Please help! I'm new. 185 lbs. I bought a 99L board and I am struggling! I'm primarily in lighter wind. I like the Cabrinha X-fly, should I get the 6'10" or the 7'6"? Will the bigger board lift off as easily? Thank you! Really appreciate you!

Thanks for all your videos. 12 year kiter here looking into wing foiling. Getting popular here on the Jersey Shore and a friend is now wing foiling. I’m 175 lbs and a 145L board, 5 m wing, and a 1480 foil was suggested. I also kite ski and have been using a Kitewing on ice and snow since the early 2000’s. Plan on taking a new inflatable wing out when there is snow and wind. The inflatable wings are very similar in handling to the Kitewing so hopefully that experience helps with wing handling on the water.

Hey guys, nice video. I saw somewhere that a beginner should have a board volume that is your weight in kilograms plus 40-50 and once you get good it should be plus 10. I found this worked great for me. Also, I sold my first board for more that I bought it for. As you said, the sport is hot and supply is tight.

According to your numbers I should get a 100L board. As a beginner, that seems small. I was thinking 120ish minimum. However, those numbers work perfect for my husband who is 95kg. Is it diff for men vs women?
@tomwolf2173
@tomwolf2173 3 жыл бұрын
@@lindaknight6047 I would use this to just get you in the ballpark and then adjust for preference. The plus 40-50 is what is going to float you comfortably. I’m about 65 kgs and got a 120 for my first board. I was happy for 2 months and then downsized. Some people will want more flotation and some less. If you are new to wind water sports, you probably want more.
@lindaknight6047
@lindaknight6047 3 жыл бұрын
@@tomwolf2173 Interesting that you downsized after only 2 months. I'm a long time windsurfer and SUP surfer so very comfortable in the wind/water. However my SUP is probably 120L, so there you go. Maybe I'll learn on my husband's 140L and downsize to closer to 100L from there. I'd hate to have to buy a new board after a super short time.
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
@@lindaknight6047 Linda... On average I would say if you weigh 95kg he should look at 120 plus liters for sure. It will help a ton to have stability... You can use his board as well but in time you will want the right volume for your size.

All three can be summed up by getting the right gear. Absolutely essential. Second tip: have a way to get back upwind (buddy on a wave runner or small dinghy) so you don’t obsess about getting blown downwind or wear yourself out. This sport is supremely frustrating at first. This tip will greatly decrease that frustration. I promise. Last tip, have an understanding of the wind/wing before you start. An offshore wind is dangerous for a beginner.

Greatnesses idea friend! Honestly aluminum is cheaper and heavier and has more issues corrosion issues with screws, my honest opinion. Carbon is lighter and so nice worth the extra money. After trying efoil in Bali the other day and being on a smaller board and foil than I started with because it got a stick through the propeller leading to no more propeller... I seemed to just be getting the hang of it when the battery ran out... I needed to be planing on that board pretty fast before the board would lift with my weight right forward... As I started to let it lift it seemed like I was more stable with the extra speed than if I backed it off too much... I've only tried with my wing foil once... I probably should have gone today but didn't realise the wind was up better than the forecast said... I think I was trying to get up on the foil without enough speed so it wasn't as stable and wanted to take off downwind... I've got an 8m wing, big board and big foil so hopefully I can get planing with speed so it can be a natural progression to getting up on the foil... Hopefully in the next few days... I'll try to watch the live reports more closely 😊

On efoil, everyone says it’s best to learn with big wing so you can go slow but then you’re unable to get board to plane before standing - which was easier for me. What’s best tactic in wing foiling to get board to plane before standing so you can be standing before going up on foil?
@DamienLeroyYouTube

Yes best practice get the board moving, you standing and your self balanced then come up on foil...... Have a great one...
@Rocco_Kurokawa
@Rocco_Kurokawa 3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like the efoil board you are using has less volume than your bodyweight so you need the dynamic lift of the planing board. In Wingfoiling, as a beginner you want to have a board with at least bodyweight+10, better bodyweight +30 liters. With that you can go pretty slow / you don't need dynamic lift to get up. Of course the board gets more stable with some speed so it is common to start on your knees till you get some speed and then stand up, but on a nice and stable beginner board one should be able to stand up without any speed.

Aircraft Carrier.....My first attempt at wing-foiling was on a 100L board...it was too unstable/tippy and i was extremely frustrated. Fortunately, the second day, I was able to borrow a 130L board and went several hundred yards on foil, my first attempt. Full disclosure: I have a few years of foiling experience with kites, but the stable platform eliminated other variables, allowing me to focus on how the sail works while standing on a board in the water.

Thanks Damien for the great videos. I'm a wing foil beginner with experience as intermediate SUP surfer and racer. I just purchased a Takuma WR3 6M wing as the winds in Guam are typically light. I have an opportunity to get a 2018 Naish Hover Crossover 120L with the 2018 Naish Thrust Large foil for $1500 total brand new. I'm about 94kg and usually SUP surf a 121L board. Should I pull the trigger on the board or look to getting a newer board and foil combo for double the price? Thank you! 🤙

Friend, I believe your board is around 7'6 and that is a lot of water area that you have to unstick. Would be nice if you could find a 5-0 or 6'0 with 120L. Will help release the water tension when learning to get up on foil. As for your

Interesting, Robby said the whole family can start winging on a 95 liter, 1600 front wing of a Jet foil with alloy mast, and a 4 and 5 sqm wing. This is excluding particular heavy folk. This video suggest 140 liter, 2000 (only latest carbon $$$ foil) and 6 sqm wing.

Things are changing quick and this video was two years ago! My guess Robby is saying that, as Hawaii with tons of wind, most places are not Hawaii and most people are larger or weigh a little more :).

@@DamienLeroyKZbin thanks for your reply! Probably true, Hawaii has just better conditions than other spots. I’m still wondering (surfing at a spot with 10-15 knots usually) if I need a 1600 or 2000 wing given that I already have Windfoil experience using only a 900 - 1300 wings? 🤔

My suggestion: easy learning, multiply weight in kg by 25 to get sq cm of wing. i.e. 100 kg x 25 = 2500 sq cm foil. 75kg x 25 = 1875. If you have a learning spot with small waves even during high winds you can bring this multiplier down to 18
