I assumed (since these are annoyingly common in normally toxic relationships) that it was a 'love test' and through some twisted logic the girl had decided that if he could go 24 hours without NEEDING to talk to her, that he didn't truly love her and she in some way deserves to or feels like she must die. It's a made up scenario, but I can understand/relate to how warped and irrational your logic and reasoning can become in a mental health crisis.
