About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

A little shout out to Young Oak Kim (people tend to leave him out) who was also in the 442nd Regiment as the only Korean American who served along side with the Japanese Americans. The battalion commander offered him a transfer, fearing ethnic conflict between Young Oak and the Japanese-American troops. (At the time, Korea was occupied by the Japanese empire.) Regardless, he insisted on staying, stating that "there [are] no Japanese nor Korean here. We're all Americans and we're fighting for the same cause." He was awarded 19 medals, including the Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars, three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Medal of Military Valor, a Légion d'honneur, a Croix de guerre, and (posthumously) the Korean Taeguk Cordon of the Order of Military Merit. The 442nd are filled with men with amazing stories and sacrifice all the while going through a crucible of hardship and discrimination. But these men, regardless of being Japanese or Korean, fought together as proud Americans who sacrificed more than they should have. They very much earned that moniker "The Purple Heart Battalion".

That's amazing, and I didn't know that! I live in Korea, so I hear a lot about Korean/Japanese tension, so this is quite the encouraging story. Thanks for sharing! (Oh, and my hubby's name is Bae!!)

Farah Fleurima that’s too bad I didn’t know that. Steven Yuen, who plays Daniel is Korean as well. As much as I love him surely we have have talented young Japanese actors as well, who could have played a Japanese American. Though it seems like there is less Japanese immigration to the US now then there was then. That’s only an observation, not sure if that’s actually true.
@Collins1118

Again love Steven and Koreans in general. You’re a lovely people. I just don’t like when they use anyone Asian to play anyone from any Asian country. Some people do not recognize the differences between, Chinese, Japanese and Koreans. Sometimes I myself have been wrong. But there are differences in appearance much less language! Lol. Unless you speak English only I guess.

To make it more badass, here are some of the real-world details: The "machine gun nests" he assaulted are pillboxes, not sandbags. Those are concrete bunkers with tiny open firing slits, just like those you see in Saving Private Ryan's Omaha Beach opening scene, only smaller. That's why Lt. Daniel Inouye has to get closer and expose himself to danger in order to throw his grenade accurately through the slits. The bullet that hit his stomach is a machine gun bullet, it ripped his abdomen muscle and spilling some guts, which he kinda held back. This was before he rushed into the first machine gun position, 40 yards away. During the rush, he was shot 5 times in total, and keep on going, chucking grenades and hip-firing his Thompson when he progressively loses strength to lift it up to his shoulder. The 30 mm rifle grenade that hit his right elbow didn't explode, but the kinetic force pried his lower forearm muscle open, leaving a dangling skin & some tendons attached to his upper arm. (Luckily) it doesn't severe the nerve, so the grenade was clenched tight in his now useless right palm. While the onlooking German defenders who shot the rifle grenade is rushing to detach the rifle grenade launcher and load bullet clips, Lt. Inouye pried the grenade from his mangled right arm and throw it into the slit, and finishing off the German defenders. He keeps on fighting, firing his Thompson SMG with his left hand at enemy positions, as his men rushed to run over them. When he finally collapsed due to blood loss and 5th bullet hit to his left leg, he stumbled rolling down the hill. his horrified men wanted to carry him back for treatment, but he ordered them to return to position, "nobody called off the war!" he said. I think it has to be toned down to general audience to make it more believable. And yes, both the German POW he captured and his horrified men witnessed all of this crazy action.

@mitchjr77 3 жыл бұрын
They didn’t need to find it. The ACTUAL story was CRAZIER than THAT! When Dan went to throw his Grenade, the German with the Rocket Launcher beat him to the punch and blew up his arm from the elbow. When Daniel looked down, he saw his arm still hanging on by it’s skin and a few tendons. He also saw the Grenade STILL clutched in his right hand! All Daniel could think was that the Grenade was about to go off, so he needed to get rid of it. The next thing Daniel remembered was his using his left hand to pry open his right, then tossing the Grenade, taking out a nearby bunker. Daniel then picked up his Machine Gun with his left hand and started charging up the hill as he was shot a few more times AGAIN, where he then finally collapsed off the side of the hill passing out. His men taking cover behind him saw what was happening, and was so inspired and pumped up by what Daniel did, they all came out and started rushing up the hill! In the end, they won and took the hill while sometime later, Daniel woke up in the Hospital to discover his right arm had been removed. And believe it or not, this was maybe pretty on top, when it comes to crazy stories, but this was just an average one when it came to the 442nd. There was a REASON they are the MOST Decorated Military Regiments of all time! 🤯

If we went back to WW2, and had any Japanese-American, like Daniel, got caught by true Imperial japanese, that individual would had suffered the same fate or even worse treatment than your "typical" American. So no need to differentiated ourselves of what type of Americans, we are all in the same team🇺🇸.

Mr Miyagi was a soldier in the 442nd and was awarded the Medal of Honor, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Army Commendation medal and Purple Heart. Someone should tell his (admittedly fictional) story.

The story of the entire 442nd is pretty wild. There was the story of an visiting officer who called for assembly and when he saw a mostly empty room asked where the men were. He was speechless when he was told "This is all that's left." They were meatgrindered repeatedly, I had a granduncle who died in Italy with the 442nd on his 21st birthday.
