This author's own words undermine her credibility. One minute she is talking about SSBNs then 5 minutes later she has forgotten them completely and claims the US doesn't have ICBMs that could hit NK without them overflying Russia. The land based stuff is irrelevant. The USN could park a SSBN 50 miles from Pyongyang and the Dear Leader would never know. Later she doubled down, stating that this was a "huge hole in our national security". My Spidey Sense says someone pushing for longer range land based missiles that nobody needs spun her this silly scenario that anyone with access to a map could see through by observing the proximity of NK to both the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea.

An additional problem with her logic is her statement that an ssbn is undetectable until it “returns to port.” We have known for at least 30 years that a sub-launched missle immediately gives away the submarine’s position and since they can only fire one at a time a sub can only get of maybe as many as a half dozen before an incoming nuc takes out the sub. (It can’t move fast enough to get away) Why have a boat with 90 ssbnms ?

The authro's supposition that an American counter attack on North Korean would require an ICBM and not simply a sub based launch from the pacific so as to antagonize Russia seems like a end of the spectrum poor choice for the US president who by the author's own admission has a menu of retaliator options available to him. While it may make for a impactful story telling mechanism how many sub-optimal choices does the author really need to string together in order to make the book work, as if real nuclear launches aren't bad enough.

they'll hypothesise endlessly about a NK situation but will never ask if a subverted democracy that has installed nominal leadership serving interests besides those of the voters might pursue an escalatory war path on an unrelated note, the USA is currently occupying a third of Syria, selling arms to saudi, and the list goes on for quite a while.
@Reiman3310 ай бұрын
@discordantduck1808 Syria is a failed state so who cares? At the end of the day there is no such thing as escalation unless it is a direct conflict with a parity power. Name a single desert nation with parity to the US? Maybe Iran? There is no nuclear war possible unless america is struck first. Given there is no power that could hope to win in a first strike, there is nothing to worry about. Let me reiterate: unless you are speaking of scifi story level of nonsense like an american president launching a first strike for no reason, there is no enemy to america that can facilitate MAD. Without that, no nuclear war.

Personally I think it would take more than just an absence of evidence of warfare to support the notion of an entire civilization was completely without it. It's a bit like telling me there's no evidence that they spoke, I think it's still a much safer bet that they did. We are almost certainly the least violent, most politically unified human beings in the history of the world, unless the Atlantians show up. If there are conditions in which human beings can live peaceably we are much closer to those conditions than ever we have been. I think we easily beat any of our ancestors in regards to any metrics that I would imagine make peace easier, extreme material abundance, highly unified and stable political units on a scale our ancestors couldn't imagine, relatively clear lines of authority, unprecedented cultural exchange, mutual respect and knowledge, technologies of communication that allow people across the planet to communicate. Yet we still have wars, so I'd say a bunch of dudes who can't just call the police when someone is bothering them probably fought quite a bit more.
@PaigeWayland-r1d10 ай бұрын
Yes, it does take more than an absence of evidence to determine whether this culture had no warfare. I would recommend the lecture series because it was very convincing. I'm 62, and believed that war is the human condition. That is why I was so impressed

There are some criticisms you could lay on the author about technical aspects of her scenario, plenty of people have mentioned it in the comments so I'm not going to reiterate, I would caution them to remember though that the igniter of this whole scenario, The Bolt out of the Blue attack is not in debate, that is a scenario that can happen, I would also remind the critics that the ICBM response might be technically a suboptimal response but with a decision window under 10 minutes, it's not a hard stretch to imagine a sub optimal response being ordered. Change the scenario around as much as you want the primary statement the scenario is trying to make stands, We still exist in an Era of extreme risk from nuclear weapons. I think the wierd hostility against somone for being a journalist as if somehow being that profession justifies dismissing legitimate concerns is the actions of very immature minds.

There's a couple 'just-so' moments that ensure that the situation continuously worsens that do not feel entirely plausible, but the idea that the fate of the entire world can rest on, say, whether or not the President of the United States can get in contact with the President of Russia in the next ten minutes, is utterly terrifying.

