Yeah, the original dweller had its flaws, but it was made with care and effort to make something that took advantage of what little horror Minecraft has. It seems like the emphasis is less on making an actually scary mob and more on making some "COOL EDGY DWELLER GUY WHO YOU CANT KILL AND HE KILLS YOU AND HES SUPER STRONG AND SCARY!!" and every time it just comes off as cheap, anticlimactic and like its trying too hard. The warden accomplished all of these while also simultaneously being fair and balanced. When the warden hunts you, it feels like you're intruding on its territory. When a dweller attacks you, it feels like the mob just arbitrarily decided that you've been alive for a LITTLE too long.

The whole point of early Minecraft's lonely and disturbing feeling was from NOT KNOWING if there is something there with you. The cat repeating the same audio clips over and over reminds me of those old halloween decorations that activate and make a noise every time you walk past them, but since the voice boxes are cheaply made, it has like two different audio clips. Except instead of having to walk past it, it has a broken sensor that just decides to go off randomly cuz you've had it for 20 years and it just sits in your basement until halloween. But it's too silly and nostalgic to get rid of so you just keep putting it up every year anyway, even if it sometimes makes you think there's a ghost or burglar in your house but even that would be scarier to deal with than this mod tbh.

The issue with more subtle mods and the reason why I think most people don't do them is just that you can't really get the "eerie uncertainty" effect when you download and install a mod specifically to add it. It'd be cool if there were some kind of mod that mainly just adds QoL features and also has a hidden subtle horror component, but even then, it's just a ticking time bomb waiting to have its effect ruined by a review or video essay that spoils the bit.
@SlendHQ7 күн бұрын
There was a mod that somebody talked about which does that kind of thing: It had children's stuff BUT also had a hidden soul mechanic that if you apply it to them, then those plushies etc would come to life at night and become violent. Could be interesting to see more mods explore that.

I love how even in 2024, a Herobrine mod, From the Fog, still does horror better than any of this slop. Herobrine is still king even after all these years. He doesn't scream at you, he doesn't even attack you, he watches you from afar, and walks away when you notice him. He can mine blocks when you're underground, place pyramid structures and redstone torches, cut down leaves on trees, and more subtle things that aren't in your face.

I was on a server with From the Fog installed and it’s honestly one of the best spooky mods for Minecraft, entirely because he doesn’t attack you. And because it's called "Vapor", I just assumed it was a kind of area-of-effect that would kill you if you stayed in one place too long, forcing you to RUN LIKE HELL, not from an actual mob, but from this invisible and unknowable force. I'm bored, so here's my pitch for a spooky little fella It's some sort of Reaper. The game keeps a tally as to how many passive and hostile mobs the player has killed. The mob only would spawn once there is a significant disparity between the two categories of mobs. Once there's a disparity, the Mob regularly spawns away from the player, and moves towards them, with a visual tell as to which mob type is lower. Perhaps if their Ai gets stuck, they can phase through blocks as a ghost. The mob is relatively easy to kill. Once it touches the player, it temporarily takes away one of their hearts and decreases the amount of saturation food gives by eating. Once the disparity is closed, the Mob still spawns, but this time, once it touches the player, it returns the heart it stole instead. Not exactly scary, and maybe a little annoying, but ideas are fun to share

Alright, you wanna know how I'd make a horror mod? Subtleness. The whole "you're not alone" feeling, without relying on some spooky ghoul to carry the scare factor. Players might start to hear a pickaxe mining around underground, breaking blocks somewhere... but they don't ever see whatever's breaking and mining. They just hear it. They might see cobblestone bridges in the nether, their chests rummaged through, possibly even a carbon-copy of their base hundreds of blocks out, same loot and same build. Whatever is living in this world never reveals it's face, it simply lurks and does stuff only YOU should be able to do.

