I have been bored shooting my 10/22 and my way too to expensive ruger PRC at 100 yards. I'm testing at 400yrds and 500yrds. SK long range ammo has been very impressive. However my last case of Norma has me dialed in Sub minutes. I shoot with rules, that 1"@100yrd targets. I'm just now have been sub minute @ 500yrd. 4.5" groups. Weather permits. Just take the big spring out of the trigger to get an 8oz trigger. Nothing wrong with the chassis. BTW Shilen makes a nice barrel for the RPR. The bottom of the bolt needs to be chamfered a touch to stop shaving the next bullet up in the magazine. A Harrell's tuner really helped with groups.

This is my "same old comment" I always make. I sort my cheapest ammo to the best, I find sorted ammo especially the cheap stuff shows better results, I believe 22lr, not so much the good stuff, is about the least regulated of all ammo made, ie mass produced equals less quality control, with exceptions of course Equipment used: RavenEye Custom shell holder (1/2" throw maximum) Digital Indicator .0005" Set of Indicator tips, I use the eraser sized one not the point that typically comes on most Digital/dial indicators Happy sorting, I typically sort into 8 lots of rim thickness .038 .0385 .039 .0395 .040 .0405 .041.0415 .042. etc

Some I clean far to often, and some I wait till the accuracy declines, then I might just try cleaning out the carbon ring. Then if the accuracy don’t come back I’ll clean everything. 10/22s I clean quite a bit more. Maybe every 300 rounds. Hard to keep track of the maintenance of 15 .22s. That’s why I have a boroscope.

My Ruger RPRR factory was only so so . Nothing remarkable . So I change the barrel to Lilja . My favorite barrel maker . Change to timney trigger too . And arca rail . SWFA SS 12X scope . It is a very good rifle now . Unfortunately RPRR rear stock Is somewhat flexible . Not much I can do about it . I got bitten by Rimfire bug real bad . Start out with 10/22 LVT model end up with all 3 model of original LVT . A full KIDD 10/22 built . RPRR with Lilja . CZ 457 LRP , and CZ457 with Lilja . And a Vudoo V22 . We lived in the golden age of Rimfire . It is incredible how much high end choice we have right now . I’m afraid to browse Anschutz or Tikka or Bergara line up . Try my friend RimX . Have to slap myself not to get one built 😅 I have to keep on reminding myself to just shoot what I have .

I agree with the comment on using 10 round mags vs. the 15s. Another mod you may want to consider is adding the a kidd stainless steel plunger and extra power spring to give more consistent mag lock up. Also tune your mags by polishing the bottom of the feed lips and back off the rotary spring preload 2-3 flats. These will make feeding smother, lighter and more consistent.

Don, this is so coincidence and perfect timing, and you confirmed what I was wondering lately....THANK YOU!!! I was at my range today shooting my CZ 457 VMTR and shooting from a brick (packaged as a brick of 500 from a reputable online dealer that I'm sure you've heard of and I've bought from before of various match ammo) of Lapua-LR and also noticed the same... and this is not my first time buying a brick of Lapua-LR (I've bought other bricks of LLR before)... I would have one box out of the brick that I had really great luck with. Open another and it shot kinda "loose" groups at 50 yds. Figured it was time for a couple of patches down the barrel. Same box would still shoot "loosley" even after giving it about 5-10 fouling shots after patching...(1 rimfire blend and two dry patches followed..... and yes, I know how to keep the "Carbon Ring" in check (because I'm OCD about that 🤣) I would eventually open the next box of LLR and start shooting from it ....and it seemed like my MTR had cured itself all of a sudden. 5 shot groups would be really tight (like .5 to .75 inch groups at 50 yards, almost one ragged hole).... A few times I would just sit back and look at the rifle sitting there in the rest and ask myself, WTH just happened..... 🤣🤣🤣. And I noticed this from just getting to the end of one box (of 50) and have to break open the next box of 50. Whether I patch the barrel or not.... Fouling shots or not... usually after a cleaning it only takes "my MTR'" about 3-5 fouling shots and its dialed in at 50yds As I think back, I think this "may" have occurred with other "Bricks " of "match ammo" I've purchased, come to think of it... 🤔
@RimfireSS
@RimfireSS Жыл бұрын
This is the age old problem with .22 ammunition, well if you think about it center fire is the same but serious shooters can reload and make sure everything is the same and there able to get the results they want. This is why people sort and weight and measure there .22 to try and make it more consistent. And I see why, because it’s frustrating as hell when you get ammunition that shoots lights out then the next box don’t. Your paying the long dollar so that don’t happen but even the expensive stuff will shoot like crap from time to time. Trick is to find a ammunition that shoots the most consistent and shoots the best in your rifle. If that’s even possible. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Don, Thanks for the GREAT video , as ALWAYS. I would be curious to see if weighing these ammo out would have made any difference? I have found my groups to be more consistent, when I weigh out the flyers. Not sure ammo of this price and quality would have any differences, but the targets say different. I have a problem with paying 23+ for a box of .22 LR ammo, anyway. And to see those quality rifles shoot those groups with that high quality ammo, I think someone would be getting an e-mail or a snail mail letter. Thanks much AGAIN !!!!!!

