As a former Marine, this song always hits me hard. I had many brothers in arms. We were from cities, rural areas, every shade of skin tone. I knew that they had my back and they knew that I had theirs. It is a sobering idea that your life is in someone else's hands. I couldn't finish watching this reaction. The proper respect was not shown to the subject matter. It was like watching a teenager at a Boy Band concert.

Looks to me like she was paying tribute to the incredibly transcendent arrangement she was listening to; which in itself was a homage to the powerfully emotive subject matter. You should give it another watch and ask yourself if the subject matter was appropriately and fittingly respected by the arrangement. She did a great job pointing that out - she’s a singer, you’re a soldier - your respective approaches will differ. She was clearly blown away by the song, which I think is one of the best I’ve heard from Home Free - and better than the original.

Tim can definitely go lower than that. You should listen to “Sold”, by John Michael Montgomery or “Do You Hear What I Hear”. This was written by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits in 1983 and recorded by them in 1985 as a tribute to the fallen soldiers of the war over the Falkland Islands. Another group named Club for Five did an a cappella version, and Home Free asked their permission to use their arrangement for this. Every version is excellent and very haunting and soulful.

That bass note is Tim. He's done it before. The first time I think I heard it was on the Sing - Off performances. (They won season 4) and my jaw hit the floor, along with the judges on that show lol!

I have always loved this song by Dire Straits but think Home Free did an excellent version of this song. Tim's natural breathy bass was awesome & so were all the guys doing 5 part harmonies. These guys are my favorite a cappella group out there.

Remember that there are 3 tenors singing. If you don't recognize the voice as Rob or Austin, it's Adam Rupp. Adam can sing as high as Austin!

I'm so happy you reacted to this one. It's a master class in harmony taking the place of instruments. The original song by Dire Straits had a haunting guitar. In this, the background vocals had to do the same job. And they did perfectly and to me this version is even more haunting because of it. Those final 2 chords always get to me. They sound just like an organ.

Correct! Tim Foust is the best bass of all to me! Plus, it isn't all about the lowest note that a bass singer can hit. It's also who sounds the best while doing it! The most beautiful/pleasant sounding voice! I think Avi Kaplan & Geoff Castellucci are great bass singers too, but Tim has a more beautiful tone that is so warm and resonate! When he sings it feels like being wrapped up in a warm comfy blanket in front of a fireplace on a cold winter night! Nothing more sweet or delicious than that unless you add a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows in it! ♥️

Great reaction! This is a Beautiful song for all veterans. Yes Tim has gone low many times . G1 is common for him. He has blown many speakers on stage before. I know you are focused primarily on the musicality and arrangement...and I like that, but this is one of those songs that you need to go back and hear again without pausing. Pay attention to the lyrics and let the song touch you in the way the musicians intended when they recorded it.

I totally agree. I was reminded throughout this reaction of the saying “can’t see the forest for the trees”. Before trying to put the thought as politely as possible, I checked to see if anyone else had addressed it. You had done so perfectly.

Danielle, I love your reactions and your sharing of your vocal performance knowledge, thanks. But, I agree with Chris C. and DieGooleDie that in this song, the epic vocal talents of Home Free are a distant second to the power of the message conveyed in Mark Knopfler's lyrics. Please accept my comments as constructive criticism when I say that I was expecting part of your "reaction" to include an emotional component. The impact of the early scene where the camera pans across the flags flying above the graves hits me in the heart every time I watch the video. Each one of those flags represents a fallen soldier who was someone's father, husband, brother, son, friend, etc. I normally love upbeat reactions but I believe this song deserves a deeper look. There's definitely a tonal dissonance between Danielle reacting cheerily and happily to a song about the last thoughts of a dying man realizing it was all for nothing, essentially. I've seen other reactors still commend on the music, but be sobered by the message, but she seems to have completely missed the sobriety of the song altogether. Feels a bit like an audience member laughing and cracking jokes in the middle of a serious moment at a funeral service.

I thought that Chance was taking some of the base notes during the vocalization harmonies, letting Tim do things in higher ranges. Also, that last chord at the end sounded like a cathedral pipe organ! AMAZING !

This was such a creative arrangement of a beautiful song. I was really curious what they were going to do, because there's no way you're going to capture Knopfler's incredible guitar, and the Home Free Boys did not disappoint. Wow. Just, wow.

Remember, assigning parts to the HF singers is only a convenience for the listeners. All four singers* can get below C2, which makes them basses, and above C5, which makes them tenors. Foust usually sings the really low notes because he can reach A0. Brown handles the top end because he can reach D6. Other than that, all bets are off. *Adam Rupp's range is unknown because he sings so rarely.

I enjoy hearig your critiques on different song styles but in this one I think you missed a major point. Home free's rendition of this song puts real feeling into it,,, I served 20 years in the Army and truly understand what "Brothers In Arms" really are,,, this rendition puts words to feelings that a lot of veterans can' and won't talk about. I understand that you work with the music and arrangement but I thought that I would let you see a deeper side of the music. again,,, thank you for what you do!

I didn't think anyone could do this song better than Dire Straits. Home Free have just proved me wrong. As a bas singer, I am in total awe of Tim's range and versatility. How he can sing so deep with such a melodious tone is unbelievable. The harmonies in this are just ridiculous! And those last two chords sound like a huge pipe organ.

Hi Danielle. I can't remember if you have done The guys doing Ring of Fire yet. They invited Avi formerly of Pentatonix to join in on that video. The very last note of that video is Tim hitting and fairly well sustaining a G1. If you haven't gotten to that yet, do yourself that favor. There is another personnel difference in that one as well. Adam Rupp's brother Chris (who started the band 20 some odd years ago, (before Tim, Rob and Austin joined), and he recommended Adam Chance as his replacement. By the way, to avoid confusion, he simply goes by Chance to simplify the 2 Adam issue. Chris and his brother Adam are the only 2 original members of the group. All the others were doing other things when they joined the group. Tim was teaching school. Rob was bartending. Austin was a cruise ship entertainer. Chance was in another group, where BTW he was that groups bass. He is of course now the baritone for these guys. Really enjoy watching your vids. looking forward to more. Oh Tim has hit that many times. Ring of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues he’s hit that. He can go lower. On the Sing Off he got lower on the end note, live. His range is amazing. Love this song. It’s a tremendous cover. Loved the echoes, loved the black and white film. Tim and Chance looked ghost like in the windows. Such beautiful harmonies. Good reaction Danielle.

Tim has gone as low as a G1, and to hear it in concert is just a rib-rattler. It's part of his 5 octave range. I don't think that the echo effect they sang is digital as each echo was slightly different, and not just in volume. This song is a sad commentary on war.

Yeah, most of the lower notes in this vídeo, all G#1's, all in chest by Tim... "Ring of Fire" he hits a G1 in growl at the end... They have "Honey im good" he hits a D1 in growl... In "Down to the honkytonk" he goes down to a Eb1 in chest fry, and growl at the end... And a good one too, "Folsom prison Blues" he goes to a massive E1 in chest fry, sounds so full... There is a lot of songs that Tim show off his range, low and high... Great reaction and analysis!
