Oh man!!! Too funny. I built an e bike for myself and also am building one for my girlfriend right now and am having the exact same experience as you. Brake rotor rubs, put the tires on the wrong way, spacing is too tight but don't wanna crack an aluminum frame... I sacrificed my lowest gear being smooth on my aluminum frame just so I didn't have to add anymore spacers. Super fun when it's done... the trial and error part tho... a man needs major patients. Keep up the great work!

Oh yeah I've been there many times with these builds, to me giving up 1 gear is totally worth it, most of the time I just go in higher gear and only pedal when I feel like it. I'm sure your gf will be glad you made her one! Once you have an ebike it's really hard to go back to a regular bike 🙌

I'm getting ready to do a 72v build on a full suspension mountain bike frame, the rear strut is taking up triangle space. My remedy will be TWO triangle packs in parallel with a 120amp coupler, I will hang them left and right over the frame with a foam spacer to keep them from interfering with the rear strut. A little more weight, but I will double capacity 😅 Great video, getting me excited about my next build 😁👌

👍 Great build.🤩 I also added a drop-down converter 12v system to my bike , which supplies lights,horn,turn signal and alarm. That was Fun to work out ....IE : running lights with turn signals that work as signal when lights are off . My next project has WiFi stereo system and solar charging.

I will be making a tutorial on how to do it because a lot of people are still just using separate batteries, which is fine, but why not make it cleaner? Hi High Tech, Great fan of you and your channel. I have so many comments and questions but will spare you mostly :-) To me, you precisely capture the hobby as a very creative man. Only a man with your creativity would stop and take a breather from your most complex of all ebike builds to build this bike. Love it. This type of build is more up my alley because its simplier. :-) First my comments and then my question please... My comment is, for those soldering XT60 connectors on their batteries and controllers which is my connector of choice as well for less than 60 amp builds and I only build lower power bikes because I prefer gas motorcycles for faster transport on the road...a tip is....tin the tip of the heavy gage wire, then tin the connector channel..fill it with a small puddle of solder...place the connector with back part of the connector attached for a heat sink in a small soft chuck vise, apply pressure and let the tinned solder melt together. This creates a perfect connection. You can find this procedure on youtube for those interested because these connections almost have to be made on ebike builds. Second comment is and completely agree, rear dropout spacing is always the biggest challenge on rear hub motor builds. Best way in my experience High Tech is...always remove the chain and rear derailleur when fighting with the spacing. Makes it much easier. And lastly, my question please because I deliberately avoid carbon fiber frame builds because I generally prefer mid drive ebikes and carbon fiber bottom brackets don't have the compression strength of Al, Ti or Steel...they crack when applying 50 N-m of BB nut torque for mid drive retention. So my question is....can you describe the spacers you used on the left and right side of your build to properly align the rear brake rotor to the caliper and to offset the rear cassette from the right side drop out so it would clear adequately? How much did you have to stretch the carbon dropout which starts at say 135mm spacing?? to create the proper clearance to get it work in back? Carbon as you likely know in material scientce has a much more abbreviated stress/strain curve compared to Aluminum, Ti or steel which can be bent aka permanently set to a desired rear spacing dimension. Can't do that with carbon fiber, it will crack. What you can do however is 'spring the carbon dropout' to the desired dimension. This makes tire changes more problematic of course because the rear triangle is always under a level of preload. My question is...how much did you have to spring the rear dropout to get it to fit with the right spacing? Thank you very much and for sharing your talent with us.

I never watched a tutorial on the 'right' way to solder up an XT60, but I may have a go, sometimes it's hit or miss with getting it a full solid connection, but I've never had an issue with soldering them, but thank you for the tips 👍 Yes, the more components you remove (caliper, derailleur, etc) the easier it will be to put on the rear hub for sure. I'm not sure how much I had to stretch it, not much, maybe 4-6mm total? It still had 'some' give to it but not a lot, I was afraid of it potentially snapping, but this stuff is incredibly strong, I don't think I could have broken it with my bare hands. Even though the carbon is cool, I prefer steel frames for ebikes as I usually throw a ton of power on them and strength is more important to me than weight. @@hightech-lowlife Thanks for your response about the carbon frame stretch. I own carbon bikes but never tried to mount a rear hub drive on one and was curious about the spacing and stretch. On the soldering front, I personally struggled with soldering XT60 connectors so went out on youtube to find the preferred method because I figured it was doable and I just wasn't using the right technique. My original thought was the trough could be pinched to hold the braided wire when soldering which was wrong. I learned adding solder was a bad idea, the key is to pre tin each side and then join with pressure and heat. This creates a really sound solder joint. Love your builds and your talent and thanks for sharing it with the ebike community.

