I think there's this popular misconception that Taylor either hates men or serial dates guys who treat her poorly. In reality, nearly every album she has is about *one* love interest each. Not every song is about a different guy. I guess you can see it as the album itself will be mourning/celebrating the relationship, and can be used as a tool to navigate and make sense of what happened. Some songs are fictitious (Stay, Stay, Stay), some songs are about the things her friends went through (Happiness), some are historical (Starlight), etc.

THIS. Each album is the story of a period in her life, usually one relationship and maybe the ending of the one before or beginning again with another. It's a reflection and snapshot of her life in that era and each song is a chapter (I think 1989 actually shows this the best, red is a close second though).

@im_azraelle Жыл бұрын
yes Taylor Swift has had a lot of relationships, but so do a lot of young people. they just don't write and sing about it publicly. Red is mostly a sad breakup album mostly because she did go through a bad breakup while writing the album (same for the next album, 1989). most if not all of the breakup songs on this album are about the same guy, not multiple ones. and there *are* romantic or hopeful songs on the record like State of Grace, Stay Stay Stay, Treacherous, Begin Again, Run, Everything Has Changed, Message in a Bottle, or songs unrelated to relationships at all like The Lucky One, Nothing New, Ronan, and Forever Winter - which is about a friend who was suicidal, not a relationship. and as Taylor herself once said: "if guys don't want me to write bad songs about them, they shouldn't do bad things." is it possible for every guy she dates to be the problem? yeah but it's not likely, okay sure i'll give you guys that one. but Taylor also has songs and lyrics where she takes accountability in her relationships. Back To December from Speak Now was all about her swallowing her pride (literally in the lyrics) and admitting she's the one who messed the relationship up and she regretted it because he treated her so well. there's a song from her album Lover where she is outright admitting to something she did wrong and apologizing. she also got out of a 6 year relationship fairly recently. they were together from 2016-2022/2023. because of that relationship, she had very very few breakup songs on some of her more recent albums (Reputation and Lover) and more love songs. she writes purely from her own experiences (sometimes the experiences of those around her) and if heartbreak is what she's feeling then why not let her channel that? with that said, you guys seem to not be crazy about really poppy songs, so Reputation and Lover may not be totally up your alley. but if you're wanting love songs then surely you'll appreciate the topics and lyrics. :)

Red is THE break up album haha also the reason why some of vault songs were left out was because there were too many break up song, so it makes sense we end up with a lot of them in Taylors version. But if you want happy Taylor I recomend Lover. Love your reactions
@mbb131 Жыл бұрын
26:35 I think hurtful moments and painful relationships are more formative and impactful than easy, fun ones. I think Taylor, along with many other artists, use their art as coping mechanism and to process, you don’t typically have to cope or process positive experiences. But ultimately, Red is a breakup album. And vault tracks are almost always sad, and they were left in the vault to not be redundant in an album full of sad songs.

Dad’s spiel right before Nothing New….bit ironic, talking about how she only writes about bad men….and then bam! This was her fear all along. Losing her novelty. Being shot down! About the 10 minute version: She's not talking about a car accident. She says "you come back swearing it's the same after three months in the grave...", because they broke up and got back together a lot. Throughout the song you can see how they break up and then it goes back to "and there we go again..." because they get back together. "I forgot you long enough to forget why I needed to", because after a certain amount of time passes, you remember the good without the bad and that's dangerous if the person comes back and asks you to get back together because you might do it. That's why she says "you come back swearing it's the same", but they had been broken up for three months. And he NEVER said he loved her. He never said they were IN LOVE. "anytime now, he's gonna say it's love, you never called it what it was". If you listen to the song closely you can see how it's a full on "love story" or the story of a relationship. It's starts out good, but she doesn't really see how he's manipulating her in a way. He was 10+ years older than her and she was 20. And it's really interesting because throughout the song she says "I remember it all too well, I was there, I remember", because he used to gaslight her and make it seem like she was imagining things or making things bigger than they were. Oh, and the old red scarf she left... That's a metaphor for her virginity.

@raellepickton6844 Жыл бұрын
54:00 - I think what Taylor is referring to when she says "you held my lifeless frame" is when you've been in a relationship that has beaten you down and exhausted you emotionally, that you end up just numb. So she's saying when they tried again for a second time, they tried to 'revive' what had 'died' between them, but she just had nothing left of her to feel or give anymore. Then you add in the element of "shame" she mentions. And you realise the complexity of feelings she is talking about when you go back to someone you know you shouldn't go back to. And how consequently it just isn't the same as it was before - although you desperately long for it to be. Anyway, I love your reflections and analyses of the songs. Your perspectives are always respectful and considered. I look forward to the 1989 video !!

