It doesn't matter. Rules don't only apply for the top players. All those non top players are still fighting for rank and in turn sponsorship and media coverage. The other player threw - or released - her racket and it struck a ballboy in the shoulder. There should have been a penalty for that and not just a warning. Both of them look like Karens to me but Broady was right. They official went too easy on her. Other players in tennis did the exact same and were DQ'd, but she didn't even lose a point.

What does a code violation do? is there a fine?
@Vendrix866 жыл бұрын
A55tech The first violation results in a warning; the second, a point penalty; the third, a game penalty; and the fourth, forfeiting the match. The fact that Broady bitched about this is incredibly cheap and not confident in her own game. Anyone with eyes can see it was accidental. If the ref decides to apply the violation that's one thing, but Broady decided to be a cunt.

@masteryehudi70316 жыл бұрын
To my eye, Ostapenko released the racket in frustration and oughtn't have done that, but the throw and the contact with the ball boy were clearly accidental. In my judgment (and I guess the ump's) she would have been unlucky to take a DQ in that situation. In any event, the difference in mentality is displayed by what happens after that unfortunate event: 17 year old Ostapenko is contained and composed even when being berated by Broady, while Broady comes across as emotional (she's even in tears), petty and out of control. Fast forward a few years and Ostapenko is #6 while Broady is #130. Amongst other things (talent, work, etc.) their mental games must be on a different level, and you can see that in this video.

Alan Chong Obviously ostapenko knew that he could not hit the ball. Then the idiot threw her racket at the ball, doing a stupid act. It was not by accident. It's similar to what nadal did recently in a game, the ball was too high and he knew he could not get there, so he threw his racket into the ball. But the idiot of ostapenko wanted to do the same and hurt someone, Worst of all, she did not apologize. Shapovalov was disqualified for doing something similar but with a ball that accidentally hit a judge.
@BDUBZ493 жыл бұрын
She clearly did not throw it AT the ballboy. Yes, she threw it intentionally but her head was down and she didn't see him standing there. It hit him accidentally. She waved to him immediately indicating it was an accident.

I love that Broady was in no mood to just let Ostapenko's violence and mendacity go unchecked. The "smart" thing to do is to just keep focusing on only your side of the net, but Ostapenko is a classic tennis brat that thinks she should get away with assaulting a ball boy. I know she didn't mean to hurt him but she did mean to throw her racket and she should have been defaulted immediately. Shame on the chair umpire for his cowardice.

Broady is a typical opportunistic hypocrite. Nothing more. Umpire should be ashamed for not giving her a warning for pathetic attempt to force disqualification of her opponent.