Very interesting build. Like you've probably already heard, I would definitely use torque arms (Grin Tech or custom ones) if this were my bike but it is your bike. You really know what you're doing with electrical stuff.

Thanks, this frame had steel inserts for dropouts so not the same as pure carbon in this area. Carbon is actually stronger than steel, so I was confident they would hold. Plus the way I ride is not stressful on the components. I will be making a new carbon bike soon, and it will be about 5x the power this has 👍And yes that one will definitely need *torque arms. *Edit: someone was upset that I used a shorthand way of saying torque arms.

Yes of course, you may have to readjust the derailleur, but not always, it depends on the width of the motor. It just depends on how you'll use your bike, if you want to use gears it's not much more difficult to set up for a cassette. 👍

If you lay the bike upside down, installing the rear hub becomes much easier. It also ensures that the wheel is installed evenly.

Try learning to true spokes this way that is an art in itself. Bicycle mechanics in shops are fast like Kung Fu. This is an art form for sure keep practicing. I'm scared of my first build but I'm going to do it and post it asap.

you are right, the spacing is the hardest part. i had the same problem. what i did was, put the thinnest washer i could use to make it a tiny gap for the cassette side. and for the caliper side its trial and error. all bike frame are different i had to use 2 washers on the other side to make my caliper line up,

Oh yeah man, the QS205 is stout, I would only feel comfortable putting that motor on a "traditional" bike frame if I reinforced the dropouts quite a bit. I think you could still do it with carbon, just would need to modify the dropouts to be more robust. This particular frame had steel inserts for the dropouts, but with a QS205 I would want to weld even thicker parts to that to make sure 👍

if you want an alternative to xc90's have a look for QS8-S anti spark connectors, you can use heavier 6AWG cable and 120A+, it's what I'm swapping mine out for

Don't need a carbon frame for an ebike. Some on here say aluminium, but thats not great either. Best, safest frame material is chromolly. Strong and bends long before it brraks catastrophically. Plus the frames are dirt cheap. Something like an old Kona Lavadome frame in Tange Chromolly is perfect for a hardtail conversion. Having said that, I only build full suspension bikes now. Once you've felt how much safer a full travel suspension bike with decent forks and good brakes feels at 40 mph, there is no going back!

Yes, it's true. I think steel is the best material for ebikes, especially with a lot of power. Suspension bikes are the best, I will have 5+ full suspension builds coming up on the channel. They're more challenging because there are less convenient places to put batteries, but with some thinking it can be done without too much stress. 🍻

I have a full suspension (rockshox forks and shock, giant anthem with a 52v battery and a 1500w wheel. I’ve had 42mph out of it. It handles the road and bumps very well, in comparison to my friends hardtail giant with a 48v 1000w kit which is very unforgiving on bumps

Bit late now, but ALWAYS remove the plastic spacer on the brake rotor side, it’s only there to stop the Allen bolts going to deep in the hub until you put your rotor on 👍

Thanks man, this frame is discontinued as it's been a while since this build (actually made in 2019) however you can use the frame of your choosing (one of the perks of doing a DIY build). The seller I purchased this hub motor kit from is still active however they have removed most of their ebike listings, so I cannot directly link as that product page is no longer there. I did purchase this kit on aliexpress however, and if you do a search for 72v 3000w ebike kit, there will be a lot of results. If you do want to build your own ebike, I don't actually recommend just finding some links that someone else gives you as it's possible that there is the same kit or battery sold by a different seller at a significant discount as all of these merchants will compete with each other to give you the best price, so it pays to cross compare the features and offerings of more than one. I will be making a video tutorial on how I find and source parts as I get these questions a lot. Thanks and good luck 👍

Generally just adding a "different / faster" motor is not how you gain power or speed. All of the components of the system are balanced to deliver and handle a certain power level, so having a larger more capable motor won't really do anything unless you have a battery that can output more amps, and of course if you have that then you need a controller that can handle more amps from the battery to feed to the new motor. There are smaller things you can do to increase performance (such as getting a battery with slightly higher voltage, 48 ~ 52V for example) but it will be 10-15% at best. Generally if you want or need significantly more power, it's a requirement to go with all components upgraded, unless you've already somehow acquired a bike that is already imbalanced to begin with.

