...But in the long hundred years since the white man came, I have seen my freedom disappear like the salmon going mysteriously out to sea. The white man's strange customs which I could not understand, pressed down upon me until I could no longer breathe. When I fought to protect my land and my home, I was called a savage. When I neither understood nor welcomed this way of life, I was called lazy. When I tried to rule my people, I was stripped of my authority. My nation was ignored in your history textbooks - they were little more important in the history of Canada than the buffalo that ranged the plains. I was ridiculed in your plays and motion pictures, when I drank your fire water, I got drunk -- very, very drunk. And I forgot. Oh Canada, how can I celebrate with you this Centenary, this hundred years? Shall I thank you for the reserves that are left to me of my beautiful forests? For the canned fish of my rivers? For the loss of my pride and authority, even among my own people? For the lack of my will to fight back? No! I must forget what's past and gone. Oh, God in Heaven! Give me back the courage of the olden Chiefs. Let me wrestle with my surroundings. Let me again, as in the days of old, dominate my environment. Let me humbly accept this new culture and through it rise up and go on. Oh, God! Like the Thunderbird of old I shall rise again out of the sea; I shall grab the instruments of the white man's success---his education, his skills, and with these new tools I shall build my race into the proudest segment of your society. Before I follow the great Chiefs who have gone before us, oh Canada, I shall see these things come to pass. I shall see our young braves and our chiefs sitting in the houses of law and government, ruling and being ruled by the knowledge and freedom of our great land. So shall we shatter the barriers of our isolation. So shall the next hundred years be the greatest and proudest in the proud history of our tribes and nations." ~Chief Dan George O' Great Spirit whose voice I hear in the winds, I come to you as one of your many children. I need your strength and your wisdom. Make me strong not to be superior to my brother, but to be able to fight my greatest enemy: "Myself" ~Chief Dan George

"But you're human? She'd your old ways and assimilate since it divides us" is what an asinine globalist and "progressive thinker" would state....... I can't apologize on behalf of the individuals or populations which have done your folks wrong but it is what it is......

james bond I am a white man from Turtle Island myself, that was assimilated too. The color of skin makes no difference. What is good and just for one is good and just for the other, and the Great Spirit made all men brothers. I have a red skin, but my grandfather was a white man. What does it matter? It is not the color of the skin that makes me good or bad. ~White Shield - Arikara Chief

In memory of our parents Danny and Clotilda Gus home in the 1990's their marriage ceremony it was asked by " why don't Indian go to church ?" There was Danny telling you about his best friend (indigenous child ) was killed at a chruch run Alberni Indian Residential School . Then with our parents, their families n friends, it was shared that indigenous CHILDREN where abused n killed at church run Indian Residential Schools . Many thanks to you Kevin for all your life's sacrifices for sharing the truths about murders & missing indigenous children at all church run Indian Residential Schools. Let us never forget. @@hiddenfromhistory100 for the rest of my life now , going by the name Freda Heather Joseph. In all my heart , forever great full for my late parents Danny and Clotilda Gus in having you preformed their private wedding ceremony in our home ( veteran sland. 5010 MissionRoad / a driveway away from the former AlberniIndian Residential school site). Kevin Annett changed the course of lives for many ,many many Indigenous families. You asked Danny " why not in a chruch for the ceremony?" Danny had such power in sharing the horrors of abuse and murders of little Indian (indigenous) children in church run Indian Residential Schools. He opened his heart to you while grandchildren, Henry, Michelle and little Heather, and few friends and family, all witnessed his courage in sharing how his best friend was murdered . Their were very young children, without any help . Many thanks to you ,Kevin Annett for all of your life's sacrifices in sharing the horrors of abuse and murders of little indigenous children everywhere. Let us never forget. EVERY CHILD MATTERS ❤ 🦅

I recorded a number of stories like these while making a documentary on these schools. We covered the Mohawk Institute aka the Mush Hole in Ontario and a school in New York called the Thomas Indian School. The truth and reconciliation commission put a DVD in their records. Canada has acknowledged what has happened however in the U.S. this is not the case. There are over 100 Native children buried at the Carlisle school in Pennsylvania alone. This is thoroughly documented.

