Just wanted to start weaving my first rep weave rug and was so grateful to find a curmudgeon video for tips and tricks - thanks so much - still so helpful even after 8 years!

Those are really beautiful! I bet your wife is thrilled and such heirloom pieces to pass to your children. Outstanding pattern Andy and my colors, lol. I am still trying to wrap my head around it, but I learn more and more watching your video's. Thanks for showing us your craftsmanship , they are truly a work of art. Take care and God Bless! xxx

Thank you so much Pam, I really do appreciate your comments. I had no idea that Burgundy (wine) and Gary were color favorites, they happened to be what the local yarn store had enough of, and what looked good, for me to do this project. Starting to get my brain to begin thinking of what to do next. Maybe another set of towels, dish or fancy hand towels (I already have too many - may have to give a few away) . . . not sure which, thinking of maybe a "block weave" something like "summer & winter", I just don't know yet, but after taking a month or two off from weaving, I really want to do another project soon. Thanks again for watching, and Yes, God Bless.

Dear Curmudgeon, Thank you for your videos and your explanations. It's a true pleasure listening to you teach. As a self-taught weaver I appreciate you and your work. God Bless

Margarita Dunphy And thank you for your comments. I too was self taught for about my first 10 years of weaving when I finally took a class in double weave, because I just could not wrap my brain around that concept. And then another 10 years passed before I went to Vavstuga for my 2nd class. Most of my learning came from Deb Chandler's "Learning to Weave" book and from many many mistakes.

Honestly, I think the fact that you became tongue tied slows everything down enough that it makes the PROCESS understandable. I've seen other demos of techniques and without fail they have given the rule without the reason. Your example of what happens when you don't cross the thin and thick properly (and how to tell what "proper" is) was perfect. I don't have more than a rigid heddle now, but I'm studying your videos for someday when I may get a larger loom.
@curmudgeon669 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments Ann. I'm glad that slowing it down, even if I did trip over my own tongue, helped make this a bit more understandable. I suppose I could say "if" but let's go with "When" you do get a different loom, I suggest at least four shafts (harnesses). Table looms are great for getting an understanding of how the "treadling" works, but you have to convert "draw downs" to "lift plans" with most patterns. Yet table looms take up much less space, so if that is an issue for you then a table loom is the way to go. I've got an Ashford 8 shaft, 24" wide table loom that is really great to work with. When you do get to weaving more, I would love to see an example of your work. (I should probably do a video with the table loom one of these days)

curmudgeon66 I have a 24" Harp. Just finished my first piece of cloth - 10'x20" after washing. It will be used to cover a cushion for my husband's computer chair (with some to spare). Plain weave, but warp and weft was 4 strands of 20/2 cotton in green, blue, yellow. so it turned out tweedy. If I ever upgrade, I know I will be going with something wider and probably 8 shaft to have the option of fancy patterns with fine thread.

Hi, I ran into your videos a couple weeks or so ago and have been devouring them (also became a subscriber). I've been weaving on a rigid heddle loom but wanted more so I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my new Baby Wolf (4 shaft version for now) and want to hit the floor running. I have always loved warp rep and really enjoyed this video. Using the stick in the shed reminds me of what one does when inkle weaving - clever on your part! Anyway, keep up the great videos as this 77 year old curmudgeon-ess type old lady has a lot of catching up to do :)

I would like to see a take on your weaving records and how you have your samples. Love your videos!
@curmudgeon664 жыл бұрын
Ahhh -. . . yes, now there is the problem, I am not the most accurate record keeper. I do have some written records but not on every project. And because of that lack of record keeping on my part, I must tell you that you do have access to the vast majority of my records! You see, my videos are the best set of records that I have of what I have done.
@AlagaiBanty7 жыл бұрын
This is just super - thanks! I'm trying rep on the rigid heddle (well, rep-ish as I can't beat quite so hard). On my sample I was having problems with missing warp threads on the selvages, and you explained how to avoid that exactly.

Andy, who doesn't become tongue tied, especially when making a video? With me it's the rule, not the exception. I love the burgundy and gray colors you chose! The rugs were gorgeous! If I could make something like this, Ms. Cheeks would marry me in a heartbeat, even sooner if it had such a cute kitty rolling on it! Great job my friend!

Hey John, Glad you like the rugs, I'm sure Miss Cheeks is very happy with your cooking and fishing, and most of all with your sense of humor which comes out clearly in your videos. Thanks for watching, my friend.

The rugs look amazing and I wonder if I can do something similar on my new rigid heddle loom. I'm brand spanking new to weaving and what I've seen by watching your videos is tempting me to save my money up for either an 8 shaft table loom maybe 16. I live in Brooklyn New York so space is very limited. But I'm so glad I subscribed to your channel. I'm learning so much. Thanks for sharing your talents with us and the amazing things you make.

Wow Andy! Good Job! The rugs look great. I totally understood what you meant with the selvedges. If you don't loop the wefts under and over each other at the right times you compromise the selvedges and the rugs would come apart over time. I guess if you forget and make that mistake you would have to use rug binding tape on the edges to keep them from unraveling. bjr
@curmudgeon6610 жыл бұрын
Barbara, I fully admit that I missed doing this a few times, ending up with a long warp float on the edge. I hope it won't cause too much trouble. This is only the 2nd time I've done REP weaving, the previous was 5 or 6 years ago at least, and I have forgotten more than I learned. I'm quite happy that you understood what I was trying to say with my words just not coming out clearly. Thank you so much for watching my videos.

HI, I just ran into your videos for the first time. I am trying to wrap (warp) my brain around Rep Weave so that I can try it. You told us what you used for the thick weft, but could you also say what you used for the warp and the thin weft? Thanks!
@curmudgeon668 жыл бұрын
Maysville carpet warp.

