When Cruijff joined Barcelona as a player and later as manager, they never won the Ec1/CL. There were a club like Espanyol. He as a player started the change with Michels, the famous Dutch coach. Then he won as a trainer the EC1 in 1992 with the dreamteam he build. Without Cruijff, Barca would have been just an ordinary club.

There might be players that outperformed Cruijff on the pitch, especially internationally, like Pele, Maradona, or Messi. But no one, absolutely no one, had so much influence on the game of football as Johan Cruijff. He revolutionized playmaking, he revolutionized positioning, he revolutionized off-the-ball movement. Then as a coach he kept revolutionizing the approach to football, to tactics, technical training, the triangles approach (what we call tiki-taka now). The video illustrates most of this, but people always forget that Cruijff also revolutionized the professionalism of football and financial aspects of the sport. He refused to wear club sponsor clothes because he had a personal sponsor, one of the first. He argued with the KNVB that internationals should be compensated. He argued for more bonus incentives for players. We can argue all day who was the absolute best player and never agree...but no single player has meant more for football as Johan Cruijff. That is a hill I will die on.

these players were different perhaps buit did not outperform cruyff. they were perhaps even better dribblers but cruyff was incomparable also as a player. he was three players in one. striker, playmaker and as a wandering destroyer. all of excellent historic quality. He had the charisma that was unmatched. And he had something no other player had...a meta perspective on play and coaching...on football in short....no other player showed that individual class on the positions mentioned while also being architect on the field and making others play so much better (proved it at every team he played for). He is not to be known just by clips and skill shows. he was 90 minutes the ball magnet and did things never seen before.

The Gospel of Johan "If you play for ball possession you don't have to defend. Cause there is only one ball." "Experience. You’ve either got it or you don't." "The average of a team is determined by its weakest player." "If you give Italians one opportunity, they score two goals" "I am seldom in error, because I find it difficult to make mistakes." "The difference between right and wrong is often no more than five meters." "The simpler the better, because the fewer options you give to a player, the higher the chance that he will be doing the right thing." "I absolutely hate a player that moves, but doesn't know where to." "People say life is a flow. That's correct. When I tried to spit against the wind recently, it landed in my own face." "We did fantastic, simply because we couldn't do any better!" "Well, the ball has to go between those two posts. As a minimum." "Play the game as it should be played. Football is made for the spectators. They most enjoy seeing an attack, so you have to attack." "Am I dictatorial? No, I'm not, but the players have to do what I say." "I don't believe, because I'm not a believer, but I do think that there is something else and therefore I believe in the thing that I think is there" "Well, if you understood football, YOU would be sitting here" "I have got to be able to trust the people in my team, and they have to challenge me. I have no use for brownnosers" “I'm still convinced that the way that I do it is how it has to be done, otherwise I wouldn't be doing it.” "If you see a player sprint, then he has started too late" (at Barcelona) “Before the match 22 players are praying, I never understood that. If there was a God and he would treat everyone equal, every match would end up a draw" "We started searching for the victory and then you always automatically find it.” "I wasn't there just like that when I was 17, falling out of the sky! I was there already when I was 14, stealing the bikes of Ajax' first team. I didn't look up to them, I knew I was going to be one of them, sooner or later." "Ajax is a fantastic club! If you make sure that you're in charge, otherwise it is impossible to work there" "I always take decisions myself. If at Ajax they tell me "You're too old" then I say "You don't decide that, that's my decision" "I've got an office in Barcelona. But you'll never find me there, cause I don't like paper." "Italians? They can not win from you. But you CAN loose from them." "Often something has to happen, before something happens" “Playing football is very simple. But playing simple football is the hardest thing there is.” "I love working! As long as it is work that I love ..." (on TV football analysis) "When I come home from a TV talk show, Danny (wife) always asks "what did you say?". Then I reply "For the life of me, I can't remember" "I'm always against everything. Until I take a decision, then I'm in favor of it. Seems logical to me ..." "A rich club? I've never seen a bag of money score a goal" "It's better to go down with your own vision, then with the vision of somebody else" "First point, there is only one ball so you've got to have that one, but the essence is: what are you then going to do with that ball?" (at Barcelona) "Now there is unity, everybody does what I'm asking for. That's because they're not Dutchmen, that always say as soon as I take a breath 'Yes, but ...' ” "The time that I carried money is long behind me. I always bring my name and my face." "Misfortune is what you get with a negative attitude and luck is what you get with a positive attitude” "What do you prefer? One good elevensome or eleven good onesomes?" "You're not getting it? Well, if I'd wanted you to understand it, I would have explained it better" "The dot has to be put there on the i where it belongs!" "If you're not there somewhere, then you are either too early or you are too late." "People have to drive faster. Then they are quicker off the roads and there are fewer traffic jams.” "If I ask you to show what you can do, you will show me. But then I also know what you can not do, because you're not showing me that." "Money that you earn after your 30th birthday is what you save. What you earn before is what you spend." "Coincidence is logical" - Johan Cruijff - 1947 - 2016