It is very sad knowing that the indigenous peoples of other countries suffered just as badly too... The white man tried extremely hard to completely obliterate the indigenous tribes from the face of the earth... The words of Chief Dan George and also White Shield - Arikara Chief are truly words of wisdom for all of man kind to take to heart and live by as we are indeed all brothers and sisters of the Holly Spirit above.... Peace and love to everyone upon the earth both past and present, we are all human beings after all, remember this is true.

I am a Roman Catholic and I went to parochial school with nuns as my teachers. I have always known that nuns can be brutal in their corporal punishment of children; however, this report goes beyond the pale . I AM ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIED that the Catholic Church was involved in this kind of treatment to human beings and I am DEVASTATED that the Church was directly involved in genocide. How could priest and nuns commit murder on a daily basis???... I believe wholeheartedly in the objective teaching of the sacred scriptures and the Roman Catholic Church; however, from this point forward I will never trust another member of the Church's hierarchy for the rest of my life. MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON THEIR SOULS, because I have neither the stomach nor the will to forgive them.

Residential schools did not close. The schools remain institutions known as jails, foster homes, and educational facilities. Similar to how racism and discrimination evolved to the idea that worth is based on your income level or what your family can provide you. Look at the homes the whites own, the educational background they are privileged to have, or the way educational facilities marked their course work versus coloured. Pamela Roach (2023) has found that two-thirds of Alberta physicians surveyed have implicit anti-Indigenous bias. Because there is a bias with doctors and their preference for white people versus indigenous people, educational institutions will also have an anti-indigenous bias based on the formating of their papers or the way they answer the questions, similar to how students who do not have English as a first language face a lower grade average than the white population of students. The system works to ensure the white race and their supporters continue to thrive and own all the wealth and opportunities for their families and people.

Indigenous people were vicious before they were made civilized by the Church, their evil acts were calling upon God for the light of the Gospel and the gift of Baptism, a lot of Priests and missionaries were martyred by the chiefs of these indigenous tribes. Once again the history has been distorted to hold the Catholic Church accountable. The truth and reconciliation team even stated that some kids, even before they were taken to the residential schools were almost dead due to the poor quality of life that they were living in their tribes, and it was the fault of the indigenous affair not to bring those kids back to their families because of the financial resources, see how a lot of these people who have been against our faith are ignoring the simple facts and claiming that the Church was the reason for the death of those kids. The indigenous people who have been not been evangelized by the Catholic Church are still living in the dark ages, their native languages are useless, they should be thankful to the Church who brought them out of the utter darkness to where they are right now.

This is sad. Those Nuns and Priests were not servants of God. I'm sure they are all in hell for what they did to these children. How can people who were supposed to be with god be so vicious? How can they beat and murder children of God. One day all Indigenous people (and supporter of us) are going to come together. And we will change this country as well as Canada!! I'll be praying for everyone!

It wasn't only catholic churches that ran residential schools, many protestant denominations in Canada had them too, and the children did not fare much better, judging by the survivor stories minister Kevin Annet heard from the natives of his part of BC when he tried to racially integrate his church. I agree, those that ran those schools would not be recognized by the creator they profess to worship. I'm glad that survivors and advocates like Kevin succeeded in getting Canada to apologize, and consider reparations and the cessation of mining tar sands on or near tribal lands. I hope to see similar changes in the USA in my lifetime, and am profoundly grateful to all those standing their ground as protestors, at Standing Rock and many other tribal lands under attack by corporations. We owe a huge debt to all First Nations peoples for showing all nations how to survive in the face of oppression and defend what is sacred.

What a load of BS. Canada is noted as a generous and compassionate country. Why are only the natives complaining? If this genocide took place why did it not occur to other groups? One of the recommendations is that money be paid to native groups and chiefs in perpetuity in order to bring about 'reconciliation'. What a crock. But you can't say anything against the natives else you will be an insensitive racist. Note that native commenters will say every kind of racist remarks about non-natives.