The rugs turned out beautifully. How long did it take to make them? Thanks for explaining why you needed to use the stick to open up the shed. I hadn't seen that problem come up before so now I know what to do when it happens to me. You make everything look so easy, and after watching your videos I feel like I can do it too. My husband watches your videos now too. Thank you.

Carolyn, I don't keep real good records of my time, as I do this more as a hobby and relaxation than for "production". But in an overall sense it was a couple of weeks, or working when I felt like it, on and off, as the mood would strike me. Yeah, that stickyness of the warp will occur with rep weave as the warp threads are so closely packed. And I only used 32 ends per inch. The "recommended" epi for using carpet warp in a warp-rep rug is 36 epi. To do that I would have had to have 3 ends per dent in a 12 dent reed, as opposed the what I actually used of 4 epi in an 8 dent reed. Not sure, but I suspect that it would have been even stickier, not to mention that I would have needed to buy an extra spool of each of the colors.

Did you ever try a floating salvage? I find it solves a lot of problems
@curmudgeon664 жыл бұрын
Yes - I use floating selvedge threads often, but not on Warp Rep, which is really just Plain Weave with different thickness of weft. No need for FS on Plain Weave..

Hi, Thanks so much for your videos, I really enjoy them and feel like we are friends :) I have watched all the videos from Interweave, and now have a lot to think about before I actually start using my Artisat Leclerc 4 shaft jack loom. I REALLY like the tea towels and Gamps and of course Rep. I have a few questions, I was not clear on the Neilsen pattern wether I can do that on 4 shafts. She did not go in to that rug on the video, so glad you did. It is going to be my first project now, rugs like you made, my mother will love them for her new house. Can you please answer the type of yarn/threading and reed used? I really decided to learn all the technical/theory side before setting out and possibly making mistakes and wasting yarn. Its expensive in Australia. I love cats also :) Sharyn
@curmudgeon669 жыл бұрын
Shahran Profector Shahran, the short answer is that YES you can do a pattern such as I did on 4 shafts. That is one of the neet things about Rep Weave, one can get 4 blocks on 4 shafts. For my warp I used cotton rug warp. Here is a description of that yarn from Yarn Barn of Kansas (I know that is too far for you to buy from but it is a good description) 8/4 Carpet Warp 100% unmercerized cotton 8 oz tube / 800 yds 1600 yards per pound sett: 10-12 epi for rag rugs, 36 epi for rep weave 4-ply with a tight twist machine wash and dry This is the yarn that used to be sold as Maysville. For my weft I used the "Sugar and Cream" yarn that one can buy at Walmart and other fabric / craft stores. I used FOUR threads at the same time in the weft to make it thick. Trying to remember the reed I used, I think it was 12 dents per inch. In any case, Shahran, please feel free to consider me a friend, as I do enjoy hearing from other weavers anywhere in the world, and I have found other weavers to be very friendly people. Thank you so much for watching my videos and for commenting. My dumb cat, Squirticus Maximus, had all his brains in the tip of his tail, which he lost years ago in a serious accident, so now he is just a brainless silly, but very lovable, cat. Andy

curmudgeon66 Thanks heaps Andy :) My name is Sharyn, the other name is made up lol bit like your utube name. My cat is Dillie Dillie, my sons is Octavious tho. I mostly buy second hand yarn on eBay, and am planning to cut up all my old clothes and linnen. Funny to cut up cloth to make cloth, but its all about the doing. Rag weaving is recycling at its best. Thanks again. Shaz (Australian for Sharyn)
@curmudgeon669 жыл бұрын
Shahran Profector Ahhh Shaz, thanks for the explanation. But my utube name is not "made up", I really am an old curmudgeon :) I decided to be one way back when I was in school and first read that word somewhere, I just liked the sound of it. But I had to wait a few years 'cuz who ever heard of a 17 yr old curmudgeon, so now 50 yrs later I am fully qualified to really be one.
@movourneen10 жыл бұрын
i saw that you are using the beater bar but you also are using a stick shuttle to push the weft tighter. why?
@curmudgeon6610 жыл бұрын
Because the warp is so close together that it sticks to itself and the thread next to it. So the shuttle stick just helps me get a really clean shed into which to put the weft. I wish it were not so, because it does slow me down, and maybe I could force it to work without that extra step, but it seems that this helps me get it really nicely open for the weft.
@movourneen10 жыл бұрын
curmudgeon66 Thanks for the explanation. You do have nice tight reps in the rugs.
@Jory8205 жыл бұрын
Found myself struggling with your mixed use of the words 'warp' and 'weft': just when I think I've got it, you reverse your usage. To clarify, the horizontal threads are weft threads, right? And the vertical threads are warp threads?
@73lmargaret10 жыл бұрын
So let me see if I understand this correctly. Am I treating the thick and thin wefts at the edge as if they were warp threads, meaning I am going to follow the same over and under pattern through the end where those two wefts cross at the edge? I have no idea if I said this correctly. Also if there is only one cat and that one cat is spread on both rugs that means the approval rating for the rugs is very very high. If there are other cats further rug lounging sessions will have to be had in order to determine a cat quality control rating for your finished project. Hopefully your approval rating won't be extremely high. Otherwise you may never get to use either of those rugs yourself. Its tuff being owned by a cat.
@curmudgeon6610 жыл бұрын
YES ! You got the over under exactly right. Why could I not have said it so clearly. As for the cats, yes there are two of them, the approval came from Squirticus, him of no moral judgement, while Her Majesty, the other Lady of the House, would not lower herself to even think about approving any of my projects.
@73lmargaret9 жыл бұрын
Well then there is hope you will actually be able to enjoy your woven projects yourself!!
