Actually the 15 dollar price point was the same price HBO was on Prime (and i think Hulu) so in essence you get a bigger library for the same price. the UI is a little basic. Some classic adult swim, studio ghibli, TCM, DC, so yeah def worth it if you like these things.

I think so long as they keep the subscriptions bundled together for one price it's not a problem. But I don't know that I would pay a higher price for "HBO Max" over regular "HBO" at this point. If come a year from now, I'm told that it's no longer free with my linear subscription and instead I have an up charge of $10 if I want the "extended library" I don't know that I would definitely say yes.

To me I already determined it is worth it to me personally. Between movies HBO gets, their active series, backlog content like The Newsroom, the wire, supranos, six feet under and with the cartoon network stuff along with the hanna-barbara content it's just a lot of content I already like that I don't have access to on home media. What surprised me was the TCM section so many classic movies and not just from 70's or before, disappointing they don't have the most recent remaster of Lawrence of Arabia in it though.

I’m so excited you’re getting into anime, I got into it like a few months ago and I’m literally obsessed. My favorite studio Gibley is princess Mononoke, with Howells moving castle at second

Thanks so much for this review, Dan. You helped me a lot in making my decision-I think I’m going to try out Criterion Channel for now instead. I only have a Roku and a fire stick, and as much as I love Studio Ghibli and some of the British content you mentioned, it’s not enough to convince me to get yet another streaming box. I would definitely be interested in a series of Studio Ghibli reviews!

Only real reason to subscribe to HBO Max is for the Ghibli films but anyone with a VPN already watched them on Netflix 6 months ago.

Thank you so much for covering everything so thoroughly! It means a lot that you’d actually take your time to compare crunchyroll vs hbo’s selection even though anime is a medium you don’t personally watch. It really helps me personally and I’m sure a lot of others feel the same way

The Criterion Channel is my favorite streaming service available (Though its failed predecessor Filmstruck will always occupy the biggest space in my heart), so thanks for giving it a shoutout! I love seeing the selection of classics on HBO Max, but it pales to what the CC offers. HBO appeals to me mainly as an animation fan but I don’t know if I can justify based on that solely. But in that spirit I’m always so excited to see a person about to take a dive into the Ghibli’s for the first time! I’m most anxious to see your takes on Mononoke and Kiki. You couldn’t have two films more different but I treasure them so. Best of luck on that journey. :)

As a huge anime fan, I would only recommend Konosuba, and Princess Mononoke. There are some others definitely worth mentioning, but those are the only 2 i would recommend to non anime fans. Btw, this was a great breakdown Dan! Ive honestly gone through alot of articles around HBO max, and i feel like u did a better breakdown than all of them combined

Oooo TMC & Looney Tunes! I kind of dig those...hmm, maybe when I start working again I might try the trial, but fine right now with Netflix, Prime Video & the Disney/hulu/ESPN package (as I swap "on & off" HBO via Prime when there is a HBO series running that I covet...Good Review Danimal! (Yes Bay's "Pearl Harbor" is def NOT a classic, I'd even say Armageddon is more of a "classic 90s cheese" than the awful Pearl Harbor).

They finally have made a streaming service for movies lovers. Up until now it s all been about tv and original content. TCM and Criterion are both services just for movies but are very specific. This has a massive catalog of films from every era, American and international. This is absolutely the worth the price for me.

Thanks for the great overview Dan. There is one HBO Original Movie that I have always loved, called "Something The Lord Made." It contains great performances from Alan Rickman, Mos Def and Mary Stuart Masterson, among others. I looked for it as you were scrolling around the content but didn't see it near Billy Crystal's "61*" and other HBO original movies. That being said, I also didn't see The Sopranos, The Wire, Rome, Deadwood, Entourage and lots of other stuff that I would expect to be there when I did see Game of Thrones, Watchmen, Westworld and Sex And The City. Are all of their original series on HBO Max? Arli$$, Dream On, and some of those other early series were groundbreaking. I own "Something The Lord Made" on DVD so whether it's there is inconsequential to me personally, but if it is, I wondered if you would be interested in doing a re-watch and review. It's worth your time and it might be something else you can recommend to people who are getting this streaming service. Thanks for the great content and look forward to your future programming.

This was a great review, and I really appreciate it, Dan. Also, I really hope you do a series of reviews on the Studio Ghibli movies. You're in for a treat. If I could make a suggestion, I think it might be interesting to watch them in the order they were made. Just to get the idea of where they started and ended up at. It's not necessary though, but I'm curious to see if maybe you notice any notable changes along the way.
