Dan, you are worth listening to, my lawn was really spongy last year and when cutting the lawn it was ripping the grass out even though the mower was set on a higher setting than normal. After watching your videos I realised it was all down to the thatch and it had been growing underneath the lovely green surface growth, when I peeled back the grass there was loads of thatch. I followed your videos and cut the lawn short, then raked/scarified, then put some top dressing on with seed and it's much better so far, still got a long way to go, your video's are very educational.

Dan. I experimented two years ago and used fescues and bents on front lawn and 40% dwarf rye with creeping red fescue, chewings fescue, strong creeping red fescue and a small amount of bents on the back. Yes front lawn..very hard work. Weed grasses also showed up in the front which made it look worse than the back. I am gradually converting the front to match the back so mixed ⅓ of grass seed I used on the front with ⅔ of seed from back to overseed a few days ago. Next year I will sow the same as the back. Probably done everything wrongly but we shall see..I will share results when it becomes little established.

Hi Dan. I have just top dressed a really wet boggy lawn. We had the ground levelled last spring and turfed shortly afterwards. The lawn did well for the summer and autumn but suffered really badly from compaction over the winter resulting in bare ground and waterlogging in the shady area of the lawn. This week i have aerated with a core aerater by hand, taking out 25mm holes down to 4" and also hand scarified and removed a lot of thatch. Today i have set up the cement mixer put in 50 ltrs of compost to 25 litres of top soil and pre mixed the seed into the mixture. The ground had settled badly in some areas so there were a lot of low spots. I have levelled it all off, some areas to a depth of 25mm in depth. Any pointers going forward or things which i may have done which might not help the lawn to regenerate. I have used A1 lawn seed. I am keen to establish the ground in this second year and hopefully have a more flat and stable standing for the lawn which i can then start working on properly. Love the videos.

Hello! Please help! After applying sand top dressing (half m3 /100m2) and smoothing it with a leveling rake, I noticed that no matter how I try to level the area, there remain tender, thin and weak horizontally lying blades of grass under the sand. Should I worry about them, or will they come out after a few days? They emerge as a result of a water jet (or water sprayed from half a meter away), but this slightly erodes the effect of leveling because it re-excavates the area filled with sand between the larger clumps of old grass, and can also displace upturned seeds and fertilizer particles. So far, I have applied only half of the planned amount of top dressing, I don't dare to spread more, I would like to wait until the grass grows a little (I cut it into short pieces before aerating the lawn). At the same time, I don't think I can wait too long, because I sowed fast-germinating seeds, and once the new grass comes, it shouldn't be necessary to loosen the soil. What do you advise?

Hi Dan I have a really shady dwarf rye lawn that really suffers through the winter. Any thoughts on something that might be a bit more hardy?

This suffers but this winter used orbit regular and its paid dividends

The KLF said It's Grim Up North, fortunately for us they never saw your work.

Surely the scarifying grooves would have been good enough for the seed bed?

They get closed up more often than not with the mower

Why not use a lawn leveller over a rake for the soil spreading, or at least finish with one, for a better finish?

Nothing wrong with my finish thank you

Can you use just normal topsoil by Westland for the dressing?

Wouldnt myself or i would be, to many weed seeds in these top soils as they freshly dug so not weed seed treated

Cheers Dan. That part at 17 mins (ish) about Fescue & Bent vs Rye was exactly what i've been trying to figure out the last week or so. Re-doing my lawn and couldn't figure out why not to use Fes/Bent considering everything I see online says that's 'premium lawn'. You solved my problem in about ten seconds there, i'll be getting some Dwarf Rye now, thank you!

...and reseeding every year after the rye dies off? Expensive
@jonathanellis98989 ай бұрын
@@paulwebb4192 I don't have the expertise to know whether that's correct Paul. Though I'd assumed Perennial Rye Grass was.... a Perennial. Though obviously some is lost throughout winter of course. Regardless, it's not a huge amount of money once a year and if it saves me hours of dealing with disease correction, i'll pay it. Spending hours and hours of aggro trying to tame the fescue/bent issue, just to save £40 a year on seed, not a great hourly rate you're working at.

Hi daniel,do i have to wait until the ground is dry before scarifying? Or is it ok to do it when its wet?