@NickFrom122810 ай бұрын
I love Dan's stuff. Supernova in the far east was spectacular. But on this topic I have to say I have significant issues. The authors opening sentence gave me concern, and then throughout her discussion it was only confirmed. In her opening I had hoped that her reference to saber rattling was the lead in to what deterrence is and how nuclear weapons play into that. But no. While she touched the topic tangentially there really was no solid addressing of the topic. This really became evident when talking about the number of bombs created. Anyone who is truly briefed on the topic, as she claims to have be, would fully understand the numbers aspect. The short summary of this is: A nuclear war, whether life ending or not, is still a war. Therefore the US and Soviet union both created enough bombs to destroy the targets they deemed necessary to win the war. She speaks with a lot of dramatic language but lacks a lot of the knowledge one would expect for someone who has thoroughly researched the topic. Case in point. She is in awe about the bomb design where a fission bomb is used to initiate the hydrogen bomb and that this is somehow significant. The kilo/mega ton numbers do all of that without the dramatics around design. The reality is the fission bomb is the spark plug and is unrelated, more or less, to the magnitude of the hydrogen bomb. She was right about man and machines failing. That is the key and scariest part of the nuclear situation. Sadly, she fails to mention that we used to think nuclear wars could be won, but does not mention the absolutely crucial details that Russia STILL DOES. They have extensive bunkers and a plan to do a first strike which has become more enticing to them since they have the hypersonic missiles. They only need a reason. This is why the approach the US and Nato have taken with Ukraine is utter insanity. We keep poking the bear in the eye, at some point they are going to take a swipe in return. Overall she seems to have talked to so many experts but missed so many critical details. Dan asked some really good questions but honestly I'm not impressed with her answers. Granted I'm a little more up to speed than most on these issues but still she missed major points that many people understand. For instance, the 6 minute window to issue the launch order. That is incorrect. That time is not about deciding whether you are willing to launch. That decision is made when you become president and are briefed on the nuclear procedures. Those 6 minutes are about determining if the situation is real etc. Next she talks about launching missiles over Russia to deal with North Korea. This was incredulous giving she had just talked about submarines. We have boomers positioned near North Korea since Eastern Russia is a target and we would not risk starting a war with Russia by shooting over them when we have a sub sitting within a few hundred miles that could do the job without risking a confrontation with Russia or China. Over and over and over she misses the mark. The horrors or nuclear war are real, the threat of war is real, all of that is true, but this authors interpretation is significantly off base in so many key ways. I'm half way through the video and have to quit or this summary will become a book. Overall, I'm not seeing value in this book if it has the same inaccuracies as her interview.

@GlennMarden9 ай бұрын
@@danieltouring Short answer: How little many of us understand about these weapons and the consequences of using them. Also, how little time leaders have to respond in the event of a surprise attack. Long ranting answer: It made me think about a lot of things. I've been interested in military history for years, but I see war as the ultimate horror, and it terrifies me. War steam rolls over combatant and non-combatant alike. Nothing exemplifies this more than nuclear weapons, which cannot help but to kill countless civilians. I always cringe when I hear people spout out that we should just turn such-and-such country into a parking lot or field of glass with our "nukes". I have to imagine everyone has heard someone say such a thing, or maybe have said it themselves... And I know many people might not mean it, but do any of them ever think about the implications? Do they think about a fireball that is well over 100 million degrees F? Do they understand what radiation does to men, women, and children alike? This book went to great lengths to illustrate the indiscriminate horror of nuclear war. It is irreversible, lightning fast and endlessly tragic. Can we defend ourselves against such an attack? Not very likely, especially if the attack is carried out by a nuclear submarine, quite possibly the most devious weapons-system ever created... All we can do is retaliate in kind. Will FEMA save us after an attack? They can't... The "leaders" of our world will have minutes to make decisions. These hasty decisions, made in adrenaline fueled moments of apocalyptic anxiety, will determine everything and nothing all at the same time. 8 billion human beings are being held hostage by a handful of individuals who believe the survival and continuation of their government is the first and foremost priority. Her over dramatic approach and poorly understood issues was too much. I had to stop half way through. It's astounding that she interviewed so many top level people and understood so little.

You say N Korea is the only country not following nuclear guidelines Or inspections? What about Isreal ? And in light of their recent war crimes, I’m MUCH more concerned with them having nukes. PS Dan, N Korea cannot fire their primitive nuke on a missle, let alone hit the US. Most of their nuke tests were duds. Isreal on the other hand, with the stolen plutonium from US and advanced technology probably could and would hit the US. See Samson option.

Absolutely. Funny how this can't be a topic of discussion, because if you do bring it up, you're antisemitic. no matter what. That's the new definition. Dan won't talk about that though, he no longer has "Common Sense".
