i know you don't like to carry a bunch of stuff...butt.... after breaking the tire linkage, which you WELDED, abnd this broken tie rod, which could have been WELDED enabling them to self recover, and how many other similar recoveries..... maybe you should look into carrying a suitcase welder, and a generator/power inverter big enough to power it. might save you from being out real late a time or two.

The key to pulling from mud is not working against inertia. Inertia is the resistance of the change of motion-- so a heavy truck already has a lot of inertia anyway, plus the suction of the mud-- which neither one of those likes to accelerate quickly. So the be secret is pulling slowly, which gives the mud time to release. The mud almost acts like a "non-Newtonian" fluid. Meaning the faster that you try to pull against it, the more it acts like solid ground; but the slower you pull against it, the more it will flow and act like water.

I have that same heat gun at 8:33! Works wonders on vinyl liners in the cold to install pools in November. Back before there were purpose built kinetic ropes we used timed-out bungee jumping cords. On the beach in South Padre Island, Texas there were plenty to find. They were obviously much stretchier than a recovery rope. The technique was to attach both ends, and stretch the rope till you start to bury the recovery vehicle. Then you wait till the stock vehicle pops out on its own.

Matt. Great video as always... At 17:17 you told us that if the suction makes the vehicle you're trying to extract feel like it's chained to a tree, then a kinetic rope is NOT the solution. However... earlier you fed us a "golden nugget" of insight - that kinetic ropes keep pulling if you stop moving forward. That stored tension keeps working. So really, if all one had was a KR, and no winch, one could use that insight to safe advantage... just put some decent tension on it and wait. As you said, over time, it could break the suction.

Excuses or Educating? For many a year I used a 10k lbs tow strap for everything watching videos like Matt's I learned that's a no-no. Now I have a tow strap for easy no kinetic energy needed pulls/tows because it's lighters and quicker but I pull out the proper stuff when needed. I have a recovery strap, bought it before recovery ropes were a thing and I have a recovery rope, and a winch. Even if you do things right, things can go wrong. I once had a F350 recovery hook come flying at me once pulling him out of a snow bank... whomever installed it needs to be shot.. 6 friggin spot welds to hold it on. Luckily I had plenty of rope and run way I move back and to the side so it could drop without hitting my truck.

Wheres Trevor and Tucker?
@JohnFL
@JohnFL Жыл бұрын
Trevor is no longer part of the MORR crew, he got a job closer to home climbing communications towers (with the proper fall protection gear, of course). We miss him on MORR though. Tucker was in the video where the Morrvair broke down. That was right before SEMA

A 2WD truck with an open rear? Damn That thing could get stuck in wet grass. The fact he lifted it seems crazy, must be a mall crawler normally. Kudos for actually trying to off road it I guess, but he needs a better starting platform.

Love the way you include the dogs. How about a Peanut point of view with a camera on her collar one day. Part of the team!

Need a harness on the dogs back and epic motion stabilization, but I have to agree that the dogo's happily running would make great B-roll.

I actually messaged Trevor about it and he was kind enough to get back with me. He has moved on, and is now working closer to home climbing communications towers (he has ample fall protection equipment of course). We sure will miss him though.

With the Winch removed, are you thinking of adding a front landing pad like Rory has for supporting broken fronends & longer 4 place razors? You could add reciever pocket further up & remove it when it's in the way or not needed, I know how you like to have versatility & light weight. I added quick electrical plugs on both ends for winches & get used all the time with my extra long jumper cables. Best move ever & I don't chew up my military battery ends with the std cable clamps.
