I’m so happy that PCOS was mentioned here. It is rarely diagnosed/mentioned. As a person who has it, the weight struggle is too much. I have come to terms like the guy, that this is how my body is and I shouldn’t focus on it as much. With this, I’ve found myself being happier.

I find it very interesting how people keep talking about it because I wonder like... has medication not worked for you (or anyone else)? I have PCOS myself and as soon as I got put on metformin, all the weight that I had gained over the years just melted off. Then again, I wasn't born overweight and only started gaining weight in my late teens, so maybe it was because of my genetics being more for "lean PCOS"... not sure.
@mariavittoriazocche

@@justahugenerd1278 I have PCOS too, was diagnosed at 22 because, after quitting the birth control pill, I gained over 10kg in like 6 months, my period stopped for a year and I couldn't manage to lose any of that weight. I, too, started to take metformin (I took it for 3 years), and it really helped. Although, what helped the most was the help of an awesome nutritionist, who helped me understand what my body needed, and working out. From what I've gathered, from my doctors and acquaintances that have PCOS too, I've learnt that PCOS comes with a variety of symptoms, like difficulty to lose weight and ease to gain weight, cystic acne, body hair growht, infertility or difficulty to get pregnant, tendency to have insuline-resistance or diabetes, irregular period and so on. So I guess that every body responds to treatments differently, not everyone takes metformin, it doesn't work for everyone. I too had to deal with the "helplessness" that came with the diagnoses, I honestly though at one point that life was gonna be hard forever, I had to learn, to document myself, to teach myself that my body is the only one I'll ever have, and as so, I have to treat it with the respect it deserves. It took a really long time though; now I'm the best version on myself, phisically and mentally, but it was definitely a struggle.

@@mariavittoriazocche Gotcha! So I guess it's just the luck of the draw. To be fair, I'm also on testosterone right now (I'm a trans man) and I often wonder if that greatly aided in my ability to lose the weight. After all, it ups your metabolism and promotes muscle gain and fat loss. I wonder if I hadn't been on T I might not have lost the weight. Who knows? I wish people would study this stuff more!

@JustAHugeNerd Some medications don’t work for some people. I was diagnosed at 22 yrs old (I’m 23) and was put on metaformin. While it helped with my hunger cravings, my period got even more heavier, and wasn’t losing any weight. Metformin is not FDA approved, yet it is recommended by doctors. I am currently on Inositol, which is a powder supplement (and is FDA approved) and it has been helping me a lot. Again, not everyone with PCOS can take the same thing because every body is different, but I’m glad you found something that works for you :))

The “men don’t have feelings” is really toxic. It encourages people to think that they can comment on a man’s weight and think it’s ok cause it won’t hurt their feelings. I’ve seen it with my husband when he gained a bit of weight and it DOES hurt him. Just as much, if not more than it hurts me. And don’t come and say “it was a joke”. I find it so odd that they keep asking about exercise habits and food -- like how much is that going to help you when you have the person right there and can see their body composition? I wish they had a greater variety of body types, like some super fit beastly guy or woman in the same weight range, because you can weigh a lot when you have a lot of muscle. People never accurately guess my weight because I'm tall and heavier than I look (which I don't care about at all). Just might've been nice, and a little trickier to guess, if they mixed it up a bit.

Yikes... I could never. As someone who is 5'2 and once 200lbs... I lost 67lbs and at 133lbs developed an eating obsession ( severe calorie restriction). Then had another baby and now I'm between 155-161lbs. Even though I am not near 200lbs.. that's all I can see myself as. No one talks about how you can lose the weight but your image of yourself doesn't change
@MHGFTW
@MHGFTW Жыл бұрын
Lose weight by small adjustments to what you eat. Switch out sugary drinks with water or diet versions. You can still have the occasional sugary drink, but it's all about portion sizes, and treating yourself in a balanced way, while also eating healthy foods. At 5'2, 130lbs is by no means underweight. It's very much a healthy weight, at the top of the range though. At 5'2 160lbs is overweight, bordering on being obese. I'd speak to your doctor about how to make small changes in your diet. There's no need to do any kind of severe calory restriction. It's all about small changes you can live with on the long term. Often people are having more than 1 serving size without knowing. Being aware of it is often a big step...

(this is what people call fat-phobic, but if you want to read carefully I would appreciate it) I think the goal of the current "body positivity" push is more focused on making fatter people feel better being fatter, not primarily about health or appreciating all bodies, which is unfortunate. The fact that nobody on the panel said, I'm happy that i'm losing weight or gaining weight to reach a goal kind of illustrates the point. The guy who lost the weight already did what he wanted to do in the past. Everyone has the power to make themselves into what they want to be. It's harder and easier for some based on their body. This is a more positive, inclusive view of weight because it includes the spectrum of all people. BP IMO should be about giving people the tools to exercise their power. What BP says from my perspective is don't set a personal goal which includes your weight because if you don't meet the goal you will be disappointed. Simply let your weight exist as a result of your choices. It's a very nurturing and empathetic stance which ignores personal accountability and agency. I think this is why skinny people are ignored.

if you're eating healthy foods then its just a quantity issue. Weight is driven by calorie quantity, so 3000 calories of healthy foods is just as bad weight-wise as 3000 calories of pure sugar. PCOS messes with your hormones and reduces your body's metabolic rate (among other things) so you'd likely have to reduce the quantity of food you eat, regardless of what you're eating. Yes you would probably be eating less than comparable people of your sex/weight/height/muscle mass but unfortunately that is the nature of your condition.

@@aIysssa I’m not worrying about it. And many people survive breast cancer. I’m of course happy I have - so far, as triple-positive b.c. can return as metastases even decades later. And, yes, ordinary worries don’t forever go away post-cancer.

I think this video helped my internalized fatphobia. Like sure, I am not happy with my weight and I think losing 30 pounds would make me a lot happier (as well as healthier, despite most of my health issues not being from my weight). The video has given me some sort of hope in learning to at least like my body.
