Being Irish, I saw this movie for the first time 2 years ago when i had a day off, so myself and my 7 year old son sat and watched it and i have to say i was very impressed, great story, acting, not too sentimental and i can only imagine the impression the banshee would have on kids watching it :) Something similar to the effect The vampire child tapping on the window in Salems Lot had on me :)

The banshee used to scare me as a kid (I’m Irish as well) and in the middle of the night my mom would do an impression of her to scare us and she is super good at it EDIT: I meant impression of the banshee Lmaoo

I saw the movie upon its first release in 1959 and I had no trouble understanding the voices! This sounds exactly like the three times I've seen and heard it. I'm American and grew up in the San Fernando Valley, where I saw it and where it was filmed.

TO WILDCHATS: Acutally the voices in this video are DUBBED. The DVD has the original 1959 soundtrack and voices. The film originally premiered (and was a BIG HIT of course) in Dublin, Ireland. The film was also issued in America in 1959 but it was reissued in 1961 with the "dubbed" voices because American audiences complained about the thick Irish brogues from the actors in the 1959 soundtrack.

Ok, so I bought the DVD for my parents but I was very disappointed to find that they've redubbed the voices of Darby and Brian for most of the movie. It ruins their personalities and makes it boring. So you're probably better off just downloading the original...

The producers thought that Albert Sharpe's accent was too gruff and hard for American ears to understand. They did the same thing to alot of early Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. filmmakers have largely gotten away from that practice today though, as they generally strive to make movies more authentic.

true foolypa, but I thought I'd give an example of something which is the polar opposite of romanticised blarney like Darby O' Gill! "Adam & Paul" is the best Irish film of the past ten years though, hilarious and tragic, totally unflinching portrait of the lives of Dublin junkies. And there are people like Adam and Paul all over the country too, I know plenty of them myself..

Jimmy O Dea was great as the leprechaun king. Old Darby wasn`t bad either...and Sean Connery looked the part..and his Scottish accent. Great colour.
