It's gotta be tough for Ed to get comfortable with it being your house and your rules when he's struggling with memory and feels like he's just living life the same as he always did and supervised swimming seems like was a rule he always had since the little neighbor boy. You all are so patient with him and I love to see how you just calmly repeat as needed and reassure him that it's because you all love him and are concerned about his well-being and health. Sweet to see grown children honor and respect their elderly parents. Thank you for sharing these vulnerable moments with us and helping us all understand what it's like both caregiving for someone with dementia and having dementia. Your videos do a lot of good. 💙

When do they calmly repeat? They sound annoyed to me every single time especially Danielle…
@DrBellaLJ
@DrBellaLJ 10 ай бұрын
Grandpa Ed has significant hearing loss, so repeating something louder is sometimes required. Louder isn’t meaner. When my dad didn’t have his hearing aids in, it would be really frustrating because you would have to repeat yourself several times. I know that on the second or third time repeating something, what I said often became truncated and much louder. It could be frustrating, and my dad did not have dementia! I think that the family exercises incredible patience and love when communicating with Ed. With my dad, my level of patience definitely improved over time. My dad passed from leukemia, and I wish I still had to repeat myself to my dad. My son once asked his Pop for a toothpick, and my dad’s response was “you want pizza?” We would laugh about it, because he was so ready to get his grandson pizza (and we still don’t know how he heard “pizza” instead of the word toothpick). The most frustrating part for me was that he had these super high tech expensive hearing aids that would profoundly improve his hearing to near perfect, but he would routinely just not put them in.

I commend you and Danielle for caring about your father's exposure to the sun. Your motives are pure, and born of love. However, I feel compelled to agree with your father on this one. He's an excellent life guard, who can call you if Danielle gets in trouble (heart event, severe cramping, etc.). He needs vitamin D from sunshine. Put some #50 Waterbabies on his face, arms and legs, and let him enjoy the important role he fills. You're arguing about something which is a waste of time. Appreciate his concern, and let him enjoy protecting a member of his family. He hasn't got the number of years remaining, it took for him to develop the skin cancers in the first place. Your role now is to do whatever possible to help him feel like a contributing member of the family. This is your golden opportunity to shine.

Pops is a priceless gem. He wanted to make sure a precious member of his family, was safe at the cost of his own safety. That is the ultimate act of love, bless his selfless heart. Such a caring sweetheart ❤ UK.
