The fact that people (viewers) prefer wide angle (similar to phones) when consuming content. This lens is key! I was using a sony 16-50mm for all of my client work till I broke it and honestly I didn't realize how much I was using my wide lens compared to my 50mm or 85mm. Yes! The holy trinity!! I thought the same when this lens came out with the idea hmmm is sigma silently doing something here? I absolutely love the 18-50 and have felt that any “trinity” for Sony APS-C is a Frankenstein mixture…which we make it work, but how killer would that be to get a 50-100+mm f/2.8 sigma lens made for Sony APS-C?!

Do you prefer the ultrawide zoom to an f/1.4 wide prime (e.g., sony 15mm, sigma 16mm, viltrox 13mm)? Sigma 10-18 seems more versatile and it's nice and small, but I do like how much light the f/1.4 lets in for night and astro, and how you can get some subject separation with the primes for wide-angle portraiture. Been struggling to decide whether to stick with my prime (sony 15mm) or jump over to the sigma zoom.

Had the viltrox 23mm, those older viltrox design lenses aren't that great. Mine broke after warranty with no way to repair. The newer pro versions have a better build quality.

Quality post, Curtis. Cool train station - nobody else around, nice! Yes, a zoom at the tele end (say, 50 to 150 or 135) would be welcome. When the lens is attached to a full frame camera, what does the EXIF data report? Am thinking that at 10mm on lens divided by 1.5 crop factor the equivalent f/l would be 6.7mm, but the EXIF data might be 10mm. Correct? Cheers!

Ayyy thanks Paul! 🤙 From what I know it just shows the focal length and all the other data. Shutterspeed, aperture etc even when on a Fullframe camera which is just awesome! It's slightly different you times the focal length by 1.5x not divide it. On a Fullframe camera it would be 10-18 and on APS-C it would be a 15-27mm. If my maths is correct. Hope that helps! One great thing about E mount is that Sony allows to use APSC lenses in full frame mode. So you can crop for stabilization in video or crop your composition in photo, so you don't mind the vignette, it's cropped anyway. APSC lenses are cheaper and smaller for the same quality, and it's more fun! There are some prime APSC lenses that covers near all full frame too. So sad that Nikon, Canon and Panasonic L mount don't allow to use full frame mode with APSC lenses, they force APSC mode. I'm seriously thinking in switching to Sony and one reason (among others) would be to use APSC lenses in full frame mode.

Amazing video, but one nitpick: shot at 8:20, you're talking about how compact the setup is but then this insane lens flair makes it impossible to see well throughout almost the entire duration of the clip, I get it flairs are cool, but I wanna see what you're saying

This has me thinking. I own this lens, and have been doing some architectural and real-estate with it on an a6700. I also use it for gimbal stuff on an FX30. I may pick up an a7CII, which I really didn't want to buy another wide lens for (inevitably I'll be doing architectural and real-estate with it as well). I'll be shooting that stuff at 15mm on full-frame, so concerns are less about vignetting (according to your tests). Of course I could shoot in APS-C mode, but I prefer not to if possible. Now Sigma needs to give us a 50mm to whatever zoom to fill this gap. Their 18-50mm f2.8 is a wonder zoom. It makes photography fun. Looking forward to adding this super wide angle zoom to my collection.

7:35 this is not entirely true. The 10-18mm on Full Frame has an equivalent field of view of 15-27mm. It is true that on Sony E-mount you can't get a FF lens less than 16mm that accepts filters. On Nikon and Canon you have the 14-30 and 14-35mm respectively, that go even wider and also accept filters.

I read the tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 is slightly better, the sigma is not very sharp. In general I am a big fan of most APS-C Sigma lenses so I understand the hype, this lens is still quite good afterall.

lots of reviews saying tamron slightly sharper in center and sigma sharper in corners. for an ultrawide zoom that will likely be used a fair amount for landscapes, I'd prioritize edge-to-edge sharpness over center sharpness. I believe the Tamron has more robust weather-sealing, though, so that's one point in its favor.

That's Intresting, from my testing I have no complaints about the sharpness from the Sigma. I haven't personally tested the Tamron so maybe a comparison is needed to see the differences. 😁✌️

Th problem this I that th f2.8 is equal to a 4.2 aperture you don’t get that creamy bokeh. If they made it with a 1.4-1.8 would be a instant buy

This is very true, however you need to take into consideration its an ultra wide lens. So it's ideal for landscape, cityscapes, architectural and real estate photography/videography. So within that we may not really notice depth of field cause of the nature the lenses 10-18 focal length. In terms of Aperture for zoom lenses by default are normally either F2.8 or F4. I ain't much of designer but what I understand it's very difficult to make a zoom lens with a shallower Aperture such as F1.4 or F1.8 without making it much bigger, heavier and more expensive. To help you out, what I'd recommend is looking at ultra wide prime lenses. This way you can get those F1.4 or F1.8 apertures. Hope that helps ✌️

Not sure about that. Mount the lens and put it at say 18mm at a 2.8. Switch from apsc to FF. The field of view changes, not the bokeh right. 2.8 is 2.8. The equivalency conversion is meant to address both FOV and aperture for achieving similar effect. That 18mm 2.8 set in apsc would require a 27mm at f4.5 on a full frame for same field of view/bokeh. 10mm f2.8 apsc would require 15mm f4.5 on a FF lens dig? 2.8=2.8.