I think Nothing New's message continues in the second verse as well, because she's talking about how she has to fake smiles. It also talks about how some younger girl will eventually replace her, and if she's just biding time until that happens. It's notoriously difficult for women to have longevity in the entertainment industry and have the same level of fame as when they were young. I think that song is about how she feels about that eventuality. Which is in and of itself a double standard. We don't look at men in the industry and say they are too old for roles or cast younger men as love interests. But we do that for women. She's commenting about how she feels her career has a shelf life.

Nothing New is about the experience of being a woman in the public eye (and specifically the music industry) and is about how women have to constantly reinvent themselves or be left behind. She's singing from the perspective of being worried that she's not young or shiny enough anymore and that she's going to be forgotten for the next new girl who comes along. This is where Pheobe comes in as that younger girl (who she's singing to and giving advice) who she thinks is going to be replacing her. She's going to be happy for her but is mourning and knows the cycle will inevitably repeat itself again when the next person comes along.** She's expressing the fear of her success having an expiry date the more people become bored of her and how she can feel her time in the prime of her career running out. "Lord, what will become of me Once I've lost my novelty?" "It's like I can feel time moving" "And will you still want me when I'm nothing new?" "People love an ingénue" **"I know someday I'm gonna meet her, it's a fever dream The kind of radiance you only have at 17 She'll know the way, and then she'll say she got the map from me I'll say I'm happy for her, then I'll cry myself to sleep"

When Mike said that Girl at Home sounds less pop-y because of the production, I felt that. Personally, I love forever winter, it's my favorite from the vault. I understand why for some people is very simple but I just love visceral Taylor. The male redemption is in Reputation, Lover, Midnights and obviously the Iconic "Back To december" from Speak Now. I think Red was Taylor's biggest heartbreak and a crucial comming of age moment and that is reflected in the variaty of sound and experimetion in the songs. I'm kind of scared for the 1989 TV reaction (I'ts my favorite album from her) because its pure classic pop perfection, but I will be there to heard your thoughts about the songs.
@micaelabarberen7084 Жыл бұрын
She's not talking about that many men, is just Jake here. In speak now is John. The rest of them didn't hurt her the same way this two did (gaslighting, manipulating, etc). Also, she was 20/21 when she was with Jake and he really fucked her up. The "lifeless frame" line is about them getting back together after he left her, and her realizing that she wasn't there anymore (in the relationship), that's why she's embarrased (all i felt was shame). Is a methaphor that starts with the realationship being dead and him digging it up (check the pulse and come back swearing it's the same after three months in the grave). The song is about the good parts of the realationship, but also the gaslighting that he put her through (i like to be myself again but I just can't find it), she doesn't know if things are real orin her head (I'm in a new hell everytime you DOBLE-CROSS my mind). This is why she keeps reapeting "I was there, I remember it all too well"

Red is a thematic break up album. So each song relates to the idea of “mosaic broken hearts”. It’s looking at the prism of breakup and loss through one primary relationship. It’s fun to think about All to Well, The Moment I Knew, I Bet You Think About Me, 22, We are Never Getting Back Together having lyrical overlaps in storytelling the same relationship and the ever changing feelings she had during its breakdown.

The thing with Nothing New is, it's meant to encompass a blend of different feelings revolving around being a young woman and being treated like no matter what you do you're always going to be criticized for something (too opinionated if you speak your mind in group conversations, too comfortable with your body if you wear revealing clothes, too prudish if you dress and act conservatively in the dating world, just always "too much") and also specifically in the music industry the feeling there's a ticking clock hanging over her head counting down to when she's going to be considered old and irrelevant and no longer worth being backed by radio and music labels. Being raised that the way you live should be determined by what will please others is something a lot of women identify with and she talks about people-pleasing in other songs.