Great video! I see your disc brake mount was rubbing on your rotor and you fixed it by removing the spacer on the hub motor disc rotor. I am having this exact same issue however I already removed my spacer on the hub motor. Yet the disc brake mount is still rubbing on the rotor. any recommendations? At this point I'm considering filing down the disc brake mount.

Thanks man! The first thing I would check is if your dropouts have the correct amount of washers/spacers between the motor and dropout, most likely you need to add more spacers which will more your dropout further from the hub, thus giving you more space for your caliper 👍 If you have the correct spacing and cannot add more room - check out if there are any other bracket adapters for your caliper size to space it out even further. The brackets have a bit of play but if you're maxed out to one side and still rubbing you may need a different adapter. Good luck!

Screw terminals work just fine, only a bit less convenient if you have to disconnect it with much speed. I usually leave enough slack to change tires without needing to disconnect the hub though 👍

You will need basic tools like an allen key set (for building the bike itself) and some crescent wrenches or socket set (metric). If you are building a mid drive, you may need more specialized tools for removing the bottom bracket depending on what frame you have. Most likely you won't need to solder anything if you bought the battery with a compatible connector to your kit, although they do sell adapters, and you can also just crimp on connectors.

thats pretty much what I want to build for my next one, minus the carbon frame, I would probably use aluminium. I don't see too many channels making bikes like this so its hard to know what parts I would need, particularly the choice of motor and whether it will be limited to its rated watts even with a high power battery and controller.

I just built a 1500w hub-motored ebike, and due to the scale of the consequences of running a high-power motor without torque arms, (dropouts rounding out, making the frame completely useless, losing the wheel at 35mph, etc etc) I am running two torque arms, one on either side. It cost me $15 bucks off amazon, and an extra 20 minutes to install on my first try. The potential cost savings is too enormous to ignore.

​@@kwadkrazy6078 I've built many (13+) "regular (non enduro/moto)" bikes 1500W to 3500W on steel frames without torque arms without issues. With an aluminum frame it's much more of a necessity (asking for it/tempting fate), for steel it depends more on the frame (and also your controller and controller settings). The frame isn't useless if you round out the dropouts, you just stick a giant thick piece of steel and weld it to the frame and make your own new dropouts that won't break or need torque arms. Everyone is free to make the choices they want to make for their own bike, if torque arms make you feel safer please put them on (put two pair on, or three). My recommendations are always to do and use whatever methods and accessories that suit your own personal goals, feelings, beliefs, etc. I just go off of my own personal experience, if I was rounding out dropouts and cracking frames left and right, believe me I would be putting torque arms on everything, but that hasn't been the case. Maybe I'm just lucky, I'm not sure, but that's a lot of evidence towards the contrary of what so many people are telling me as a "must". If it makes you guys feel better I did put torque arms on a new build (video soon), but the truth is it was completely unnecessary.

@@kwadkrazy6078 It's all good man, I'm all for people bringing their anecdotal experience, ideas and thoughts, but it's also important (at least to me) to challenge those ideas and beliefs (especially my own). I don't think torque arms are a bad idea, and certainly won't harm anything by installing them (aside from $20 lighter and a bit more fiddling when having to change your tire). My apologies if I came off rude, I've just been told things like this many times so far and I question the validity of the persons understanding when stating things as fact when I believe the truth requires a more nuanced view. If you want to share your experiences with others to help them, that's great and I encourage that, it's genuinely helpful. The things I don't believe are helpful are people just regurgitating things that others have said and speaking it as if that is their own belief through personal discovery, or talking from a position of authority with no foundational basis for that position nor authority. I'm not saying you're doing this or have done it, just explaining my viewpoint so you understand. I will make a video on the subject of torque arms, just because I think it's worth talking about and even if people don't agree with me, I'll at least have a video explaining why I build my bikes the way I do. I don't have a full parts list because this frame is no longer sold (discontinued). However, you can use just about any frame you'd like, and if you pick a carbon one, you can use that. The seller I purchased the motor kit from is no longer selling any motor kits, but there are many available. This is 3000W, so if you want the same performance, there are many available. It's hard to provide links to exact products as they change quite often from the sellers and are either updated, changed, or discontinued. Same goes for batteries, this is a 20AH pack 72V. Usually when I make a new build I just search for what I want as I can't even rely on the sellers and links I've used in the past personally. Also, one seller you purchased from may be marking things up at a later date, so it's a better habit to search for what is available at the time, and do a comparison to get the best price. 👍 Part of the fun of a DIY build is sourcing and finding the parts you want, as you can tailor your build to exactly what you want. Had the same issues with the dropout and the power wire getting rubbed by the screws on the disc brake. This kit is kind of a pain at first. Mine is the 2000w and I'm curious what controller you are using as an upgrade