@negative128 күн бұрын
Most if not all of these Minecraft "horror" mods suffer greatly from a complete lack of two of the most important aspects of horror; immersion and tension. What many of these mods miss is that modern Minecraft is far from the vaguely unsettling, liminal beta era that most people are referring to when they talk about the game being creepy. Even if you take your brightness all the down, jack down the render distance, and add fog the game is so easy to see things clearly both from a distance and at night there is little to no threat of something sneaking up unless it literally teleports. It's hard to feel threatened when you can see the scary pop into existence 20 chunks out. A point you touched on was the awful usage of sound by these mods. Good scares are built on a foundation of strong atmosphere and shockingly Minecraft doesn't have that. Spooky sounds and freaky creatures just plopped into any regular Minecraft world is never to work. You need to be immersed to feel threatened by a creature that should first blend in and then subvert the ambiance of an atmospheric world. In my opinion you would have to entirely rebuild the vibe of Minecraft from the ground up, but that wouldn't be quick enough to feed the content farm slop machine so I don't anticipate that happening. Secondly, and somewhat amusingly, the complete absence of tension is a problem these mods share with recent Five Nights at Freddy's of all things. It is somewhat of an negative reciprocal relationship where modern Fnaf, mostly Security Breach, has absolutely no tension because there is no threat or any kind of danger and the dweller and some such related mods ruin any tension that could be built by immediately killing you. To stick with the comparison, the original Five Nights at Freddy's worked so well not just because of the animatronic designs which weren't trying too hard to be scary, not just because ambiance and atmosphere I talked about, but because it started and by in large remained a pretty easy game. Not to say it was place down a boat and completely counter the monster easy, but you weren't dying and getting screamed at a minute into the game. Fnaf was shockingly good at building that tension and maintaining it unless you the player made a mistake and got punished for it. I don't think I need to elaborate any further on how badly a lot of these mods to follow the original dweller example and just relax for a bit, but suffice to say that is far from the only comparison that could be drawn between Minecraft "horror" mods and Fnaf.

I really feel the first point, minecraft and cave exploration especially scared the HELL out of me as a kid. And while most of it is probably just me getting older, some of it was the game, the darkness, and the mystery and not quite knowing how it worked (which is kinda impossible in vanilla after playing it for years). I think the Warden managed to replicate some of those feelings but these Mascot Horror-type mods definitely do not.

I don't know if it's at all possible but if the tale got injured by the player and thus would run away, tail between legs to heal and come back. Might give player a bit of a respite for a few nights before he rocks up again. The threat needs to exist but needs to be manageable. A little edit to the above but perhaps when the player is outside in the open, the rake could spawn in but after a thick fog rolls in to disorient the player. Naturally then, trying to find your way theough the fog back to your base and seeing something out of the corner of your eye as he stalks you would add the spooks needed. The non scary factor of most of the mods including rakey is you can see him from a good distance away, he blares his big tune and comes and smacks you till one of you dies. Rakey needs to be modelled like the animal he is.

One the first day, one could follow the player, putting down a trail of ink every so often (like a snow golem but less often) and they can hide in the ink (like Splatoon, but without the waves when they are moving). the following days, more of the ink-bois could form, and the ink trail would become more clustered, leading to 2 paths: One path is the player either doesn't notice the ink / ignores it. This would lead to the inky bois making a "settlement" near where the player likes to visit, and then attacking at some point during the night (this would be on day 10-15) and there would be a lot of them, so it would be hard to defend against, not impossible, but hard. Perhaps there can be a bigger inky boi? If you win, you get some pretty good loot to boot, and can be a reason to let the settlement grow to get better loot. risk vs reward situation. good for new players that dont know how the mod works, and good for veterans that know how to benefit from the mod. the other path is if the player notices the ink path, and follows it. Once the player gets close, if they start to destory the ink on the ground, they would pop up out of the ink (how many depends on the day) and attack the player, making a "scary" sound, as if trying to scare the player away from attacking again. If the player wins the encounter, the inky bois drop an item that can help deal with them easier, like removes ink within a set radius so you dont need to break each and every block. the inky bois would reset after 10-20 days, and make a settlement much faster (3-5 days). each time they louse they get stronger, but the player has more means to deal with them. If the player louses the encounter, all the items on the player get "inked" in where they cant be crafted or used with until they submerge them in a cauldrons water. The inky bois would go back to building a settlement, but will attack the player on sight now, and when finished with a settlement, they will attack the player. what do yall think? Good, Bad? things you would change? lmk!

To me one of the biggest things with all these dweller-types is that they just don't look like they belong in minecraft, model-wise. That's also one of the things a lot of people miss when they say things like "a modder could make this update in a week!" A lot of mods don't take the effort to make it feel like a part of the same game. You mentioned that these mods tend to have too many polygons and that's def one of the reasons why- Like the warden again, its model is perfectly minecrafty, there are no curves, it's perfectly blocky. Modders give their super scary mobs curves and that is simply not minecrafty! Same reason I can't get used to pixelmon models lmao