Something I think yall missed is that the song "The Moment I Knew" is about a specific moment that the 10 minute version of All Too Well references. The part about the guy charming her father but then he saw her watch the door all night willing him to come and he said its supposed to be fun turning 21. It was her 21st birthday and he essentially stood her up which to be that young and celebrating such a big milestone, that can be devastating. To be in love and to have the moment of realization that its not reciprocated like you thought during your 21st birthday party...that will forever be her memory of her 21st birthday. You only get one lifetime and you only turn 21 once but instead of it being a joyous memory of fun like it is for most, shes gonna remember it as the moment she got her heart broken for the first real time...thats so powerful when you think about it in that context and thats why All Too Well 10 and The Moment I Knew are two of my absolute favorite songs by her!

Something I think adds a lot to understanding her music is putting each album in context of the others and looking at them all together in the timeline of their release - RED was after Speak Now, and you can hear the difference in how she writes about and understands love and reality vs fairytale. RED is also a breakup album, and I think reading like the album lyric booklet intros or something similar before y'all react is a way you could avoid spoilers but still hear some of her thoughts going into it. RED was also her last country album, and she got a lot of criticism for putting it within the country genre from country fans ("this is pop not country" type of stuff) despite it being something that her label basically made her do because of her "country artist" image, trying to keep her in that same box. I think of 1989 as her phoenix reborn after that experience, because she put her foot down and made purely and entirely pop album that was a massive success, showing that she was able to cross genres and stay relevant and successful (a la Shania Twain). So it's definitely something for you all to think about when reacting to 1989, since it leans SO pop, but the reasoning and context behind it, as well as her depiction in the media during that time! I agree with everyone that I'm PUMPED for y'all to react to Reputation, but it DEFINITELY needs some introduction to understand what happened between 1989 and then, the Kimye and #TaylorSwiftisOverParty, streaming service drama, plus meeting Joe, to then understand why Reputation is the way it is. Honestly I feel the same about Lover, since part of it's beauty is how it is a sister album/follow up to Reputation. Would love to see you both react to the Miss Americana documentary, because I think that also is such a wonderful insight into her as a person and artist, especially in the lead-up to Lover, and is so meaningful to look at with the perspective of her successes in the years since with folklore/evermore/midnights/Eras tour. Looking forward to one day a reaction to midnights especially :) I love watching you guys and love your insights and outsider takes, and the care and consideration you give to these songs despite just now hearing them!

Also appreciate how you guys remembered that this was a rerecord with this react vs the Speak Now, because it does explain some of the more "childish" views on love, because she was a child! Also, for your dad when he was listening to the vault - she recorded the Taylor's Versions recently, so the youthful voice you hear is just a mature taylor showing off her mad skills and being able to replicate her younger tone and sound lol It gets me everytime when I listen to the rerecords and hear that young taylor sound, knowing it's just her replicating what she used to sound like, especially after hearing folklore/evermore and knowing how her mature voice sounds now

love you guys - but i think your videos and reactions would be really elevated by having brief contexts for each song before you listen! it’s really great to formulate your own ideas and opinions of her songs, but there are so many things that you both missed because it is buried in the knowledge of the swiftie fandom. we are the best fans and we would be so happy to help you! for example, i think your reaction to forever winter would of been SO enhanced by reading a few sentences on the song before listening.

I think the lifeless frame part was a metaphor because of their repeated breakups and their dynamic really affecting her, like she said about him coming back to her but ‘all I felt was shame’

i want to preface this by saying i really enjoyed your reaction! you guys have thoughtful commentary on both lyrics and production and i appreciate that. and thank you for showing girl at home some love, i feel like so many people don't like it 😭 but i did want to share my perspective as a swiftie: i think something that the general population forgets is that taylor doesn't write these songs as revenge against these men who have wronged her or whatever, she just writes her feelings like diary entries. and sometimes those feelings are angry or sad. and she doesn't claim "this is objectively how the relationship went down", she's just expressing how SHE felt. and people enjoy her music because she can articulate emotions in a way that make people think "i've felt this exact same way before", whether that's about a relationship, a friendship, a family member, misogyny, etc. and this album just happens to be THE taylor swift heartbreak album, so it's bound to have lots of sad/angry songs about relationships but yes she also has positive love songs (a lot of reputation and lover songs) and songs where she acknowledges that she's in the wrong too (ex. back to december, afterglow, the great war). and when people say stuff like "damn taylor can't keep a relationship, maybe she's the problem" -- she acknowledges that in anti-hero. also that criticism is rarely levied against men like leonardo dicaprio who date a lot. i hope this is not taken as an attack because it's not intended to be one. it's just that there has been this media narrative, particularly in the early-mid 2010s, that taylor is some vengeful man-hater (which she addresses in blank space) and i don't fault people for having absorbed some of that narrative if that's all you've really heard about her, so i hope sharing my perspective can provide some food for thought anyways, i still enjoyed your reaction and appreciate your open-mindedness in trying out new music and sharing your thoughts! and congrats to megan!!!