Football has not evolved. It has merely changed. To say he would be a sub for West Ham is plain stupid. Football has 'evolved 'into a non contact sport. Most of today's players would have the legs brutally kicked from beneath them if they tried their showboating skills before the premier league era. Football only evolves (ie changes) through rule changes, whether changes to offside rules or changes to fouling like slide tackling, tackling from behind, etc. This started in the 19th century and is continuing today. Do your research.

This isn't about statistics. If you look at Cruyff as a player he was different. He did a lot more than he needed to do. The role he had as a coach is far different. His coaching ideas far exceeds his playing abilities. I don't care how he played. Cruyff is the model of a coach and of a style of play. The only thing that matters to this is that you see how he can prove what he says is right. He says I can shoot with my right left pretty much... not 100 right but he does say how he can shoot with the inside of each foot and the outside of each foot and that makes him better than anyone. HIs coaching ideas and his philosophy and how he sees the game is the path to fun. Have fun. I pass to you I move you pass to me.. if I think I cant score I pass to you and you can score.

I was going to make the same point. It was 1-0 to East Germany, as I recall, and both German teams qualified for the next phase, which aroused suspicions that the result may have been agreed upon in advance. In my mind the Netherlands definitely had the best team in the world in 1974 (and in 1978) but unfortunately they didn't make it official by winning a final. Johan Cruyff is the best player I've ever watched in the flesh and I've seen a few top candidates - Eusebio, Pelé, Bobby Charlton, George Best, Franz Beckenbauer, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and others. Messi is a great player, but the best ever?! You would expect the best ever player to win at least one world cup, after playing in 4 of them! Maradona carried two average Argentine teams on his shoulders to reach the final; the 2-nd one while he was past his peak, due to injury and age factor. Maradona made Napoli Champion twice in an Italian league that Milan, Juve, and Inter were the heavy weights; could Messi make Napoli Champion? I seriously doubt. Messi is amongst the greatest of all time like Pele, Cruyff, Maradona, and some others, but not the best ever in my humble opinion. Others can certainly disagree.

