Last year was my second season with my dahlia cut flower garden. I was able to grow, dig, clean, store, divide, and multiply my crop. I dug them again in November, cleaned them and set them on a table in my barn, to prepare for packing. I left them too long and sadly lost most all of them. I kept some saying "there has to be ONE that didn't die." Fingers crossed. I tried to look at the bright side - I got to buy new tubers and plan to label them this time. It was so sad to lose them all - Lesson learned - let them dry for 1 DAY...not one week. Thanks for inspiring me!

I’m making maple syrup today and doing a ton of seed starting as well as presprouting ranunculus. We still have snow and cold weather in upstate New York. Time to check my dahlias. I divide in the fall and store in vermiculite in my finished basement so I have to mist them a couple times during the winter to keep them from drying out.

Didn’t know you could pre sprout them… but luckily, I don’t have to dig them up in DFW… have a hard tie with rununculus and a few other bulbs, but Summer blooming bulbs U can over winter in ground are life changing! So great for beginner gardeners & gardens! I keep telling my fam to grow them bc of how easy they are, esp in Texas… I wouldn’t want to dig them up either! Live the idea of covering with tarp AND mulch… often have an issue with water, bc nothing else explains why they didn’t grow.

I'm so curious to see how your overwintering experiment goes! Two falls ago I missed a few tubers as I was digging them up, and they came back (with no mulch and sub-zero winter temps!) last spring. I was shocked, as I'm also zone 6 and thought they would never survive our winters. My success rate with tuber storage has been terrible, so this past fall I decided to just leave them all in the ground and see what happens this spring. Even if only half survive, that's better than my success rate at storing the tubers. :)

I bought a mixed pack of "Butterfly and Bee" bulbs from Costco that had two pink HS Juliet dahlias in it and they were in great big clumps with like 15 tubers on each. Some of them were dried out and 3 broke off but there were so many I'm hopeful I still get lots of blooms. I've never tried growing dahlias before so I'm watching everything! This was helpful.

Last year I pre-sprouted my dahlias and potted them up with you and had beautiful flowers for so much longer in my zone 3 garden (the year before they didn’t bloom till September). This year, I discovered my pre-sprouting tray with the tubers that didn’t sprout last year (oops). When I went to throw them out, I discovered one was sprouting! I potted it up and it is growing beautifully! Zombie dahlia!

Hello Laura! Nice to see some Dahlia action again. I have been trying to keep my hands off of my tubers for some time now. It is early and I have no space to grow them in pots. That said, I always start them in pots, just to eliminate the possibility of disease. I just have more space once all the vegetables are out in the garden. I also like starting from seed. It is lovely! They tend to give me nice big clumps of tubers even in their first year. Plus, a big supply of beautiful flowers throughout the season! I love Dahlias! I fell in love with them by watching your videos! I have learned so much about them from you! Thank you soooo much!!!!

I had a couple dahlias last year in a pot. When winter came, I took the tubers out of the pot and I put them in layers of sand in another pot that I moved inside and put in my laundry room. The other day. I was planting pansies and decided to check them and they had sprouted! So I planted them and will baby them for while. I am a zone 8 I believe.. NW Arkansas, And we will probably have another freeze but nothing severe and I will cover them or bring them in if that shows up in our forecast! This was the first time I ever grew Dahlias and loved them so I hope they turn out ok!! I love the labelling idea and will do that next year.