All Too Well 10 minute version hit on a different level if you had been listening to the original version since it first came out, the way the new parts were unfamiliar yet fit into the flow of the song so well was actually mindblowing on first listen

you guys just listened to "begin again" and "sad beautiful tragic", and on speak now "back to december", and even lines like "maybe we got lost in translation maybe I asked for too much" on all too well exist... it just so happens that the man who inspired most of the songs on red didn't inspire many "both of us were at fault" type songs because... he was a 30 year old dating a 20 year old girl and it doesn't paint a great relationship. she has empathy and nuance and takes accountability when she feels that.

In my opinion from the outside, i think the issue with Taylor’s exs is that they never liked that she was the more famous person, their egos couldn’t handle it and it created different types of issues. Which is the only reason i think Travis and Taylor might have a chance, since he isn’t ashamed instead he’s proud about it.

Always love your reactions and so agree with everything you said at the end. Especially on the first listen it's hard to feel the way we do after sitting with these songs for so many years. I am the biggest Swiftie and love so many songs I didn't die over on the first listen that are now my absolute favourites. Every song has it's place in her discography and the talent is just undeniable, so fun watching others discover her depth

There was no car accident in the 10 min All Too Well. They break up, but after 3 months he tries to reaerect the already dead relationship. So they have sex again, but she feels nothing because her heart had already been broken. "And then you wonder where it went to, when you reached to, and all I felt was shame, as you held my lifeless frame" is a reference to feeling regret about having sex even when you know it was over months ago.

She went through a really bad breakup at the time this was written. Taylor writes phenomenal breakup songs, but I promise you her songs she sings about someone she loves…just as good, if not, better. Imagine being the biggest upcoming star and being at heart a hopeless romantic who is willing to put everything she has into a relationship.Cannot be easy. She wants to love sooo badly and it just hasn’t worked out. I feel like dating in itself is soooo hard, it has to be magnified by like 100 when you’re one of the biggest stars in the world! My advice is to just enjoy the music for what it is. I promise she’s not a man hater, she just feels things very deeply and songs are how she communicates those feelings

Red was specifically about her short relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal and the breakup was very traumatic for her. She does talk positively about men. Or did you miss those discussed in Begin Again, Stay Stay Stay, etc.

omg reading these comments I thought you guys were gonna be DICKS 😂 I should’ve known better 😂😂😂 I do agree that the redemption comes w/ rep & lover! (whether you guys will like those albums…. that’s another story - I personally do 😌 lover did take quite a few listens to warm up to ngl). hearing mike say he’d like to listen to her country stuff made me want a fearless tv reaction SO BAD. I LOVE that album. it is very teenage girl but if you can just sit in that and let it take you over, man you’ll be blown away by what she could do at 18. keep on keepin on you guys! I hope people don’t start making you feel like these reactions aren’t worth it if you don’t always have only praises - that is OKAY!! and the rest/most of us love these ❤

Love your reactions! I very much look at the Vault tracks as ones that were redundant in some way, or not part of the sound/message of the album, or were cut for a reason -- and view them with that lense. It's cool that we get them fully produced, and how it introduces new music from this era of her life (also a neat way to entice fans to play Taylor's Version songs)! And yes, she writes a lot of songs about break ups and boyfriends, but there are a good many that she writes from a romantic angle (so it has wider appeal) but may be about something unrelated to a boyfriend/lover.

Well, everybody has a different life experience and stories and taste. So, no need to come so strong in the comments. Remember, they don't really know or maybe don't even really care for the backstory of the songs, they just wanna consume the art on its own. They don't have to know about every detail of Taylor's life to have a right to enjoy her music. A man in his late 50's might think that the breakup theme in this album written by a 20 something year old woman was not his cup of tea. Especially when you know they REALLY enjoyed folklore and evermore. When that's your introduction to Taylor, some of the songs in this album can indeed feel basic/uninteresting. Anyways, loved the reactions!!!!

Idk why people get mad when someone doesnt get the true story behind a taylor song, like only 1% of casual listeners will have the context and music is also there for people take their own thoughts about the song