It’s funny you say that, I was out shooting today working on another video, I was shooting Lapua super long range, and I’ve had so much trouble with inconsistent charges on this ammunition that I weighed it all out and sorted by rim thickness as well. @@RimfireSS Don - that is so sad to hear that. When I hear Lapua I would think quality and that ammo you are using is 23+ a box, and for that kind of money and just by the fact its all weighed and sorted, tells me there is something WRONG. @@RimfireSSsuper interesting to note that, was considering doing that myself. An additional option would be chronying each shot, comparing the velocity variation with the flyers. For weight sorting, a half grain less bullet might be equalised by a half grain extra charge and so not show on the scales but result in velocity variation for sure.

Compare apples to apples. You changed the barrel of the RPR. Leave them both stock. I have both of those rifles. Both like different ammo. When shooting the ammo that both rifles prefer, the test is more fair. Changing the barrel of the RPR is no longer in "my opinion" a Ruger. He did compare apples to apples in a way. In the video he stated he can shoot the stock trigger in the Ruger equally as well. This test perfectly explains why I got myself a CZ 457 MTR 20",it shoots great out of the box. A friend of mine bought a RPR, and he had to invest a small fortune to get it to shoot. And still my CZ shoots better. A small side note, the barrel on the RPR was incorrectly installed when he bought the rifle.

Yes and no. He was making some adjustments to better hit near the point of aim, between groups. As far as I can tell, he wasn't making adjustments for wind during the 5 shot groups, but probably trying to time shots to the most consistent conditions. I do agree, if you are making wind / elevation adjustments during the string of fire, it isn't a valid group. He wasn't shooting for bulls, he was shooting groups, and trying to keep the groups located for reference to the nearest 1"dot, I really enjoyed his video, thanks for the comment. edit. - he clearly showed when he was making adjustments to his scope, so yes, if just looking at before / after photos, you would definitely see a POI change not knowing adjustments were made

On the Ruger I noticed that every time you had a shot that opened up the group it looked and sounded like a rough feed. The bolt hung slightly before chambering the round...maybe your deforming the nose slightly?
@RimfireSS
@RimfireSS 9 ай бұрын
I watched the video again and didn’t notice that, I’m sure it was the ammo. But, out of all my rifles the Ruger is the roughest feeding by far. And it’s not the action, without a loaded magazine inserted the action feels pretty good. Those 15 round mags have a lot of spring pressure and that rough feeling is the bolt dragging the round that’s going into the chamber across the round beneath it, it creases the case and the bullet. I’m actually surprised it shoots as well as it does. I probably should have been using the 10 rounders as the spring pressure is adjustable and when adjusted properly it feels much better.

It seems that .22LR precision shooting rifle is moot because if $25 a box of 50 ammo can't be consistent, no upgrade or bazillion dollar rifle matters. This Lapua is supposedly the best there is and still it cannot be consistent. The CZ cost's twice what the Ruger PRS costs and still no better if ammo is at fault. They just opened a Academy sports 20 minutes away and I'm off for a Ruger PRS on sale at $429 Black Friday!
@RimfireSS

Well….. that’s not a factory Ruger either.. and the better the rifle the better it will shoot a wider range of ammunition. Unfortunately even with the best ammunition .22 can be inconsistent. But as far as the Lapua L/R being the best there is that simply is not true. And it’s not $25 a box. It’s $15 so good luck with that Ruger, most people are disappointed.
