper safety measures and whether their studio can accommodate the process they intend to use. Some things like sun-thickened linseed oil can be done practically anywhere, but amber varnishes and heat-bodied oils are extremely unsafe to make except in a well-equipped laboratory or manufacturing facility.

I get to see you introspect and read to understand yourself, and by putting this out to the world helping others as well. As an artist its a huge deal at least for me, I'm so nervous and anxious to write online or share my works even, You share your process and thoughts. Each video so enriching and beautiful. Thanks Valerie:) You deserve the best and all the success. Ive been drawing for 20years now, yet very few works here and there are up. Im also anxious about Social media etc and I freeze. I was made fun for drawing in the realistic way in college and somehow I always think whats the point of it. Then I came across you, Ive been watching your uploads from your second video upload, I look for your name and keep looking for new ones. Also, I re-watch many of them. In my 20's I remember having much clarity. Then I Feel its been beaten out of me coz people around me constantly compete though i never wanted to, all i wanted to do is work and earn a living. Now Im in the crossroads, I wish I can earn purely by drawing and painting not dependant on anyone, but not everyone is Valerie to make beautiful content. Not sure if you have shared before or you mind sharing it how old you are, I ask as you seem to be many years younger than me, yet such a wise little one you are Valerie. (Edited )

The thing you said, about old masters being old and that we now need new masters, is so true. People are so fixated on being ''like the old masters'' or even ''better than the old masters'' but really what everyone should be is different from the old masters. They've done their best, now we need to do our best. Art history is being written as we speak and the only thing we could do ''wrong'' is being so fixated on the past that we don't discover the future (of art). Thanks for the amazing video as always Valerie :)

I will say this, there are still old masters to learn from, they are not gone people just don’t care to listen because they think they know it all. Also the there is a story about Michelangelo , he visited an art school and the students were drawing their own drawings and he asked why, because in his day they would copy the masters over and over again. I think that is important copying while learning and then branching out to learn your own style. I fully adore your style of mastery, and being excellent in the small things as much as the big things, very inspiring ❤

I like what you say about observation and empirical discoveries. I just came back from a week long trip to visit some family, and I forgot my phone at home, so I ended up spending an entire week without it. That meant that I suddenly had way less distractions than usual, and after a couple of days, I was bored. I was putting myself limits with thoughts like "I don´t have access to reference images to draw what I want, so I might just wait until get back home" and things like that. But then I said, well, the world is full of references and I don't need a phone when I have eyes to see and legs that can take me to different places. So I started observing the world around me, and the plants and trees in the garden, and drawing a lot from life. And just reflecting on things. I felt like I could do anything I wanted to, like I understood a little more clearly the essence of things. And all because I was bored. What I'm trying to say with this is how important it is to observe to get to the underlying theme of things. But also, how we must create the circumstances that allow this to happen. And to get bored, I think, is necessary for us step out and just observe. I like that you remind us the power of observation and just being ,Valerie, because it is something I find is very fleeting in the environment we live in. Thank you for your videos c:

Your thought about understanding water is understanding life is absolutely reasonable. Every living individual is made out of a certain amount of water, we humans even more than 50 percent (I think?). Water is always moving and changing just like life. We look different every day, in our early years our skin is soft and keen but as we grow older we get wrinkles, you know? 😅 Just like the autumn leaves. In the beginning green, later in beautiful colours and in the end they are dried out and crinkled. These changes are caused by water. So understanding water is basically understanding how every living individual, no matter if animal, plant or a human being, is constantly changing and moving. I hope this was well understandable. I also just wanted to say how important your videos are to me as a "growing up artist". It inspires and calms me so much to see you creating. I'm sure that you are an important person in my art journey and you are basically living in my dream room, so:))

When you said that understanding water has to do with understanding life, I somehow know exactly what you mean, yet I also can’t exactly put it into words. Every aspect of life and existence in some way can be compared to water’s behavior. The way it has the ability to be soft and hard, fluid and solid, as transcendent as the clouds and as grounding as a river, ever changing yet ever persisting, remaining individual and yet connecting to the greater. I once wrote a short story some time ago in my attempt to sort out this thought but it ended up coming out just as ambiguous as in my head lol. It had been some time since I visited that thought, and I thank you for bringing it back to me. I hope you keep contemplating and searching and eventually find the answer, I think there is a deep wisdom in it. Beautiful video as always.💕

This is so true and powerful-it’s time for new masters!! That’s how we move forward, we always look the the past and what was done. It really is time to look forward to what can be done now and new ways of mastery.

This video is an art piece in of itself! It’s very infrequent for me to tear up over a video simply bc of how beautiful it is; this usually happens to me when I read an excellent book that is well crafted and slowly paced. But to have this emotion with a youtube video? God that’s almost unbelievable!

❤ Miss you and your vlogs. This has been one of perfect video about mindset topic and yes it matters to see channelling of mind with challenge and how you maintain your attitude will result to your ability to know how much more can a brain be of resource by using the exercise of testings what we desire/become curious to master more than our craft/art.... ❤ I needed to enjoy this video a lot and thank you girl. God bless.❤ I'm a fan of experimenting and my weakness is creating Canvas/frame. I could learn to listen to my mind more than my body, but often times we find ourselves tired but when it comes to duties or the break of habit which shouldn't stop our day to day plans it's worth doing.

Curiosity is a very nice flaw. Like, I share with you this desire to understand things and learn. You are pretty when you marvel at a discovery. I think that making your own paintings is showing respect for ancestral knowledge. Me, it gave me wings. Thank you for sharing your art studio moments with us. 😊