Idea for a new kind of horror mod: - When you enter the world it's normal, until you "activate" it by crafting something - The goal is to "deactivate" it, by transfering what you crafted to a few structures, "targets" so to speak - The monster added by the mod attacks you very rarely, but attacks increase in frequency and ferocity (hunting longer before running away) as you approach target while holding the item - If you're killed, the monster steals the key item, and you need to hunt it down to get it back - Monster gives you a break from appearing whenever you manage to kill him, but with every death becomes stronger (Preferably with some upper limit) - In addition to hunting or running away, the monster has two other modes: > Playing: while you don't have armor equipped, there is a chance the monster will stop JUST short of hitting you, and instead follow just behind you attacking only if you attack first, turn away for too long, or move more than 50 tiles towards a "target". > Mocking: activated instead of hunting while it holds the item, and randomly some other times. It remains at some distance from you, running away if you approach, but silently coming closer to either attack or scream loudly right behind you while you don't see it. The goal is to make it seem like that monster is constantly toying with you, while getting serious about killing you if you attempt to complete your goal. So you always have an option of just doing your best to ignore it by leaving that item in a chest or monster's hands- always have an option of giving up. Also, since your goal is to travel somewhere, there is no need to give that monster annoying cheats like breaking or climbing blocks- you can just choose to stay holed up in your base if you want to, will have to leave it sooner or later if you want to win the challenge.

man, that advancement from the cartoon dweller mod feels like it could actually work really well as part of a more subtle mod, imagine just merrily walking through a forest and getting that notification, with no context whatsoever. Then when it scrolls out of the visible chat log the line is purged along with the advancement it links to, only for the advancement to randomly reappear (without a message). You could even make it more complex, have the advancement be visible in specific reproducible contexts, so it feels like your world is haunted. Not only would it be creepy to realize that the advancement is only there when you're in a specific part of your base, but it would also be a cool moment of making that connection and going "oh shit! this isn't a fluke!"

i genuinely agree with every point you've made. as a person who used to (and still kinda does) horror i can fully say the mods have devolved into being designed specifically for youtubers, who pile on tons of fake sound effects and overly exaggerate their reactions. it's been apparent and STILL IS, that most use a stolen code with just a different texture/sound design, then go on and gaslight the viewers into thinking it's a brand new creature LOL, i remember having to expose the niche's biggest creator TWICE for doing that exact thing, but EVERY KZbinR literally decided to bring the trend back and i just cba anymore. another thing is how these mods often sacrifice actual creativity or effort (siren head) for quick virality. instead of pushing boundaries or creating something genuinely unique, they rely on cheap tactics to grab attention. it feels like the focus has shifted from making immersive mods to just feeding the algorithm and farming clicks. tho im not surprised, they target a kid's audience who just solely rely on videos being made, and if they stop they fall off. not only does this dilute the quality of minecraft horror, as a whole, but also sets a bad precedent for future creators who might think this is a standard what's more disappointing is how this approach undermines the true potential. it's supposed to evoke genuine fear, not only rely on jumpscares and loud sounds with recycled mechanics. when creators take shortcuts like this, it kinda cheapens the experience for both the players and the audience, makes me wonder how much further the genre could have evolved if more effort went into creating something original rather than chasing clout.

Me and some friends played with 2 seperate horror mods and it was really fun (and scary) for the few hours it lasted before the novelty ran out and we started doing other stuff (though I do have to note is that one of the horror creatures had a lot of weird behavior and didn't do many annoying sounds which probably extended the time before the novelty ran out).

You know what, that “feeling watched” achievement could’ve worked REALLY well if nothing actually happened afterwards and if it was a bit further along in the game. Just minding your own business when the game alerts you that you’re being watched, but you can’t see anything and nothing comes out of the fog. You’re just supposed to accept that knowledge and try to go back to what you were doing. It’s like when your back tenses up or the hairs on your neck get prickly, you feel like something’s there but don’t know what or where. Missed opportunity fr