@@13muller9 how do you measure art? What do you even consider to be art? Numbers mean nothing: is the best painting the most expensive one? The biggest one? Winning or not winning a worldcup means nothing. Without the “hand of god” and his willingness to cheat Maradonna and his Argentina would have likely lost to England. I was a Maradonna fan back then, watched the game live on tv and was disgusted by that goal and him not once admitting he cheated. The way he spoke of Messi to Pelé saying he lacked personality.. The guy was a total narcissist. For that reason alone he’s not even in my top 5 anymore.
@13muller9
@13muller9 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielkane5316 I certainly agree with you with your comment about the England game. Should Bobby Robson had brought in John Barnes sooner or from the beginning, England had a decent chance to win the game. But my evaluation of Maradona was only based on his talent, not his character's shortcomings. Yes he was a cheat and used drugs and paid for it by being thrown out of the World Cup in 1994. But being objective, I can't deny the fact that he was the driving force to get Argentina to 2 World Cup finals, and made Napoli twice champion in a league, where it could have never happened without him. Most people forget about the 1-st hand of God by Daniel Betony in 1978, before he scored the 3-rd goal against Holland, and in 1990 Maradona used his hand in front of the referee to stop the ball hitting the net against the Soviet Union. Argentina didn't even deserve to advance from the group stage and they were lucky against Brazil and Yugoslavia. I am a Holland fan and my most favorite players are Cruyff and Rudy Krol, but I will never dare to call Cruyff the best, as it is a matter of opinion, and more based on one's bias, than his objectivity. As Maradona being a narcissist (which he certainly is), so is Pele ,and worse is Ronaldo (not trying to justify it). When his teammates score a goal, Ronaldo gets upset; so much for sportsmanship and team solidarity!! And he has asked to name the CL after him!! If anybody deserves that, it is Cruyff or Di Stefano, as they became champions when only the champions could play. If Cruyff had not left Ajax, he could have been the 1-st player to win both the CL and Ballon d'Or 5 or 6 times. I don't consider winning the World Cup as a factor in judging the best players, as long as they didn't have the chance to play. George Best never did , but he certainly is amongst the best 10 to 20 players of all time, and De Stefano, I think only played for Spain in 1962 when he was past his peak. But if a player like Messi or Ronaldo play in 4 World Cups and win none, then I can question their fans claim to name them the Best. Portugal's glory in Euro 2016, was achieved when Ronaldo was not playing due to injury, and a great # of his goals are tap in and penalty kicks. Ronaldo is amongst the best, but he should be humble, and stop rising on his feet on team photos, so he can look taller than everybody else!!, even though he is tall already. As for Maradona telling they lack personality, I don't know the context of what he said about Pele, but as for Messi, I think he was pointing to Messi's shortcomings as a captain, and a true leader, which I think as for playing for Argentina, Maradona is right about Messi: Messi can't lift up his teammates and make them mentally a winner. Cruyff was directing the traffic for Holland in 1974. I don't like Roy Keane's thuggery at all, but most Man U players speak highly of him as a captain.

