You can tell that in the year that Dan apparently knew his brother was going to die, and the many conversations he says they had, that David told him that he didn't want this to ruin him. To not feel guilty for laughing, and to continue to live his life. I obviously don't know exactly what they spoke about, but I imagine that came up, and that Dan is trying to keep his promise to his brother. But when he's alone, the sadness and pain must be unbearable for him. This is just awful.

Dan, I have 5 siblings who I have enjoyed for almost 60 years and I still can't imagine the hurt I would feel for losing any one of them, much more a single sibling. My heart goes out to you and your family at this trying time.
