It happened in Berlin: According to legend, Kadir Nurman was the first to put meat into a flatbread in 1972 and invented the variant of the doner kebab that is so popular in Germany

Shawarma is a Levantine (Lebanese) dish similar to Döner Kebab. Often based on the same types of meat (mutton, lamb, veal, chicken), the difference lies in the preparation of the meat and the different sauces and spices used (although this may blend into each other in diasporic Berlin). Shawarma meat is usually marinated over night and served in self-baked pita as opposed to the flat bread used for Kebab. Another similar dish from the Eastern Mediterranean region is the Greek Gyros (which, however, is often grilled pork, Greece being a Christian country).

So similar dish from different countries, their own twist so to speak.

@@dananna8614 Pretty much. It's not by accident that these dishes all come from the same general region (Balkans to Middle East) which at various times in history even was part of the same political entity (i.e. Byzantine Empire and Ottoman Empire).

I'm a huge fan of Jalapeños, yet not in my Döner. I prefer dried chili flakes and most importantly lots of sumac with it. You have to ask for these additions though.
