Really appreciate these informative videos mate. This cup cycle is the first one I've paid attention to and it helps so much to learn the rules, language, outline and history of the Americas Cup. Thanks!

Kiwi's been good for the cup they open up more events like the womens racing etc.

Also I would argue it's the most nearly level an America's Cup playing field has ever been. (Treating CoR as a partner rather than an adversary, setting up fair Protocols, sharing Info and Technology , etc etc) It seems clear that the kiwis want to win it against the strongest competition possible. Rather than making it artificially hard for them. (it's always going to be hard, no need to screw the scrum) The kiwis seem (more or less) to realise that winning is only winning if your opponent has had a fair go. After the two wins by GB, Bleddyn Mon told of numerous kiwi fans approaching him on shore to offer warm congratulations to the team on their success.
@GottenhimfellaАй бұрын
In fairness I'd have to add something which is increasingly obvious: the kiwi effort is actually an ANZAC effort, and personally I think that's crucial. If Australia get their act together and mount another decent challenge the kiwis will have a fight on their hands which I frankly doubt they'd have an even chance of winning, once the Ockers got a few campaigns under their belt... And it's notable that they are careful to pick Aussies who represent the finest qualities that great nation can exhibit, socially, not just in sailing skill. Altruism, generosity of spirit, pithy, succinct communication, and bubbly but casual confidence without the usual attendant ego issues. It's an inspiring foil to what the kiwis bring to a table, the combination seems to catalyse a chemistry which is hard to beat. It first (AFAIK?) emerged in two world wars, and it still works (when everything clicks into place) remarkably well.

While it's not an accurate statement, during the 12 metre era there were different defender syndicates competing, and none defended the cup more than twice in a row. You'd have to go back to the J-class era when the Vanderbilt family had a lock on defending the cup for the statement to be totally wrong.
@PJSOАй бұрын
I thought so too but he said "team". The U.S dominance was with multiple teams over the 130+ years. A good distinction
@weatheranddarknessАй бұрын
@@carl4889 There's literally only one syndicate that won three cups in a row, Harold S Vanderbuilt. Actually reading closer it looks like Harold was not the head of the syndicate for all three, but he did skipper the first boat. Those three campaigns, Enterprise, Rainbow, and Ranger were the last three cups in J class boats incidentally. Herreschoff on the other hand, was directly responsible for several winning boats, but never ran a team.

Yes, teams under that flag, sailing for the NYC won continuously. However, none of the teams won more than two in a row, either no longer competing, or being beat in the defender selection series. ETNZ on the other hand has yet to face a competing defender from NZ.

excellent video. I suppose, as Grand Dalton said today in the interview while on the way back to the harbour after the win, that the new challenger will be announced next days, that behind the curtains, already the relevant decisions are being made. Lets see if the Brits can repeat their position or if the American boys step in. I cant imagine, that Alinghi with all their technical problems or the French team might pop up.

Hi Matt, I was intrigued with some comments coming off the Kiwi boat in and about race 5 where they came off their foils in the pre-start. It looked to my eye that they were well clear of Britannia but they were perhaps reacting to the risk that Britannia would use their right if way to dial them down. Do you access to the boffins required to run simulations of that start sequence (perhaps the umpires software?) and perhaps get a few sailors to run through the potential outcomes if NZ had not Gybed when they did? It would be awesome viewing. Cheers

As far as the two camps on what direction the cup should go in, why not do both? Have a modern cup cycle as is currently happening and have a classic cycle. Possibly continue with 12mR boats. There is still development happening in the meter boats, just look at the current 5mR and 6mR winning boats. I would love to watch classic match style races in large boats. The races would probably be very close and fun to watch.

What then alinghi made wrong in valencia? Was it only sign a new challenger before last race yacht was over line?
@knutpohl339Ай бұрын
It was that the yacht club of Valencia (I believe that was the intended challenger of record) was relatively recently founded and LL challenged in court that the challenger of record was qualified as such, which was deemed that it was not.
@grahamsnyder762Ай бұрын
As @knutpohl339 says, there was a legal challenge that resulted in the initial challenger being ruled ineligible. The Deed of Gift stipulates that challenging club's "annual regatta" must meet particular criteria, but the challenging club was formed specifically to challenge for the cup and had never held a regatta of any kind. After multiple appeals it was determined that even if the challenger had an intention to hold a compliant annual regatta in the future, this did not constitute the club "having an annual regatta" as required by the deed.

This cup needs a big rethink. The racing was mostly predictable and boring. The whole event with the cource layout up and down legs mostly 6 times. We have lost what sailing is all about it is so sterile with toooo much Teck. I look back in history when they used real yachts and marvel how good seamanship won the day. These boats are all frustrated aircraft wishing to fly but can't.

The whole concept based on obscene levels of direct carbon emissions is unacceptable in todays environment. The message to todays children , from the Americas Chp , and other elite sailing events, is that winners get entitlement to polute, losers , and the rest of us get to clean up the mess. This is the antithesis of good sportmanship..
