I did everything with my long travel tacoma in 2wd that I did in 4wd. Some places it took 13 tries though...shell reef doing a half hill climb and disappear and come back down the chutes .black mountain poway up the roads close to the glider path...devil's slide to the top numerous times up the spine . Almost made the drop off fish Creek when it was a drop off...before wannabe s stacked rocks. Competition hill..oldsmobile...I kept the transfer case..but yanked the front end ..before toyota offered a prerunner I built one with real shocks and locker and kept the transfer case .that's the secret ..low range. And you need. To air down unless your a race truck ..that is rolling resistance and grip .low range gears and air pressure. Long travel and a skilled driver.. I used to dune it with 31x10.5 on pizza cutters..the beige one back in the day at glamis .I used to glow stick my wheels so everyone could see my fronts weren't turning and the rear were..no one had that back then and I used to catch a lot of shit...cause I made stuff look hard ..then i would say I'm 2wd and people would argue with me till I walked them over and showed them i had no front differential..then it was DUDE this fucking guy climbed this hill or this fucking guy is out duning a 2wd.. Duning a 2wd on pizza cutters. Low range forward ..never low range reverse .... lol.. Pick your line before you come down the hill to go back up...you cannot get out of the throttle..so no traffic...made it hard at compe at night..so much traffic ..not any more ..not even allowed to be there. Assholes. I can remember people's faces when they were stuck and asked me for help and we yelled 2wd as we charged past them..2 liter of coke ..pour out 1 liter. .fill with Jack...no food needed for 8 hours or more ..lol...

If I lowered my tires down to 20psi. I'd go up the hill easily. I don't know how those guys cant make it up that rockyish obstacle uphill. 1. They didn't lower the tire pressure down trying that obstacle. 2 there too heavy body weight wise, 3. theres too much torque on the welded diff f150 prerunner, and the open diff 2500. Its open diff. The land cruiser Lexus version on the other has A trac which has traction control and its lighter than the 2 2wd trucks. Lighter vehicles make a big difference offroading... Traction control too.

A 2wd with a locker will out perform a 4wd with 2 open diffs any day of the week!

This video just proved that wrong on the hill climb

@@alexirwin2093 but the Lexus has a- track. While technically having open diffs, it managed the brakes so it chooses which wheels to spin. A regulars 4x4 truck with open diffs wouldn't have made it

The answer is yes. I have a 2wd GMC Canyon and I rally the hell out of it Offroad.

I appreciate the work you put into this. Great knowledge base, interesting but applicable vehicle choice, terrain choice was a style/type I think we all can relate to. Outcome, well, pretty much what I expected, but, driving home the philosophy that common sense prevails! Well presented, good camera work, great vid/edit. YT got the reccomend thing right this time, new sub, looking forward to the next one.

Damnit. This deserved a like right away! I have a 2wd but the prerunner Offroad is something I’m in. People don’t understand different builds.

Man uses a 2wd off-road truck. Pre-Runner drivers: *well of course I know him. He's me.*

It would be awesome if you have added a 2wd Ridgeline in the comparison. Would love to see how FWD vs RWD truck compare in the off-road. Also Ridgeline has more chances of conquering that first hill, if it will go backwards.

Maybe you should try adding weight to the rear not removing it. Who could have guessed you don't have good traction. A limited slip 3.73 or 4.10 axle, decent off road or all terrain tires aired down and a couple of sand bags in the back and a little run up is enough for basic and some mild off roading

I've owned 2 vehicles that had 4 wheel drive, but it didn't work for a period of time. First was my 92 s10 blazer. The 4x4 didn't seem to make that big of a difference because it had a limited slip rear diff and plenty of weight on the back. It was pretty good off-road and even when I fixed the 4 wheel drive, I seldom needed it because it would either do fine in 2wd, or 4wd wouldn't help. The second vehicle is a Toyota tundra, and it makes a lot more of a difference due to a lack of weight on the back, but honestly, decent tires make a bigger difference than 4x4 in my opinion, and if I load the tundra down with firewood or something, it's very good off-road without 4x4

Read the title. My thought HELL YEAH FULL SEND IT. Just have a buddy with a truck to come get you 60% of the time. This is coming from a guy who beat the daylights his two wheel drive open diff and 32inch at tires with a leveling kit.

Watched this video because I am close to purchasing a C20 1985 but it’s 2WD because it’s affordable and can’t find a 4WD from 1985 that’s not a house payment

A truck has so little weight on the back wheels - It seems silly that they're even used offroad, where a Jeep or Land Cruiser has better balance. If you have 2WD, it's better that they be the front wheels. My 1985 Jetta with upgraded front springs and all-season tires did a lot of off-roading back when most trucks were 2WD and were used to carry stuff.

Its funny, 99% of Trophy Trucks are 2WD and run through some of the gnarliest terrain in the world in places with names like Baja and Mojave, etc. They don't seem to have much problems other than their width. 39" and bigger tires and 800+ horsepower helps.

2wd raptor in the thumbnail. I know a lot of guys with gen 1s like me that go long travel and have to go 2wd. If youre jumping and hauling ass through everything a 2wd pre runner is great, but as soon as you need to slow down in the soft sand or mud youre screwed. 4wd is better for slow speeds but 2wd is also possible. Just havr buddys, bubba ropes, and winches. I used to offroad a 2006 2wd tundra and it went almost everywhere. Now ive got the 4wd raptor and i can go more places with safety and confidence, especially in the ice and mud

When your young and stupid any vehicle can be an offloaded. Which is why my 2005 grand am didn't make 100k before I blew the heads and how I managed to blow my 3spd automatic transmission in 90 model Chevy 2500. Nowadays I'm just a workaholic father who only goes offroading maybe once a year.