Bigger wheels? No, most frames are designed for a certain sized wheel. If you enlarge the wheels they will interfere with the fork/rear swingarm/frame. I think you mean fatbike tires? They are not interchangable without extensive modifications. If you want a bike with big tires/wheels start with a frame that accommodates them.

I may do a video on pushing a controller like that, the only thing is that most of those cheaper low power controllers are not designed for the heat output, so while it may work for a short while I'm skeptical of the longevity of slamming the mosfets over and over without adequate cooling. I suppose you could integrate a fan or something like that, but never attempted yet. Could be a fun project though 👍 I haven't had any issues with heat from the motor or controller, but I also don't abuse my stuff much so could be just my riding style. Thanks for watching man! Carbon is stronger than steel 👍Mid drive motors are lighter than hub motors typically, but weight shouldn't really be a concern at all in regards to the integrity of the frame (beyond specific things like hub motors and dropouts, but that wouldn't be applicable here).

1:11 - People that give you crap about modifying Walmart bikes obviously doesn't know the difference between the cheap Walmart bikes and the better ones, for example the carbon Hyper frame has better hydraulic brakes and upgraded shifter components which make it a decent bike... Some of parts on the other hand are crap like the tires/tubes, bearings, headset, grips, cranks/pedals/chain. Parts like that are pretty much the first thing people upgrade so that's why they have cheap parts on them... Then after that it's usually the shocks/forks and maybe wheels then you have a really good bike for a decent price point.

I've ridden trails, street, and skatepark all on this bike. I have replaced almost every part on the bike. Some stuff has broken: derailleurs, wheels, shifter. Everything else were upgrades. The only ramaing original parts are the frame, bottom bracket, and crank set. BB and cranks will be upgraded soon. The geometry isn't great but that is really the only draw back to how good a value this bike is. Even after all the money I've spent upgrading it's still a more affordable bike than I'd have bought from a proper bike shop, especially with full suspension. I've also learned a lot about bikes working on it over the years. It really is one of the best perchases I've ever made and hopefully it'll still be around for another 7 years.

You'll have to do more than just get a new battery, because you won't want to put 72v to a controller that is designed for 48v 👍 It depends on what you're trying to do? Just go faster? How fast is the bike now?

@@killshot6933 If you get a new controller and battery then you can go with 72v, depending on the motor it should hold up but maybe not, it depends on how many amps you're pumping through it. to go 45 you'll need roughly 3-3.5KW of power. 50A @ 72v is about 3500W, so you'll want a battery that can output 45-50A (preferably RMS and not peak) and a controller that can also handle that 👍

Much appreciated 👍 If you only need 30mph, I would go with a 1500-2000W motor, you will save money and you won't ever use the extra power of a 3000+ watt motor. 1500W is more than enough for speed and acceleration, everything on top of that is just extra. Use the extra money saved to invest in the best battery you can. That's my recommendation 🍻

I just don't use the brake levers that come with the kit, you lose out on the motor cutout, but I've never needed it. A lot of these style bikes have the shifter integrated into the brake levers anyway, so there really isn't a way to use the kit levers 👍

@@TheKvaPAje It depends on your kit and what it has, this kit (and a lot of others) don't have regen, so it's not a big deal. If you have regen then you should be able to set it on a thumb throttle, that would be my recommendation 👍