@@13muller9 any team, with any player can loose a WC final. Messi played a final against a German team that had just beaten Brazil 7-1 on their home soil. Not being able to single handily defeat a team that beat Brazil 7-1 says absolutely nothing about Messi. The Dutch lost the WC final 3 times and all 3 times they could have won it: if they had not underestimated the Germans, if Rensenbrink had aimed between the poles instead of against one and if Robben had cleared Casillas’s toe... In the end it’s just one game during which anything can happen. Maybe Messi could have used his hand to score against Germany in ‘14, or Cruijff in ‘74 and they would’ve been up there with Maradona!(?) What if Holland was given the corner kick (to which they had a right to) seconds before Iniesta scored the winning goal? How can you say that Cruijff may have won 2 more CL’s with Ajax had he stayed? So now a legend does need a great team? Was it Ajax who won ‘71 - ‘73 or Cruijff? Why didn’t he win it with Barca? Cruijff is the messia in Barcelona, Maradonna isn’t, why is that? Maradonna got lucky in ‘86, that’s all. Overall the rule in football probably is that the best team wins the tournament, not the best player: France ‘18, Germany ‘14, Spain ‘10, Brazil ‘02, France ‘98, Brazil ‘94, Germany ‘90... Italy ‘06 is debatable and so is Argentina ‘86. Germany didn’t have a top team and Maradonna’s team mates were playing in his shadow, but maybe they were better than we might think. The Dutch had the best players in the world in ‘90, but played terrible as a team. Really, you need more than one great player. Maradonna in his prime would not win the WC with the current Argentina team. And about Ronaldo: I really don’t like him (not a fan), but...In the past 50 years or so, Portugal was never any good on any tournament they played, except during the Ronaldo period. He really does make a difference. Did you see him coaching during the ‘16 EC final? But since Greece can also win a big tournament you have to come to the conclusion that luck is also a factor.
@13muller9
@13muller9 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielkane5316 1-you are right: Any team with any player can lose a WC final, but (If you look at my previous comment),I based my argument not just on 2014 W. Cup final, but the whole 4 W.Cup finals that Messi participated. 2_ How can I say Cruyff could have won 2 more CL with Ajax, had he stayed? You just have answered your own question where you point: "The best team wins the tournament". Ajax of 1971-73 had some outstanding players: Krol and Neeskens were world class, and the rest with the exception of the keeper (no disrespect to Stovy) were top talented players. Ajax simply didn't win those finals; they dominated their opponents, and in 1973, except Pete Keiser who was 30 at the time, the rest of their players were still in their mid 20s (mind you on average); so of course Cruyff could have won 2/3 more CL finals with those outstanding players surrounding him. In Barca he failed because he was not surrounded with players (except Neeskens) at the level of his teammates in Ajax. 3- There is a reason, the Dutch with best players in the world, could not produce the best team in 90 W. Cup. Van Basten in an interview which is available on You Tube says: "He along with Gullit and Reikard arrived late to the training camp (probably because of playing in 90 CL final and needing more days to rest), and there was a disharmony between those 3 players and the rest of the Dutch squad who were mainly playing in the Dutch League, and he also mentions the extreme heat in Austria which was their training camp". In addition, the Dutch players were asked who they want to be their manager, the players asked for Cruyff and they got Leo Ben Hocker instead! I read in the papers that Cruyff didn't reach an agreement with KNVB because of the disagreement over his salary. Lately I heard that Rinus Michele who was in charge of appointing a new manager, didn't want Cruyff get the job out of concern that if Holland wins the W. Cup with Cruyff in charge, that might tarnish his legacy! The Dutch are famous for self destructing themselves before or during a major tournament. 4- "You need more than one great player", you are right (Ajax 71-73), but on the other hand, do you really believe that Burruchaga, Oscar Rogery, and Valdano (among class of 1986) were far superior to Heguin, Mascherano and Teves (Teves played in 2010 and maybe 2006 as well)? On average both Maradona and Messi were surrounded by the same above average players; the difference was between Maradona and Messi: Maradona could lift the quality and spirit of players surrounding him, whereas Messi couldn't. But I give you the point that Germany 2014 team was far superior to 1986 team. 5-Actually, Portugal has never been superior during Ronaldo's time. He has played in 4 Euros, and 4 W. Cups, and the only time Portugal won, was when he was out due to injury. Even in 2004, playing at home and with the likes of Figo and Rui Costa at the team, Ronaldo couldn't overcome a team that lacked superstars but played great as a team; and he was beaten not once but twice! If a player participates in 8 tournaments (Euro + W. Cup) and barely wins one when he was not playing, then he can't claim that he didn't have luck on his side. As for him coaching: neither me or you can say what he was saying, and whether his words made any difference, but I think there is a good reason that Fernando Torres is still the manager, and not Ronaldo as player/manager. I think all he was doing was cheering up his teammates; nothing special. You can see Terry Butcher doing the same thing from the bench in 1990 W. Cup, when England was playing Cameron. The only time that Portugal had a really superior team was in 1966 when they beat Brazil, and USSR/CCCP, came back from 0-3 down to win 5-3 against N. Korea, and barely lost to England (being a host is a big plus) due to change in venue, and the rest factor. The credit that I will give to Ronaldo that can make him the GOAT, is only in terms of "Hunger and obsession with eating, resting and exercising like an ultimate professional" In that regard, he tops everybody. 6-Mind you Greece beat Portugal twice at their home soil and defeated France with Zidane and Hanry still at the top; so forgive me for saying: luck had nothing to do with it. Greece had a world class manager in Otto Rehagell who was able to make a superior team out of the above the average players at his disposal.