I feel like a good horror mod would be something I like to call the “IRS” idk why just has a nice ring to it (Nah but on a serious note kinda of like the concept of dweller mods but they get over used I agree with the fact they should have a counter play like add a new item if you can’t use one in the base game you making a mod after all I feel like some of these horror mod creators forget that fact their making A MOD something that should somewhat change the game Like for the man in the fog. Since he is supposedly from the fog as his name suggests maybe when instead of when he spawns in he could possibly stalk you when stalking you a thick fog begins to forms the he hates light and heat which is why he uses the fog as his place of residence When stalking you he will slowly get closer every time he reaches X. Amount of blocks closer he will play a sound which will progressively get louder (which indicates how close he is) a few things that should be said (he will not spawn in until the tenth in game day and the first three times he stalks you he simply observes you he will get close but he won’t directly attack you since he is a ambush predator that means he is somewhat smart he gauges how much of a threat you are) (He will have a high amount of health and attack damage but that’s just to play into what he is in this concept of him He is a Hyper carnivore and a Apex predator meaning he ONLY eats meat and is near the top of the food chain.) (Due to how smart it is it will understand the concept of tactical retreat when under 25% hp it will run away but every time you chase it of it will become more enraged making it stronger the next time you encounter it and slightly more aggressive once you’ve chased off 25 times it will go into hunter mode making it so it will aggressively hunt you down it’s behavior will be alot more intense running at you unless you use one of the diamond level items which will be discussed later on and the netherite level items will be the most effective into scaring it off) Now to get into the items you can use to counter him as I stated he detests bright light and heat So their are 5 items that can be used depending on your progression 1) a throwable torch (this items gives you a torch which you can throw at the monster if you hit it it will deal massive damage to its heat sensitive skin once the dweller reaches 25% of its hp it it will go into retreat mode as stated before) [to make this item you simply need 1 wool which you turn into 9 fabric wrappings by placing it in a crafting table then surround the stick in said fabric wrappings to make throwing handle which you use to make the torch. 2)Flashlight (this is for when you reach iron level it’s as it’s name suggests a simple flash light if you shine it at the man in the fog it will harm the man in the fogs eyes making it screech in pain it will attack you once before running away to regain its sight) [made with red stone iron and glass I’m not writing a whole other paragraph just for the crafting grid -_-] 3) heat flash: (it’s a combination between a flashlight and fire aspect…. OK IM RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS lol alright this is gold level of the progression it uses magma blocks to generate both heat and light which will irritate the dweller making it less inclined to want to chase you as to prevent said item from being used on it but it will cause the dweller to stack up my rage more quickly) [just surround the flashlight in gold to make Golden casing and then surround the golden casing in magma blocks] 4: Hell just burn him (it’s a mini flamethrower what do you want from me? Functions as a small low power flamethrower which uses coal to be able to fire it) [you need copper red stone and a diamonds the to make it for three separate items. The coal container, the red stone components and the flamethrower body itself.] 4) Fog breaker. (Now we get to the item used to Permanently get rid of the CURRENT man in the fog…. *yeah theirs more then one* it’s created by surrounding putting a netherite sword in a crafting table with the other items it’s the only item that can I’ll make sure the monster doesn’t run away and if you kill the monster you can get a Dweller plushy aswell as dweller skin which can be used to make a taxidermy statue of the dweller as a trophy. This is probably really bad since I’m really sleep deprived rn but I cooked what I coudl

This, on the other hand, is a very good video. I really like how you also added resolves for all the creatures since a LOT of them have the SCP problem, where it's a battle of "I have a flaming sword", "Oh yeah? It's kind of sad that all these modern, "horror" mods still can't be as terrifying as Dimensional Doors or Thaumcraft's Eldritch dimension... Personally, I think mobs like the drowned, the Warden, and the upcoming Creaking captures the dread and fear of being stalked much better. Also shoutout to the parasite mod, not only are they freaky, because they hijack passive and hostile mobs they feed into a constant paranoia that this cow you're killing might sprout spider legs and start chasing you.

The only legitimately scary Minecraft mod that I think exists is not even explicitly a horror mod; Scape and Run: Parasites doesn't try to outright scare the player, but it accomplishes a kind of horror all the same. If you're using it for the first time, you're essentially thrust into an extremely hostile, alien situation - and even after using it for a long time, it still possesses a kind of lost-cause ennui regarding the state of your world, since you can only realistically struggle against them and their evolution for so long before inevitably falling behind.

The most scary experience I had with that mod is heading to a village I frequented (I like to have my worlds spread out connected by roads usually) only to be greeted with it empty. The villagers were gone, most of the animals were too - then a infected villager came up from behind. Just suddenly getting jumped was horrific, especially with the designs... It isn't a surprise I made a wall around the other village with a redstone gate to get in, is it?

I feel like these mods fundamentally don't understand horror and how to properly execute it in Minecraft. The tall, pale and detailed design doesn't at all fit in Minecraft's aesthetic. Also the way they work is they will basically just chase you and jumpscare you. That might startle you but it won't scare you. I feel like Minecraft horror should above all else be psychological and subtle, which are both the things that made Herobrine not only so popular but also scary
